Questions on Currency Of Galicia #galicia

Alan Weiser <alanboy@...>

I have recently received some Kolomyja documents listing wages in
zlotys and others of dues paid to Kehilla also in zlotys.

I have the following questions if you can answer them or direct me to
a web site that can provide answers I will appreciate it:

1. What would be the US dollar equivalent of a 1936 Polish zloty; a
1939 Polish zloty?

2. What would be a time line of currencies used in
Kolomyja/Galicia say >from 18th century through present day; from
Austrian rule through Polish rule to under Ukrainian rule? I also
would like to obtain US dollar equivalents to those currencies
identified.

It is understood that bartering was a form of economic exchange, but
at some point along came coinage and eventually bills for general use
in the marketplace. I also understand that Jews were initially
involved with coinage design and production while serving as arendars
(leaseholders) under Polish magnates (wealthy nobles).

Thank you.

Re: Birth records in Texas & Missouri #general

joe <joe@...>

Hello Mimi,
For Missouri you might try the indexes at...

http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/default.asp

I don't know of one for Texas, but if you know the county, you might
check the Family History Library Catalog to see what
they have on microfilm...

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Good luck with your search.

Re: Holocaust victims accounts - Swiss banks agree to open their records #hungary

orinne <dianedaily@...>

Along this line, I have a question.

In my family search I have found a branch whose
only survivor lived in Kishinev.

He said that the Russians took valuables >from his
father's jewelry store, but when the Nazi's came through,
and killed his family, they stole all of
the family assets >from the jewelry store.

I can't find the name BELOGORODSKY (Wolf Davidowitz)
in any of the databases regarding victims claims.

Can anybody help me out?

Many thanks,

Swiss banks have agreed to release records of thousands of World War

"The Twentieth Train" #general

Stephen Esrati <stevsta@...>

Grove Press has published "The Twentieth Train: The True
Story of the Ambush of the Death Train to Auschwitz."

The book concerns a train >from Mechelen, Belgium, but
the people aboard were >from every corner of Europe.

Of interest to Jewish Genners is an appendix, listing
the deportees. There are more than 1,500 of them with
birthdays and place of birth. In some instances,
it also gives the occupations.

The accuracy of the occupations depends on
whether you trust the Germans. For example, one "schoolgirl"
listed (in 1943) must have gone to a school for middle-aged
people because her birth was in 1903.

Search of relative’s names - Central Zionist Archives

Shalom,
I am researching my father’s family; Sztejnklaper,
Sztajnklaper or Steinklaper.

I learned >from Jewish Gen Discussion Group that
Central Zionist Archives have in their archives a list
of people that arrived to Israel after 1928?
end on?

I have written an e-mail to Central Zionist Archives
over 2 months ago and have not received any response >from them.
Is it protocol that Central Zionist Archives doesn’t
provide any information to people that are requesting for
information on line or do you have to visit the Central
Zionist Archives in person and search thru the files?

I would like to hear >from someone that had any feedback >from CZA.
I am planning to visit Israel in 2005 for reunion of
friends next July if my health will allow me.

Sincerely
Adam

Zionist archives #general

Dorothy Kohanski <dkohanski@...>

recently sent the Zionist Archives a set of four books of the proceedings
of the American Jewish Conference (1944-1948), a committee of Jewish leaders
from all over the US and some >from Canada, who met regarding presentations
to the UN concerning the future of the surviving Jews. My late husband,
Dr. Alexander Kohanski, was the organizer of the Conference and editor of
three of these books. They list all the attendees and give virtually
verbatim discussions by these leaders.
In addition to its historical importance, some members attending the
current Genealogy conference may find a relative or two and see what they
had to say.

If anyone does look at these books, I'd be interested in hearing >from you.
Incidentally, when I looked through the list of attendees I found a number
of relatives - who did not know they were family!

Lodz Ghetto Database #general

martin j kronman <mkronman@...>

I discovered today the new Lodz Ghetto data base and found some
interesting results. Three members of the Kronman family all
living at the same ghetto ghetto address also had the same
address in Lodz, Adolf Hitler Strasse. This is clearly not
the original name but the name given to the street by the
Germans. However, there does not seem to be any such street as
Adolph Hitler Strasse in the Lodz street name index.
Both the original and German names are given for large number
of streets, but there is no mention of the German
name. Does any one know what the original name was?
I would be grateful for this information.

Stefi ROTH- Bratislava Deportation Records? #general

MiriFM@...

I have been searching for the fate of my Great-Aunt Stefania
TAUSSIGOVA ROTH, born in Prague January 7, 1894.
(One document states January 6, but the Prague Archive
document states Jan. 7). She was the daughter of Moses/Moritz/Taussig
and Theresa (Terezie),born Neustadlova.

Stefi married Arnold ROTH, born in Bystricany,
Slovakia (June 6, 1884-194?).

I received >from the Jewish Community of Bratislava Stefi's
address in 1940: Zidovska 200, Bratislava. This may have been
her last place of residence before deportation.
She worked as a housekeeper and taking care of children
to survive. Arnold was a salesman.

I would like to learn the date of deportation, assembling place,
and name of the concentration camp where Stefi and Arnold perished.

Stefi is not listed in the Terezin Memorial Book.
Yad Vashem has an incomplete Page of Testimony that I
would like to update.

I found the following address on the Internet
(without zipcode), mailed a letter of inquiry on May 3, 2002,
and never received a reply. I had someone phone,
but there was no answer.

Zidovska nabozenska obec Bratislava
Holocaust Documentation Center
Palisady 18

Slovak Republic

I have also not received a reply >from Jewish Museum in Prague.

I would appreciate any suggestions where to search further.

Thanks!
