Is there record of gravestones in Cape Town. I am trying to find out the
Hebrew name of my great grand mother, Sophy Hermann, who died in Cape Town
on June 7th 1940 and who would have been buried at whatever cemetary was
operational at that time.

INTRO - Town of Gleiwitz #germany

Raffael & Rivka Zernik <rrz123@...>

Hello,
I have just joined the group and am new to the field of genealogy research
in general, as well as German Jewish genealogy research.
I live in Haifa, Israel and am fluent in Hebrew, English and German.
I have a fair idea about the use of the computer and reasonable experience
surfing the web.

I have documentation regarding the names, dates of birth and death of my
grandparents and cicumstantial evidence about the names and estimated life
span of my great grandparents.

My primary resaearch goal is to find out more about the Jewish community of
Gleiwitz during the early 19th century and especially about the ZERNIK
family in Gleiwitz.

Here are some specific names:

ZERNIK - David and Julie ZERNIK, who lived in Gleiwitz b.circa 1810, d.
circa 1880. Also L. ZERNIK, full name unknown, who was their contemporary.

GLEIWITZ - Does the old Jewish cemetery still exist?

Robert Raffael Zernik, rrz123@012.net.il , Haifa, Israel

MOD NOTE: Welcome to GerSig. Your INTRO letter >from us tells you about several
tools for finding out about towns and cities. I suggest you use them Re: Gleiwitz.

New Yizkor project: "The Holocaust in Belarus" #belarus

Irene Newhouse <einew@...>

Long-term members may recall that late last year, I asked for volunteers to
help translate >from Russian Dr. Leonid Smilovitsky's "The Holocaust in
Belarus". Although there was some response, the rate of progress has been
slow, so the next step has been taken: all of you with an interest in
Belarus who wish to be able to read the book in its entirety in English now
have the opportunity to make (US) tax-deductible donations towards its
translation by professional translators. A total of $2000 should do the
job.

The project is described at

& is linked >from
http://www2.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/YizkorTrans.html and

The table of contents, bibliography and a few other sections of the book are
already on the Yizkor Project website.

Genners -

Does anyone know anything about Alien Registration Cards and how to obtain
them? After a lot of research and failures trying to obtain my great-
grandfather's naturalization papers, I am beginning to wonder if he was
never naturalized. I thought maybe it was a law that you had to be
naturalized, but others have told me about ancestors who merely kept
filing these alien registration cards and stayed in the USA for 50, 60,
70 years.

My great-grandfather immigrated >from Russia in the late 1880s, but married
a woman who was a U.S. citizen - - would that provide him with legal
shelter? His 1900 and 1910 census listing have him as alien. His 1920
census listing does say "Pa" for papers filed - - but I have not found
them.

If anyone know how to track down these old Alien Registration Cards, let
me know. Thanks!

Peter Haas-searching for Feigenbaum Family #general

Leslie Felner <l.felner@...>

Dear Genners:

I am searching for a Peter Haas who posted a success story regarding his
search on his wife's maternal GGF Morris Feigenbaum in 1996. His email
address at the time was Rayray55@aol.com and phaas@intr.net both of which
are no longer valid. I did a google search on Peter Haas and apparently
Peter Haas is as common as Abe Cohen :) .
My paternal family is directly related to Morris Feigenbaum who settled in
Poughkeepsie. My father would be very interested in contacting all of his
cousins. Some of these Feigenbaums came to my wedding in 1986.

I would like to continue this success story and present my parents with
information when they come >from Florida to New Jersey for Rosh Hashonah.
Thank you so much >from a lurker who has learned tons of stuff >from this
newsgroup.
You can contact me directly.
