Re: who were Simon's parents/Pittsburgh?Worone, Russia #general

Robert Zavos <rzavos@...>

Marilyn,

If Simon died in Pittsburgh the parents names would likely be on the death
certificate provided the Informant (person who supplies the d.c.
information) was a close friend or realtive. The fathers name would also
likely be on the tombstone. Once you find the death date you can also look
for an obituary (usually within the following 1 to 5 days) in the
Pittsburgh newspapers or the Pittsburgh Jewish Criterion. If you find the
synagogue name you might write to the them to see if they have any records.

Information on finding these is on the Pittsburgh IAJGS Website:

I have the peitition for naturlaization for Simon ROSENTHAL and know where
her was born and when. He came to America without his parents. How can I
determine his parents names? Would this information have been requested by
any government authorities when he came to this country in 1910? Thanks.

Have you gotten Simon's death certificate-which probably has his parents'
names? Or better yet, a marriage record where he says what his parents'
names were? Of course the records of his brothers and/or sisters will also
have the information-I once held a 'vote' >from my gr grandfather's brothers
and sisters death certificates on what their parents' names were.

How about an obituary? A synagogue record? A nursing/old folks' home? A
history of the Jewish community where he lived? A history of the city where
he lived? The records of the town in Europe where he lived?

Have you talked to any cousins that you can find-anywhere? Have you checked
the passenger list to see if he says he left them behind? Have you checked
emigration records, if they exist for Europe?

Of course, his tombstone probably has his father's name, if there is a
Hebrew inscription.

And on and on.

I was not able to attend to the conference due to my health, and in the only

I agree with Sylvia Nusinov's request for the names to match the
photos included at http://www.isragen.org.il/NROS/INF/2004conf.html

I have never been able to attend any of the conferences and probably never
will unless it were to be held in the Scarborough area of Maine. As Sylvia
has already said, it would be so satisfying to put a face to the names of
the people who have helped us over these many years at JewishGen.

Thanks to all of you.

Re: Musha and Masha #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Kreina Musha, sometimes listed as Musha Kreina, was always explained
to me as "Crown of Moshe."
Dear Schelly,

That explanation seems highly implausible! No such concept exists
in Jewish tradition, and besides, Musha is one version of a common
female name.

According to the talmudic rabbis who composed Mishnah Tractate Avot
(usually known as the "Ethics of the Fathers"):

"There are three crowns: the crown of Torah, and the crown of
priesthood, and the crown of kingship." (Keter Torah, ve-keter
kehunah,ve- keter malkhut - Avot 4:13)

But there's no such thing as a "Crown of Moses." (Even the Crown of
Torah is never referred to as the Crown of Moses.) So this can only
be folk-etymology, as it is inconsistent with talmudic sources.
