Brzesko, Krakow, Auschwitz: A Book #general

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Yesterday, Sept 20th, 2004 I attended the annual ceremony commemorating the 62nd
year of the deportation and liquidation of the Brzesko Jewish community. Most were
killed in Belzec. I met there Mrs. Ester FRIEDMAN nee SPAGATNER who was born in
Krakow. Her maternal grandparents were Pesach and Ester ZEISLER >from Brzesko(they
moved later to a nearby village called Dabrowa(pronounced Dombrowa). Ester
published a few years ago her memoirs which she wrote in Polish immediately after
WW2.The book was published in Poland and is titled "Daleka Droga Do Domu"(you can
find through Google). It was also published in Hebrew. It contains many details
about Brzesko,Krakow,schools,Plaszow,Auschwitz and Birkenau.
She has a number tattooed on her arm: A 26615. My late mother, Sara KOENIGSBUCH,
had the number A 26368. They were probably on the same transport but did not know
each other because of an age gap of 10 years.

Re: Pocket Watch in "Tula Silver" #general

Robert Fraser <robertandginafraser@...>

Many thanks to those who responded, on - and off- list, to my question.

If I'd had the sense to type "tula silver" rather than just "tula" into the search
engine, I would have found what I needed to know. Moral - always do exhaustive
research before posting a query!

I do have a follow-up question - if tula silver is an alloy of silver, lead,
copper and sulphur, as I now know it to be, can I assume that it would have been
cheaper than silver? My grandfather scraped a living as a coffeehouse waiter and
would not have been able to afford a silver watch.

I have always been told that the watch cover was made of "Tula
silver". I have discovered that tula is a place in Russia, but
does the name have any particular significance or otherwise?<snip>

Location of "Vilanova" or Viljanova" #general

Ted Gostin

Roy Ogus asked about a place named "Vilanova" or Viljanova" which was located
"near Vilna." He indicated that he had also seen a reference to a place called
the "forest of Vilanova."

There are many places where Jews lived not listed in WOWW (unfortunately). A
thorough search of detailed maps is often useful for identifying such locations.
The name "Viljanova" and the reference to being near Vilna suggests that it might
have been along the Vilija or Wilia River, which also runs through Vilna.

I believe that the place in question is a town listed as Wilia Nowa on late
19th/early 20th century German maps of eastern Europe. It was located
approximately 14 kilometers northeast of Vilna on the Wilia River, and was, in
fact, surrounded by a small forested area (not named on the maps). The town is
located between Vilna and Nemencine (Niemenczyn), and its approximate coordinates
are 54º48'/25º25'.

There may be other places that also seem to match, but this one certainly seems to
qualify.

Recording Devices for Genealogy Trip #general

Dottie Miller

My last trip I took a digital still camera with good resolution, a digital
camcorder with several blank tapes and a small tape recorder. I took the battery
rechargers for both cameras, each with its own foreign electric current adapter. I
made a point of finding cybercafes for downloading to CDs( and blank CDs) in case
I ran out of space on my digital camera storage media. The most useful device was
the camcorder with the digital camera a very close second. The tape recorder was a
waste. The camcorder gives one the advantage of using both visual and audio to
capture foreign speech that may require both senses for interpretation later. The
digital camera was great for recording documents on microfilm machines without an
attached printer.

Re: Roots Ukraine - Rabbis #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Dear Mark,
After trying for quite along time to find someone living in Dnepropetrovsk
willing to do research in those archives, I got the same idea as you. I wrote to
a "chief rabbi" of Dnepropetrovsk, in care of his stateside group, Tzivos Hashem
in Brooklyn. My great-grandfather was a well-respected rabbi there, I've been
told, so I asked if the rabbi might know anything about him, or be able to assist
me in any way. (I didn't ask him to go to the archives for me <g>)

It's been nearly a year, and I haven't received any response at all.

Perhaps others will have better luck.
