According to this "renaming" , my father-in-law called Boris (because he was

Many of the other Jews are indeed called "Israel".
As to the women, Sarah became "popular".

Alan Glick asks for sources of info on a disbanded burial society.

If you haven't already looked there, you definitely need to look in the
records of YIVO, which has the records of many New York Jewish societies,
and the closely related Center for Jewish History / American Jewish
Historical Society, which has the incorporation records for many such
societies.

Look at ajhs.org , cjh.org , and jgsny.org .

Good luck!

I'm looking for information on Congregation Meselis Israel Anshei
Bielsk/Bylsk. My GGF was buried on the group's site at Mt. Zion Cemetery in
1934. The cemetery has no contact information for the disbanded group. The
last burial by the group was in 1964. Any ideas on how I might go about
locating any information on this group?
Thanks.

Seeking descendants of BLACKMAN family shown in ViewMate photos #general

Martin Fischer

I am seeking to contact descendants of the BLACKMAN family shown in photos
VM5150 and VM5151 posted on ViewMate site at:

http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/index.asp

One photo shows Blackman family of young father and mother with three young
sons photographed in 1917 in Chicago. The other, photographed in June 1919,
identifies the three Blackman brothers as Marcus, age 9; Philip, age 7;
Harold, age 5.

The boys' mother is believed to be named Tillie Blackman, daughter of
Gershon HARRIS, but we lack documentation and have been unable to contact
any of their descendants.

Re: Russian translation: mother's name #general

Dr.Josef ASH

Eliana, Shalom. I permit myself to send the reply to the Group as it may be
of common interest
As a Rabbi said: "You are right, and you are right either..."
The written in the Page of Testemony name is Mariya.
*But*:
in the Dictionary of the Russian Proper Names I read:
Mariya...
derivatives: ... Manya...
and at the end of this article is written the source of the Russian name:
[hebrew name Miriam. Look Mariam.]
She was known as Manya in the family, in her Russian passport she was named
Mariya, but on her tombplate she is, sure, Miriam Freilikher!

Doesn't it explain everything?
Have a Happy Hanukka,
Dr. Josef Ash

I found the Page of Testimony of my grandmother's sister. Its
translation into English gives her mother's name as Maria, but
our family always said that it was Mania or Dvoira. I would like
to ask:
-1st: for those who can read Russian, to see VM 5163, address:
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5163
in order to determine what name did the submitter write in the
original Page of Testimony -- was it Maria or Mania?
-2nd: in the case of the above answer be Maria, would a jewish
woman, who lived approximately >from 1850 to 1910 in Ukraine
(Ekaterinoslav Gubernia), be named Maria?

Responses should be sent me privately: aizim@uol.com.br
