ASAY - looking for any genealogy #general

drsterling@...

Hello,

My birth last name was: "ASAY". It is rare and no one knows where we came
from.

I want to find that I have some Jewish roots. I am drawn to the faith, and
respect everything about it and the Jewish people. But I was just raised
WASP.

My great-grandfather was married to a lady named "Rachel Shinn" in New
Jersey in 1807. Could I have some Jewish blood?

Does anyone know anything about the last name ASAY?

Thank you very much,
Rebecca Sterling,
Nashville, TN

ViewMate Translation Thank You #general

I believe I have thanked everyone, but just in case I left anyone out, I
thought I would send my thank you to the group. (see below)

To All Who Assisted,

I would like to thank all of you for assisting in translating an inscription
in a prayer book (siddur) that I discovered in my home.

Well, it appears that this may be written in Yiddish, yet w/ Hebrew and
English words. For example, the word 'street' is an English word using the
Hebrew alphabet.

I can't tell you how many versions of a translation that I received. So, it
appears that the writing style of the author has made translating this a bit
difficult, darn it.

For the moment, I think a version of the translation "Presented by Mr. and
Mrs. Katz >from 113 Broome Street "seems the most likely choice.

I do know that my great grandmother's maiden name was KATZ, although I don't
know that any of them made it to the U.S. My father did live on the Lower
East Side of NY and Broome St. would be pretty close to his neighborhood.

I have a sneaky feeling that I will never actually figure out who these
people are, although I did try a cursory search of the U.S. Census hoping to
see who would have lived at 113 Broome St. over the years. I thought it a
pretty good idea, but unfortunately nothing rang a bell.

Again, thank you all for trying to help me figure this out. It was truly
appreciated.

REINHOLD/British Intelligence/Belgium #general

In the on-going search for my brother, Yechiel (Heine) REINHOLD, I came
across some information that introduces another piece of the puzzle about what
happened to him.
Apparently, in 1947, there was an attempt by an unknown group to kidnap
him off the streets of Brussels (or Antwerp). Shots may have been fired.
Fortunately, the police intervened and the kidnapping failed. When investigators
went to visit my brother in the hospital, he was no longer there and all
hospital files about this incident disappeared. I heard he was whisked away >from the
hospital overnight by British intelligence. That's all I know.
The actual kidnapping attempt was written up in a Belgium newspaper
that year (1947). But I do not know which Belgium paper covered it. I wonder if
anyone in Belgium can check the newspaper archives to locate this story? I
assume the article will be either in French or Flemish. (I do not believe there
is such a database of archived Belgium newspaper in the U.S. )
Thanks so much.

Adelle <adNOstavis@...>

Dear Craig,

Please go to www.bethisraelmv.org.

I am on the board of directors at Congregation Beth Israel in Andover, MA.
Congregation Beth Israel is the successor to Anshei Sefard and has the
Yarzheit plaques. And I think Sons of Israel and Anshei Sefard merged at one
point. Somehow, they became part of Congregation Tifereth Israel. Last July,
Tifereth Israel and Beth El of Lowell merged to form Congregation Beth
Israel. I do know we have plaques with all those synagogue's names.

Get the phone number >from the website and call the office manager. I won't
publish phone numbers because of trolls, but I will call and let her know to
expect your call. She should be able to find someone who can get the info
off a plaque. She might also be able to track down who would know whether
any pictures remain.

Does anyone have information on the dates both Cong. Sons Of Israel and Anshei

yahrzeit plaques that were likely in both synagogues?

Lawrence, MA Temples #general

Linda Gilmore <lggrn@...>

I have a friend who grew up in Lawrence, MA. I don't know if this
information will be of any help but Anshei Sefard became Conservative and
then merged with a conservative community in Andover, MA and became Tifereth
Israel in Andover. Recently they merged with a congregation >from Lowell, MA
and are now know as Beth Israel.

The Sons of Israel building remains on Park St. but the community literally
"died" out with the aging of its last few members.

It is possible that some information (including plaques for Sons of Israel)
may be located at a museum in Lawrence (Heritage Place) and that any plaques
from Anshei Sefard moved with their merger and are now in Andover.
I think the phone number for the museum is 978-682-7416 but could not verify
as no one answered the phone. Beth Israel's number is 978-474-0540.

Please contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Dear Bernie,
Thought you might be interested to know that my grandfather's
First cousin Jacob Becker founded Congregation Beth Jacob in
Miami Beach which now houses the Jewish Museum of Florida. It
Was the first synagogue in Miami Beach and was found circa 1926.

If you go to the museum you will see the doors and windows
Donated by the family. Also, it was called the "gangster shul"
Because Meyer Lansky and his cronies attended and there is even
A stained glass window dedicated by him.
