or "44AB" or "44Au" Street. Can anyone tell what the address and likely

Jewish burials in Japan (Tokyo) #general

Mark Schwartz <markschwartz3@...>

I have searched the archives without success. My great-uncle, Robert Lewis,
who was born Robert Lefkovich (and later changed his name), passed away in
1969 (either October of November) in Tokyo, Japan.

My Uncle Bob, who I knew, was a very capable electrical engineer, who
invented a number of devices....including some used by the Allies in WWII.
He was employed by Radio Shack (Tandy Corporation) and eventually moved to
Japan. He married there and his wife, my Aunt Ruth, converted to Judaism,
and survived him. Her last address was listed as "Taiko, Minato Ku,
Akasaka, Tokyo." We lost contact with her many years ago.

I am looking for leads on death, and marriage records in the Jewish
community of Tokyo and Japan. I would love to find out where he was buried
and the fate of my aunt.

All help is appreciated. Thank You.

Rosien Polen (?) Russia / Poland Town #general

Craig & Lisa Hopp <fivehopps@...>

Hello list,

I have a geography research question. I have just received >from the NYC
Municipal Archives copies of four marriage certificates for four brothers,
one of whom is my gr-grandfather. All married between 1901 - 1912, and
three of the four listed birthplace as simply "Russia". The fourth brother,
who married in 1911, listed his birthplace as "Rosien Polen". Given the
language barrier and the fact that someone else wrote the information, I
realize the improbability of any accuracy with regard to spelling. I also
have copies of their applications for social security number (>from the
1930's), and birthplaces are listed as Russia / Poland. I tried searching
Mapquest and Shtetlseeker to find something similar, but I have no way to
make any educated guess as to what may or may not be the way to determine
which town is the closest approximation to "Rosien Polen". My
gr-grandfather and his brothers used the surname Marnowitz and its variant
spellings, i.e. Marinowitz, Maronowitz, etc... Any advice, suggestions,
speculation, hunches are greatly appreciated.

It isn't! It is in the northern area of Russia, on Baltic. I have read
enough about Gulgas to have known better.
No, Arkhangelsk isn't on the Baltic sea,
but on White sea, an inlet sea of the Barentz sea.

Dear Roy

I'm afraid I can't help you with your questions, as I have no ancestors in
the UK, but as I was born in Winnipeg (hub of the universe), your message
interested me. Do you know what your great-grandmother's maiden name was?
And where she was from?

Thanks,

Roberta Sheps,

LERNER family in Detroit, ca. 1900 < Bucharest #romania

Marc L. Greenberg <marek4@...>

Hello, all,
I am new to the list and researching the LERNER
family, which settled in waves around 1900 in Detroit,
coming >from Bucharest. I wonder whether anyone might
recognize members of this family. To help make a
possible connection, I have posted two artifacts on
the Viewmate site
(http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp):
VM5498 (studio portrait of Lerner Family, ca. 1900,
Detroit)
VM5495 (postcard of Fany, Galati, ca. 1915)
The photo of the Lerner family is Abram LERNER (my
great-grandmother Selina's brother) with his wife,
Sara FREUDBERG LERNER, and two children. I am aware of
several other children of this couple, but only names.
I would like to find descendants of Abram and Sara
LERNER -- have photos and some narrative to share.
Also, Chaim LERNER was the father of Abram and Sara,
and had a second family after his two first children
were grown; he, too, settled in Detroit. Would like to
know more about any of these LERNERs.
The photo of Fany is >from Galati, ca. 1915 and is a
cousin of Abram and Selina LERNER. A name associated
with Fany on the verso of this postcard is WAISENBERG,
though it is unclear whether this is her name, a
husband's, or even her landlord's. If anyone
recognizes the name or face, I would be grateful for
further information.
Thank you,
Marc L. Greenberg

Charlie Roberts <charlie.roberts@...>

Regarding Celia's note on Breuges, this word was commonly used at home when
we grew up. My mother's family originated >from Kolomea (previously in
Poland) and then went to Vienna where she met my father before fleeing in
1938 to England. She always used this word - we understood it to mean

It certainly was a popular word amongst our customers irrespective of where
