Re: Litvaks & Grodno #belarus

Marlene Bishow <mlbishow@...>

On the subject of Litvaks and Galitzieners:

In my family the story is told that when my mother informed her parents
(father born in Novyy Swerzhen') that she was marrying my father (1943), he
mother (American born) was dismayed at a Litvak female marrying a
Galitziener. It was considered marrying down in class - intelligence, etc.
In a short time, my father became my grandmother's favorite son-in-law. She
passed away in twenty-five years ago, but my parents will be married 60
years next October.

Another comment - My parents are both American born and educated. In the
past ten years they have begun to speak Yiddish to eachother once in a
while. I asked them how come they hardly ever did that when I was a kid and
they responded that they did not understand each other's dialects of Yiddish
well enough to conduct a conversation.

So, is this differentiation not only a geographic distinction, but a social
and class distinction? I have often wondered.

Seeking BLANCHE STERN, nee DAVIS COHEN. #general

Barbara Mannlein <bsmannlein@...>

Searching for descendants of my husband's great grandparents.

1. Ida PINKOFSKY (Pincous / Pinkowsky) m. Nathan or Henry FEINBERG.
Their Jewish names were Toby Etta and Nisen. They had 3 children before
he died.

2. Israel DAVIS m. Jeanette (Nechie) Goldsmith and they had 4 children
before she died.

3. Israel and Ida met, married and had children together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have found all the descendants of Israel and Ida.
I have found almost all the descendants of Israel and Jeanette.
But: the descendants of Ida and first husband Nisen are more elusive.
Third child Joseph FEINBERG DAVIS became a lawyer in NYC.
Joseph married a woman named Blanche. He died of appendicitis abt 1898,
about the time of the birth of his only child, a daughter named Helene
DAVIS.
Blanche remarried Mr. STERN; they may have had a son named Leo STERN,
who lived in the Grosse Pointe, Michigan area. --
Leo may have had a daughter, Debby STERN.
Blanche and Mr. Stern may have had a second son, named Edgar STERN.
Helene Davis assumed her stepfather's surname and was known as
Helene D. STERN.
In 1917, aged 19, Helene married George J. DE PINNA. They had a son,
George L. DE PINNA. When George L was two years old, his father died.
Helene D. Stern De Pinna married an Otto COHEN (who had been married
to her late husband's sister, Marie V. De Pinna).
Otto and first wife, Marie, had two children Adelaide COHEN (1905--?) and
Maree COHEN (1921-1984)
Otto and Helene had a daughter Doris S COHEN (prob b. after 1926).
Doris married a Richard Anderson (1921-1977).
I think they had a child (deduced >from Helene's death notice in the NY
Times.)
Helene's son George L. DE PINNA (b1919) died in 2000.
He had 2 children. The son has an unlisted phone number.
I spoke to a daughter, sent her an email and gave her ways of checking
my legitimacy.
but she refused to even tell me where Blanche or any of the family
was buried!
Does anyone recognize these names or have suggestions on how to find the
son, Geoffrey, Doris Cohen Anderson or Debby Stern?
Photographs of immigrants? #general
Wendygriswold <wendygriswold@...>
Hi, all.
Someone please tell me if I'm hallucinating. I have a recollection of
hearing that there is an archive somewhere (NY?) of photographs taken of
arriving immigrants, as they got off the boat, so it would have some
chronological order to it.
I was not concerned about it at the time because I figured I'd never find
the immigration information on my family, but guess what ... (thank you
again, Steve Morse).
Yes, I would recognize faces, but does such an archive exist?
Many thanks and happy Chanukkah,
Uzlany/Mt.Skrill/Skriloff Circle #belarus
Deborah Fox <debfox@...>
I am researching Uzlany (Uzlian, Uzlyany, Yuslan) south of Minsk. I have
traced the FOX/FUCHS and SKRILOFF families there to the 1700's. Family
stories claim that a SKRILOFF ancestor was a draft dodger >from another area
and needed a new name. He named himself Skriloff, after Mount Skrill, which
was nearby. I cannot find a Mount Skrill anywhere near Minsk, or in nearby
Poland, Russia, etc. I am also looking for a group called the Skriloff
Circle, members of that family who used to meet in NYC. I have heard that
they still meet occasionally.
Play on names, Searching ?ICKLER, ?ICHLER, ?ISLER #belarus
Rachelle <rlberliner@...>
This may be a longshot for the JACOBS family search for the original
surname. However, it also may bring some answers. I would appreciate your
thoughts on this. Please answer me privately.
Since our English cousin was unsure of the original surname of our
grandfather, I am curious whether or not Ellis Island or any departure port
could have also been unsure of spelling. For example: Any letter preceding
the "I" in ICKLER/ICHLER/or ISLER would have changed the name completely. I
have searched both FTJP and JGFF, using the D-M soundex.
An "A" or "E" would still make the same sound. However, any consonant (or 2
together, such as St, Sp, etc.) could drastically change the name. If family
came >from Poland, Przasnysz, Posen, Prussia, or anywhere directly to the
U.S. without first living in the UK for awhile, they would not have known to
search their family in the U.S. with our JACOBS name and today, we would not
know how to search for them. Since the family was Orthodox, I assume that
New York and/or Baltimore would be their residence of choice.
Thank you in advance for giving your time and thoughts to this.
