JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
A Riga in Ukraine?
#ukraine
philapple@...
On a 1936 declaration of intention, the applicant stated that he was born in Riga,
Poltava, Russia." I am sure that this person knew as well as anyone that Riga was the capital of Latvia, but surely also knew where he was born, and knew of a town or shtetl named Riga in Poltava Province. In 1939, he repeated this information about Riga on his naturalization petition. It could be that the applicant pronounced the name of his town correctly, but the clerk who typed up the declaration heard "Riga" and that is what ended up on the document. I made a thorough search of Where Once We Walked, but could not find a town in Ukraine that even remotely resembled "Riga." I know that later in life the applicant and his family moved to Romny, Ukraine. Perhaps this "Riga" is near Romny. Is anyone aware of a shtetl, village, town or city in Ukraine that sounds like Riga? Hello, all,
I would like to know the name(s) -- Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, English -- and significance, if any, of the particularly type of headgear worn by the bearded man in these two pictures: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5639 http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5640 Were these any particular kind of yarmulke and hat or were they standard-issue for this place and time (Kishinev, Bessarabia, ca. 1900) for a middle-aged Jewish man? Do they signify anything about the profession of the wearer? Please reply directly to me. If interest is expressed, I'd be happy to post a summary. Sincerely, Marc L. Searching for STEIN, but Not the One you Think
#general
Adam Stein <adam@...>
As you can see below, I list STEIN (Sarny, Ukraine). However, that is not the
STEIN I'm looking for. The STEIN listed below is on my mother's side. I also have a totally unrelated STEIN on my father's side. I don't even have enough information to list it below. I'll list the few names I do have and hopefully somebody recognizes something. I've tried online sites (JewishGen, death index, grave sites, etc), but nothing matches or I don't have enough information to prove a match. I keep checking back once in a while in case anything new pops up. I've already uploaded my complete family tree to FTJP, so people can check any of the names listed below for further connections if I have them. Jack STEIN married Sarah STABINSKY. They had a child, Emanuel, born in 1910. Emanuel died sometime between 1953 and 1957. There is a rumor that Emanuel had a brother named Nathan, but I have no concrete evidence of that. Emanuel married Anna FRIEDMAN August 9, 1936. Anna's parents were Oscar and Ida FRIEDMAN. Emanuel and Anna had one child, Stanley George STEIN. Stanley was born February 1, 1941 and died February 8, 1999. He married Belle STEIN (STEIN is her maiden name as well as her married name -- no relation like I said above). Stanley and Belle had two children; Adam (me) and Mandy. Unfortunately, my father passed away several years ago before I became interested in genealogy. There were never any other family members that my mother or I am aware of to even ask or look up information on besides the named listed above. My father never spoke of his father's family (I don't think his father told him anything to begin with). Thanks in advance for any help. YUDLEVITZ - Mystery Town Leton, Russia
#general
Jeff Miller
A big thank you to those who responded to my posting about the mystery town Leton,
Russia. I am confident that the suggestion that Leton, Russia is likely Lita or Litau, meaning the country Lithuania rather than any particular town, is the correct interpretation. Based on naturalization papers which I have, which I view as a primary document, I conclude that Yane YUDLEVITZ was likely a brother of my grandfather, Avrum Yitzhak YUDELOWITZ, originally >from Panevezys. My challenge now is to find Yane YUDLEVITZ' descendants. I know in the US the family first lived in New Jersey, but relocated early on in the 1900s to the Los Angeles area. Other names of related family members include Etta GORE (the name FORER is also listed as her mother's maiden name). She was born in 1898 and died in Los Angeles in 1985. Also Edith YUDLEVITZ, born 1900 or 1901, died in San Bernardino in 1970. Irving (Isidore) YUDLEVITZ born 1905, died in Los Angeles in 1987. Also Sophia born 1902. If anyone has any information or recommendations, please contact me privately. Jeff Miller Maryland SingingtM@comcast.net

ZYLBERMAN/ROTENBERG from Mlawa
#general
Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>
I've just discovered a Zylberman link to Mlawa.
Boruch Jciek ZYLBERMAN (age 19) and his 18 year old wife Ryfka (nee ROTENBERG) had a girl in Mlawa named Ryfka in 1864. Boruch Jciek was born in 1845 in Swiniary and his birth was recorded in nearby Chorzele. Zylberman is a relatively rare name in Mlawa and Ryfka's birth is the first of a group that include Abram (1867), Dawid (1869), Berek Eliasz (1876), Chawa Laia (1878), Chejwet (1881) and Chaim Mordka (1883). Note that I have not yet ordered the Mlawa records for these but am assuming that they are the children of Boruch Jciek and Ryfka since no earlier Zylberman records have been found in Mlawa to date. If this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at meyers01@comcast.net Marty Meyers *** MODERATOR NOTE: One of JewishGen's most heavily visited sites is the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) and family connections are being made more and more frequently. If you have not already done so, please log onto www.jewishgen.org/jgff and using the ENTER/MODIFY procedure enter and register all the surnames of interest to your family research. As you learn about more names and places of origin, they can always be added, but only **you** can keep your own listings up to date.

I've just discovered a family link to the SZPIRO family in Przasnysz.
Golda KASTELBERG was married to Motel DZIEDZIC and their grandson Josek DZIEDZIC married my great-grandmother's sister Szajna ZYLBERMAN. After Motel died in 1848, Golda remarried in 1850 a Mosiek Hersz SZPIRO, son of Hersz Jankiefowicz and Royza (nee HERTZBERG) SZPIRO. So Josek's father, who was named after his father who died earlier in 1848, would have been brought up in the SZPRIO household and would have known no other father. If this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at meyers01@comcast.net Marty Meyers

Mount Chewron Cemetery

Jerome Seligsohn <jselig1315@...>
Old genealogists don't die; they transliterate. Working on archiving the papers of
the Bolshowtzer Arbeiter Lodge no. 517 IOBA today at YIVO Archives I encountered a mystery which threw me into a researching tizzy. Chewron was not to be found anywhere. The jgsny website offered a Mtt Hebron bural site but no Chewron. Google was no help. Finally, an exteremely bright and gifted genalogist hit on the solution. Chewron was the attempt of the Yiddish speaking lodge to approximate the sound of Hebron in English. The case was solved. The message is never give up on a name no matter how ridiculous if may first appear to be. Jerome Seligsohn volunteer archivist YIVO
