Re: Need information from Merthyr Tydfil, So. Wales #general

Dear Olga -

As a proud former Merthyr resident, (born and bred), I have to tell you
that there is no synagogue existing in the town, although the building
is still there and used for secular purposes. The address you give was
indeed the synagogue (Union street); in 1903, it would have been in
it's prime.

You may obtain some information via the website of the JCR-UK Special
Interest Group, who have some details of the former community.

I have no idea where the records, if any, would be kept now. I strongly
suspect they don't exist any more. When the building was closed in the
1980's, the contents were distributed, but I don't know where they went.
The torah scrolls, I think, went to Gateshead (North-east England)
Yeshiva; some of the items to our local museum (but they didn't know where
when I last visited them).

I would hazard a guess that any records might be in the custody of a former
member or members, but since they're scattered all over the world or no
longer with us, I can't make a better guess.

Hope this helps.

There is a family story that my grandfather spent some time in Wales as a
rabbi or teacher before immigrating to the United States. Is there a
Synagogue in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales to which I could write and see if
his name is in their books back in 1903 or earlier?

Karmina BAKALEINIK #general

egrdn@...

Three of the Pages of Testimony for my Goldsholl family were submitted by
Karmina BAKALEINIK who is described as a relative in Russia.

Recently I have received translations for several old family letters, some
written >from Wel'ka Glusha and a few >from Siberia. In one of the letters >from
Siberia, Manya Goldsholl mentions her daughters Anna and Carmina.

Family lore tells of two Goldsholl daughters who were in Siberia and "got
away" to Israel. I think that Anna and Carmina or Karmina may be those
sisters. I assume BAKALEINIK is Karmina's married name. If I am correct,
Anna and Karmina are my second cousins. Has anyone on this list any knowledge
of them?

Re: INTRO - researching ROSENSWEIG family from Germany #germany

Gary Blatt <garyblatt@...>

Unless I missed something, Gary, you didn't say how you know that they came
from Germany to begin with. We have Rosenzweigs >from Trencin County
Slovakia as well as >from East Galicia, for instance.
Israel Pickholtz
Well there is the real issue. It seems that some of the living relatives
heard a story that he left Germany to avoid conscription in the German army
only to arrive in Poland and became conscripted in the Polish army. However,
no one can seem to recall the town or region in Germany. My focus is of
course within my family to glean any more details about this event. In the
meantime, I am using the internet as a resource as well. Thanks,
