soundex searching of online directories #romania

Logan J. Kleinwaks

Because of several requests, I have added the capability to perform
Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex searches to the search engine for online historical
directories at www.kalter.org/search.php. This feature is more
computationally intensive, so please do not use it excessively, or else the
site will slow down considerably and I will have to remove it. If you have
any successes using this feature, or if you have other ideas of how to
improve on the search engine, please let me know.

Thanks and best regards,

Interesting.

I just looked at this site and it showed, not the time when a person was it
the listed address, but their month and year of birth. Several, including
my entry, had nothing for that, and in a few cases the database had it
wrong. It was off by 20 years in the case of my sister.

Aside >from trying to list birthdates, I don't see anything that might be
troublesome here. However, it is noted that this is described as a Beta
site and will be on line until 31 March. Presumably it is continually
changing.
While this may work for most genealogy, in some cases people do not want
their presence, addresses or other information to be so available. In
my own genealogical work, a few relatives had had bad experiences in
their part of the families and they react poorly to contact.

Additionally, some people do not want their address or phone or birth
dates made available. Sites like this assume they have no right to such
privacy - something which is difficult to convince anyone of.
People who do not want their names made public, nor their addresses,
especially in conjunction with their telephone numbers, have a special
problem if they also desire to be listed in the telephone directory. Unless
I have again overlooked something, it is really only the birthdate (often
off by several decades) that the website in question adds to what is
revealed about virtually every US resident by virtue of being a telephone
subscriber.

In all candor, I think the sensitivity you describe is grossly exaggerated,
with no basis in reality.

To be clear, if one were to publish identifying details such as addresses
and the like in a genealogical chart, that would be a serious infringement
of privacy. Separated >from the chart, neither is an infringement. Suppose,
for example, an individual named e.g. "Morris Cohen" appears on a published
chart. There must be tens of thousands of people with this name in the
English speaking world. Which one is he, in the absence of identifying
details? Except for people with exceedingly rare names, of course.

It's not a perfect world and there are some sticky things - like this -
to which we all really need to be sensitive.

ISAACS of Ipswich (or Chelmsford?) #unitedkingdom

Jon Myers <emquad@...>

After researching (with help of some at JGSGB) my ISAACS ancestors of
Ipswich for years without any positive feedback, recently I received an
extraordinary and unsolicited e-mail >from a lady in Swansea who told me
that she, too, was descended >from Israel (a k a Asher) ISAACS (c.1735-1837)
of Ipswich, in a descent which makes her my 4th cousin once removed.

The open question is whether my ISAACS ancestor is related to the ISAACS
family whose Israel ISAACS of Chelmsford (c.1735-????) was progenitor of
the 1st Marquess of Reading, for which see Burke's Peerage (p. 2376 in the
106th edition, 1999). The marriage listed does not match what I have, but
as my Asher lived to 102 (per his DC), anything is possible. The lady from
Swansea told me there was a family lore in her ISAACS that they are,
indeed, related to the Reading ISAACs.

Any comment appreciated as to whether we are dealing with one Israel ISAACS
born "c.1735" or two born "c.1735", >from Chelmsford and Ipswich. According
to an expert researcher, "my" Israel was named Asher ben Isaac Ibshits,
therefore >from Ipswich, and indeed his daughter, my ggg-grandmother Betsy
ISAACS said she was >from Ipswich on the census of 1851.

Re: Lilyan Tashman #yiddish

David Harris <dorsharris@...>

In an earlier message, Kandi Wasser was seeking information about the
actress Lilyan TASHMAN that might lead to a family connection.

According to the April 21, 1937 edition of the New York Times, Lilyan
Tashman (who died in 1934), had been married to the movie actor Edmund
LOWE. Because of estate issues, two sisters of Lilyan Tashman were named in
the newspaper. They were Jennie ROBINSON and Hattie BLUMENSON. The article
is unclear as to whether it was the Supreme Court of the state of
California or the state of New York that was hearing the dispute.

A search for the family connection through the sisters might prove
fruitful. Hattie Tashman Blumenson (born Jan. 10, 1892) died in Contra
Costa county, CA on Oct. 20, 1953. Obtaining the death certificate may give a clue
to any descendents that might be able to assist in the search.
