Is there any reasonable chance that a child born in 1917 in Vienna to E Galician
parents would have received the Jewish name Noah after an ancestor named
Nachman? (This Noah had a seciular name which was entirely unrelated.)

Seeking Any And All Information on Anna & David RAKOFF, Emma & Samuel MENDELSON #general

sacredsisters3@...

Hello To All Researchers
I am trying to find out as much as I can about my ancestors on my
mother's side. I don't know very much about them and I am hoping there
are some descendants out there who can tell me what I want to know. I
am looking for any information on my great-grandparents David & Anna
Rakoff and also Samuel & Emma Mendelson. Samuel is supposedly brother
to Anna. I have a lot of old photos, most >from the new york and others
from russia. The pictures I believe originally belonged to my
great-grandmother so the people in these photos has to be her family.
I am hoping some one out there can help me unravel some of the mystery
surrounding these families, because I can't seem to find anything on
them. I have put quite a lot of those photos on the jewishgen site, so
you can see for yourself what they look like. Hopefully someone will
be able to identify some of them for me. I do have a few documents
along with the photos. I have David & Anna's petitions and
naturalization papers. I also have Anna's death record. I also have a
marriage record dated 1940 even though they got married before then
according to the other papers. Thats one mystery I would like solved.
Why did they get married again. They had two Kids Ruth And Murray
birth years 1922 & 1923. Any information and help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Sarah Greenberg

I found my relative, Alfred DEUTSCH, on the Hamburg 1939 German

middle name according to the census list, is Israel, and that of his

noticed, while traversing through the microfilm that a great number
of clearly Jewish names in Hamburg all had the middle name of Israel
if they were male, and Sarah if they were female. Is this possibly a
generic middle name? Was it done as a protest, and if so, was it true
all across Germany? Why was this done?
Dear Susan,
it was NOT a protest, but one of the laws arising >from the Nuremberg
laws stated that starting on August 17, 1938 every German Jew was

Re: Coverage of "Maajan - Die Quelle" Journal #germany

Regarding my earlier post about the areas
covered by the Journal "Maajan - Die Quelle,"
I have further been informed that "...the Swiss
(major) section often deals with ancestral roots
in adjoining areas, i.e.: Alsace, Baden-Wuertemberg
and Austria, and that the Hamburg section often
reflects Sephardic links, thanks to early refugees
and their cemeteries in Altona; even links to Schleswig."

I thought that this information might be helpful to our members.

I understand that there are plans to develop an All Ukraine Database. The
"Jewish Agricultural Colonies in the Ukraine" site
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Colonies_of_Ukraine/ has much material
which it would like to donate to the All Ukraine Database. As there is
overlap between with UkraineSIG, we would like to combine our efforts. Aside
from the material already on the site, we are in the process of scanning,
translating and listing more material. We would like to hear >from the

Hungarian (and German) Translation #general

Fern Ward <FRWard@...>

I'm hoping someone can help me with a Hungarian translation of a letter
written in 1926 >from Maramaros-Szighet to relatives in Brooklyn NY. I think
this letter was written by my great-grandmother to my grandfather and I'm
hoping to glean a last bit of family information >from this letter.
Apparently there was a family fight going on (I'm airing our 80-year old
dirty laundry on the internet) and I'm really hoping to find out the why's
and where's of this fight and why my grandparents never acknowledged having
any other relatives.

The letter is a 3-pager, listed on

following viewmates:
VM 5857, VM 5858, VM 5859.

Re: Land Manifests to New York from Canada in 1905 #general

Peter Zavon <pzavon@...>

"Hilary Henkin" <hilary@proppersource.com> wrote in part:

You may want to check into the several lists for people crossing the
Canada/US border into the US. The most well-known are the St.
Alban's Lists for Vermont and Maine, but there are three or four others -
search the JewishGen Discussion group Archives for the lists.
I think it very important to understand that the St. Albans Lists (note lack
of apostrophe) is not limited to US entries through Vermont and Maine. The
name of the list refers to St. Albans, VT, which was the regional
headquarters for the US immigration agency at one point. (It is
conveniently near Montreal, where lots of migration activity was occuring.)
But the lists compiled there covered all land crossings into the US from
Canada along the entire boarder - Atlantic to Pacific - for a time. Later
the St. Albans Immigration District covered only the eastern half of the
boarder.

While there are also separate lists for smaller Great Lakes ports (including
Niagara Falls and Rochester, NY among others) I believe these are generally
for periods before that covered by the St Albans list and focus on water
arrivals. Before the very late 19th Century, arrivals by water over one of
the Great Lakes were recorded in ships' manifests but land crossings were
not recorded. St. Albans would seem to be the only collection covering
entry by rail in the eastern US.

Greetings all,
Wondering if it is possible that Gussie could be
an Americanized form if Hinde/Hinda/Inda, etc. She is
from Kamenets-Podolskiy(now Ukraine)to NY about 1907.
Also, what could the American form of Cheikel/Heikel
(her husband) be? Their last name was Weiner.
Thanks,
