Rabbi Jacob Z. LAUTERBACH #rabbinic

Menachem Butler <menachembutler@...>

Dear Rav-SIGers:

Is anyone aware of genealogical and/or historical records about
Rabbi Jacob Z. LAUTERBACH (1873-1942)? Rabbi LAUTERBACH received his
rabbinic ordination >from the Orthodox Berlin Rabbinical Seminary
(though it was later revoked) and was later a professor at Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati, and also the chairman of the Responsa
Committee for the CCAR (Reform) for nearly two decades.

I have checked the basic books [in English] relevant to Berlin
Orthodoxy of the late 19th and early 20th century and I have been
unable to find any substantial relevant information about him.

Any thoughts?

Chag Kasher ve-Sameach,

Thank you very much,
Menachem Butler

Need Help Finding Ship Manifest #general

Bridget Wynne <rabbiwynne@...>

Hello:

I've found a relative of mine's ship passenger record on the Ellis Island
Database, but I cannot find the scanned manifest for him, using the EIDB or
the Morse One-Step web pages. Can anyone else help me find the manifest?

He is listed as Mc Turket, immigrating to the U.S. on the New York, sailing
from Southampton to New York, arriving April 19, 1897, 27 years old, with
his last residence being Russia. His Ellis Island Passenger ID number is
103034170532.

Now I want to see the manifest itself and get the rest of the story on him!

Thanks and Chag Sameach/Happy Passover,

Yiddish theater - Children without a home #general

nitram <martin@...>

In about 1943 my mother-in-law was in a yiddish play at the Lincoln
Theater in Philadelphia. She played one of the twins in a play by
Louis Frieman called Children Without A Home or Kinder On a Heym. She
has very fond memories of those days and I would love to find the
script or some of the songs such as Feygele Un Khanele; Author Isador
Lillian, Composer Ilya Triling.

Any advise on where to find this.

Thank you

My questions:

(1) How can I determine the name of the school he attended? Was there
a school in Odessa that specialized in areas like the ones he studied?

(2) How common was it for someone >from the Kovno area to study things

Latvia SIG Newsletter #latvia

Dear Latvia SIGers,

I need your help. The number of articles submitted for publication in the
newsletter has been declining and so I am asking each of you to consider
submitting artilces. Many of you have interesting stories to tell about your
personal experiences in genealogy research or your visits to Latvia/Estonia
and its shtetls. Others may have interesting historical information about
their own families and how they were affected by historical events of the
time. Still others may have had interesting experiences and surprises
resulting >from their own research. Some of you have discovered distant
relatives that live nearby and close relatives that live far away. All of
these, and other stories, are of interest to the membership. Photographs
documenting your travels in pursuit of your Latvian/Estonian roots are
always welcome. So please share you experiences with others via the
newsletter.

Send your articles directly to me, either in MS Word or as a text file. I
accept photos in any standard graphic file format, but I prefer JPEG if
possible.

I am trying to get the next issue out in early June, about a month before
the IAJGS meeting in Las Vegas, so I need you to submit articles to me by 15
May 2005.

Thanks so much for your help.

Latvia SIG Luncheon at the IAJGS Meeting in Las Vegas #latvia

Barry Shay

I have gotten a number of inquiries about the Latvia SIG luncheon, which is
scheduled for Thursday, July 14th at 12:30. While the luncheon is on the
schedule and can be found on the Daily Planner and is assigned to LAUGHLIN
III, it does not appear on the Luncheon Registration URL. Consequently, at
this time it is not possible to register for the luncheon on-line. I am
working with the organizers in Las Vegas to remedy this situation, but so
far the problem remains. Hopefully, we can solve the problem in a reasonable
and timely manner. I will keep you informed.

Thanks for your patience.
