JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

a French person, I'm not really familiar with the Jewish names in America since many immigrants changed their names. I would like to know if the names MASH, LION and KENNEDY can be Jewish (for example, do you know any Jewish family with these names?" There have been various replies about this and Mathilde Tagger's was closest to the truth [re Kennedy]. Robert Israel in Vancouver wrote "KENNEDY is of course a common Irish/Scottish/English name, and I can't think of a plausible Jewish derivation, except that if somebody wanted to choose a very non-Jewish sounding name starting with K this might be one that came to mind (especially after 1960 or so)." This and similar replies have missed the point relating to Hungarian Ken[n]edys! I knew Hungarian Ken[n]edys as a child in Alexandria, Egypt in the 1940s. They were certainly not thinking of Gaelic antecedants! If you search the Yad Vashem database you will see where the name came from. Many Jews with the name KOHN changed their names much earlier than the 1960s and many, many years before they ever thought of emigrating to English-speaking countries [mainly the UK or USA]! As with the name KERRY; this was chosen by a certain KOHN family now prominent in the US, years before they emigrated to the USA; the name-change documents are available in Vienna. They were never thinking of Boston, Mass. at the time! My own KOHN family living in Grossbock in the far north of Bohemia since the early 1700s and >from 1850s in Vienna, changed their name to KERNER in Vienna in the 1890s. There are many early variants of KOHN I have come across in Vienna, Germany and Hungary and they include Kerr, Kende and Kary. In the Zentralfriedhof, Vienna we can find a Johanna KENDE who died aged 53 in May 1898. The Yad Vashem database reveals KENDI, KENDY, KENDE, KENEDI and CHENDI >from Transyvania, Hungary and Subcarpathian Ruthenia [then in Czechoslovakia]. Here are the KENEDI burials in the Jewish Vienna Zentralfriedhof: [date of burial is given]: Kenedi Alfred age 74 20.05.1954 Kenedi Arthur age 45 1.02.1915 Kenedi Ernst age 56 24.11.1938 and here is one KENEDI family all buried together [nb Julius was born in 1846 and I am sure never touched foot in the USA or heard of the Irish Kennedys]: KENEDI Ernst age 56 24.11.1938 Helene age 44 22.05.1900 Herbert age 7 weeks 18.07.1906 Julius age 52 29.09.1898 These were probably all KOHNS to start with and they "hungarified" their names. There were definitely Jewish KENEDIs a long time ago and some of these may then have anglicised the Hungarian spelling even further to Kennedy when arriving in the USA or UK. The surviving KENDIs and KENDES may also have taken this route to a more anglo-sounding "Kennedy". This does not rule out that there may have been some de-novo name changes of immigrants as they arrived in the English-speaking world without the intermediate KENDE/KENDI/KENEDI stage! All I wish to stress is that the name and its variants was used amongst Hungarian Jews many, many years ago. As I do not speak Hungarian, I do not know if the name KENDE and variants has an actual meaning. Celia Male [UK]

HYMOFF from Poland

Jenni Hymoff Koeppel
Hello again,
I got the following information >from the Waltham Archives regarding my ggf, Israel HYMOFF Set 6 1 document 3 pages – Israel Hymoff Petition for Naturalization Born Lublin Russian Poland Sept 11 1871 Arrived NY,NY June 26 1889 They do not have the name of the ship or any further information. I know that he married Adeline Pauline KADETSKY widow WATERS around 1890, they had 5 surviving children (they and their own children all accounted for but the names and birth years don't match with the children named in the 1900 census so there must have been a few that did not survive). . In the 1910 census an Israel Hymuth is registered in Rutland State Hospital and as coming >from Germany - we are fairly sure it is the same person. Although the family had not moved, they are not listed in the 1910 census. Adeline died in 1918 in the flu epidemic. In 1920 Israel is listed in the census as living with his daughter and son in law Max, as a matter of a fact, all Israel's children were living with poor Max- he married an entire family, not just a wife! 1. Any suggestions on how to find out the ship he arrived in NY on to see the manifests and maybe find out where he was really >from and 2. How could I get records >from the hospital, that no longer exists according to Google info. 3. Any recommendations on what our next step should be? Thanks in advance for all your help, cheers, Jenni Hymoff HYMOFF and KADETSKY, Poland KRAVETSKY and REDLER, Ukraine

Register for Kings County and find out who owned the property at the time. A title abstract company will do it for a fee. BTW, current Hagstrom map shows only Christopher *Ave.* in Brooklyn. There is a Christopher *St.* in Manhattan, New York (CITY) County. Good Luck, Steve

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>
My great grandfather Franz GINSBERG was a Member of
Parliament (MLA) for King Williams Town on and off from 1908 until about 1927. I wish to discover moreabout the kinds of legislation with which he was involved. In the UK all proceedings (debates etc) that occur in the Houses of Parliament are recorded word for word in a series of volumes known as "Hansard". Does such a publication exist for the South African Parliament? If yes, then what is it called? The period that interests me is 1908-1927, and the Parliament(s) that interest me are those that governed the Cape Colony/Province including the Provincial Council, which he joined as a member in 1910. Thanks, Adam Yamey, London, UK <adamandlopa@yahoo.co.uk>

Quite often the moderator of this group adds the suggestion about donating
unwanted certificates by clicking on the link http://www.jgsgb.org.uk/alluk/certificates.asp However, in the case of BIrth Certificates, the link seems to not allow adding Birth Certificates with a year later than 1905. Dear Friends,
Following Fay Bussgang' s recent posting, could someone please explain the efficient way to obtain records >from Lodz Books of Residents. I need to search these books for many of my branches, starting at early 19th century till 1931. Can it be done without hiring a professional researcher? If I visit the archive in person - will it be more efficient rather than writing a letter to the archive? Will I be able to search the books myself? I would appreciate any other advice. Thanks a lot Orit Lavi Tsukey-Yam, Israel

I noticed your reply to Tzilla Kratter regarding her search for Schleime KIRSHENBAUM. Are the Personnenblatt-Karty Meldunkowe >from 1918-1920 and the Ksiegi Ludnosci (until 1931) which list all legal residents of Lodz you mentioned available online? When contacting the Lodz State Archives - can you email them or correspond in English? If the records are not online, can they just copy the pages for the requested family name or does someone actually research this? Lastly, are the Lodz State Archives for the city of Lodz proper or the whole province? Thank you for your anticipated answers. Nicki Chodnoff Columbus Ohio
