May someone please make sense of an entry in the 1902 New York City
directory?
The exact quote is as this:
< Abramson Max physician 54 Eldridge, extracts 76 Forsyth & manager
118 Canal >
Looks to me there are 3 work places, but no home address. What these
work places could be? Why there is no home address? What extracts
means in this context? What could he manage at 118 Canal?
Any clarification and explanation will be appreciated.
To me it looks like he lives at 54 Eldridge.
On January 21, 1985, a fire at 54 Eldridge Street killed two tenants and
left 125 people homeless

cemetery statistics #latvia

Logan J. Kleinwaks

Can anyone supply or suggest where to find statistics about the state of
Latvian cemeteries and their documentation? I am especially interested in
quantified descriptions of:

1) the rate at which the cemeteries are being destroyed (by natural or other
means)

2) the rate at which inscriptions on the matzevot are becoming illegible

3) the extent of written or photographic documentation of the matzevot

If there are any standards by which cemeteries are considered endangered, I
would also be interested in knowing which Latvian cemeteries qualify.

Thank you very much and best regards,

If Jews ever thought that this was a "Christian symbol" that might
explain why in some London Jewish cemeteries, instead of a broken
branch, one sees a broken column (as in an architectural style
column).

And we (in the US) also have the broken column.

Re: ED for NY State 1885 Census #general

Joy Rich <joyrichny@...>

Marian, New York didn't take a state census in 1885. No censuses were
taken in New York between the 1875 census and the 1892 census.
Censuses for New York County exist for only 1855, 1905, 1915, and 1925.

I have a Manhattan address and would like to see who lived there in 1885. Is
there an index for the 1885 NYS census which will tell me the ED for that
address?

broken branches #general

Eliana Aizim

In my grandfather´s tombstone there´s a drawing of two branches
with leaves, that are crossing each other in the bottom. Between
the two branches there is a Star of David. My grandfather died in
Brazil, in 1914, when he was 49 years, working as a peddler.
There are two different versions to explain the reason of his death,
both has to do with gun. In this case, the drawing of the branches
is consistent with a "truncated life".
