Labun, Ukraine #general

Stewart Bernstein <skbernst123@...>

I have been researching my BARANSHTEYN/BERRNSTEIN
family >from Labun, Ukraine for a number of years.
Labun was/is located very close to the town of
Polonnoye. Labun was totally destroyed in WWII, and
it's Jewish inhabitants all murdered.

Just as a point of information, some of my personal
family photos and documents were used in the
Polonnoye, Ukraine Web-site's graphics.

I recently ran a quiery in the site's archives, and
found nothing with regard to Labun. I believe Labun
was rebuilt as Novolabun, but even that new name
rendered no positive results.

Any Labun researchers out there? As any reseacher, I'm
always searching for any new information.

Otwock, Poland cemetery #general

Howard Margol

In the August 5 issue of the Atlanta Jewish Times, in Atlanta, Georgia is an
interesting article about the Jewish cemetery in Otwock, Poland. On a recent
trip to Poland, 12 of the 32 people on a teen mission >from the North Lanier
Baptist Church in Cumming, Georgia cleared brush, dug up pieces of headstones
and tried to put Jewish grave markers back together.

On Sunday, August 7 the church will host an event at 4 p.m. where trip
participants can share their stories, pictures, and rubbings of the gravestones.
For more information call 770-781-5433 or visit www.northlanier.org

I am passing this information on for those who may be interested in the
Otwock, Poland cemetery. My ancestors were not >from Poland so I cannot tell you
anymore than the above.

Re: Ferro Meridian #general

For the quick responses, thank you very much!

The Austrian Empire used
the Ferro Meridian, which passes through Hierro (or Ferro) Island, the
western-most of the Canary Islands. This makes sense for a European
land
power, as everything in Europe would have an East Longitude. Very
little
opportunity for that messy math connected with comparing points on both
sides of the Prime Meridian.

The Ferro Meridian is 17 degrees 40 minutes East of the Greenwich
Meridian.
Hence the difference you noted.
As I might have noticed, the upper left corner of each maplet reads
"ostlich v. ferro" which obviously (now) means "Eastward of Ferro!"

This has been an educational experience!

Sincerely,
Steven B. Tesser,

At least it lists names as an aid to research.

Standard discalimer...I have no commercial interest in this site.
It says on the Moving Here project (UK National Archive) webpage
http://www.movinghere.org.uk/galleries/roots/jewish/country/latvia2.htm

that Aleksandrs Feigmanis (who seems to run balticgen.come) is a reputable
archival researcher and is available for hire.

It says that he many articles in Avotaynu's '>from Our Contributing Editors'
column.

He says in his webpage that he is >from the museum "Jews in Latvia"
http://www.muzeji.lv/guide/pages_e/hebreji.html.

I am not clear if he is employed by them (I am going away shortly and I
don't have time to research this) but to Western Europeans and Americans it
would probably seem strange that a possible employee of such an organisation
would hire their services out privately - having said that I would think
that there would be no problem in the Museum in charging for research
because no doubt they could do with the money.

Obviously different countries do things differently and in the
post-Communist world things have developed somewhat differently to the way
that they have in Western Europe and the US.

Re: Thank-You Vm6480/Vm6476 #general

Michele Troup

I would like to thank All the people that responded to my view mate posting
for My German document Vm6480. now in achieves.

It is general consensus that the names do not seem Jewish? and that this is
document with family names for army exemptions (only one Son) but there is
one column that has the heading for "religion" all that can be seen is 2
letters The first and last. Would any one be able to tell me what the
letters are? I think the first looks like a "Y" and the last a "T" I have
seen the original document 15 years ago before my aunt tore it. This is a
photo copy my other aunt sent me before it was burnt ( so I have been told)
I Think it said "Yudisht" or something of the like... I asked what that
meant the day I saw it. It was after that my aunt said to let sleeping dogs
lie, that branch has been cut off. Please note at the bottom of the page it
has a name Zoldak /Zoldok in hand writing, I believe that is a signature . I
did an Ellis Island Jewish name search "many came up." Maybe that is a Rabbi
any Ideas??? or does anyone know a Rabbi name that was similar in Sadagora
or Czernowitz, Bukowyna,or general area around 1900- 1903.

I would like to thank All the people that responded to my view mate posting
for My Latin document "Vm6476."
It is general consensus that this a "record" of a marrige performed
elsewhere, this makes more sense to me as I was always told that my gr grand
parents married in Bukowyna Austria, as I could not understand a Catholic
Marriage, as I know my gr Grandmother disliked the Catholics. But please
note the name recored on this document is again Zoldak as on the German
(Vm6480) the one >from Czernowitz but as the (Minster) who married them. Any
ideas on how to research a Rabbi or marriages performed in Czernowitz area
1900-1903

Thanks Again For any help I get
Michele
