JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

I am looking for an english translation of the book "Cities and towns in the
history of the Jews in Russia and Ukraine". This book was written by M. Oshrowitch and published in 1948 by the M. Osherowitch Jubilee Committee. It is two volumes and is an excellent way to learn about the small shtetls in the Ukraine. If you know where I can obtain a translation of this book, I will be very grateful. If no translation is available, I would be willing to pool resources with other Ukraine researchers to have the book translated. I have no idea what this might cost. Thanks. search for relatives
#austria-czech
Keith Hatfield <hatfield.1@...>
To all those researchers out there.I am still desperately searching for any
information on my relatives. The only information that I have to date, is the following: My Mother was Hanna WERNER, born August 21st 1928 in prague, Czechoslovakia. My Grandparents were: Otto WERNER born 28.4.1892 and Ester WERNER, born ADLER in Lodz, Poland 16.12.1904. My Maternal Great Grandparents were: (Ester's parents) Gerson ADLER born in the Zdunska,Wola district of Lodz, Poland 11.05.1877. His wife was Nach/Natalia ADLER nee MICHALOWICZ born Lodz, Poland, 4.1 or 23.12.1876. Their other children were two daughters Anna ADLER born on the 4.or 3.12.1911, Lodz, Poland and Ida ADLER born in Lodz, Poland born 14. 01.1909. They also had a son, Mosek Sljama (Moritz?) ADLER born on 22.3.1903 in Brezna, Lodz, Poland. He lived in Slany near Kladno, with Anna and his Mother Natalie and then they all moved to Prague. Otto's parent's names were; Max and Fanny WERNER, circa? Ida ADLER born 14. 01.1909 married in approximately 1930 a Jindrich HOFFMAN, born 25.O9.1905. I believe they immigrated to Palestine and were the people who cared for my Mother between the years 1939 and 1947. Does anyone recognise any of these people and know anything further about them? I would really love to find some relatives, more information or perhaps some photos. Regards Sherry hatfield MODERATOR NOTE: It's always good to list the names and places you are researching on the JewishGen Family Finder. In this case, we also recommend consulting the Lodz Area Research Group and the Israel Genealogical Society.

Sanatorium Furth, Vienna - Birth and Death Links
#austria-czech
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
Today was a very special day for me. I met for the first time, an early
member of our SIG - Frank Eisinger, in NY - we have not yet established a genealogical link , but we have a very strong link as we were both born at Sanatorium Furth, Schmidgasse, Vienna 8 - albeit nine years apart. It is now the heavily-guarded US Reference Center see: http://www.usembassy.at/en/embassy/arc.htm As soon as the Nazis aryanized this beautiful state-of-the-art hospital it was commandeered by them for their officers and top officials as a centre of excellence - after the war it finally reverted to the Americans. I recently read that the Habsburg family is claiming restitution of the building. The hospital was run by Dr Lothar FURTH. I know nothing about this Jewish family and its fate. Lothar apears on the Living Heirs Holocaust asset database list without a birth date - which is unusual. Does anyone have a link? All I do know is that the birth links Frank Eisinger and I have are apparently so strong that they kept us going for four hours and we could have talked for another four days. Our Viennese families were both from the 8th district, but I doubt they knew each other.I have only ever met one other baby born at Sanatorium Furth - he lives in Sydney, Australia. I presume there must be a few others alive, but I wonder who they are and where they live. The clientele was probably mainly Jewish. It was only when I retrieved the will of my great grandmother, Emma {nee BIACH} KOHN/KERNER in Vienna last year, that I discovered it was executed by her nephew, the lawyer Emil DUSCHNITZ [related to SIGGER Harold Chipman], and that she had died in the Sanatorium Furth some 20 years before I was born! She was born in Pressburg as one of 11 children of Emanuel BIACH and Fanny LEIDESDORF. It was mainly these children that have given me so many links on my tree. Sanatorium Furth was obviously our family hospital for generations. These links are fascinating too and should be registered on a family tree. Celia Male {U.K.} but currently in NY

Naming a Baby Girl
#general
Stan <natsnehoc@...>
Dear Genners,
As a first time 'Zaidy', I would appreciate any information or guidance regarding the following three questions: Can a baby girl be named after her recently deceased great grandfather, who has not as yet had an unveiling of his memorial? The girl was born some 4 months after the GGF's passing. She is now one week old, (and a real beauty!). Is (are) there any restriction(s) as to how long after her birth she should be named in the Synagogue? What would be the female version of the male name "Chaim"? I would like to ensure correctness in terms of religious and genealogical protocall. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Stan Cohen Toronto, Canada natsnehoc@... MODEARTOR NOTE: Only messages relating to Jwish Genealogy will be posted to the group. Religious practices are considerd off-topic to this list. Stan is encoureged to post a summary of the replies.

Dear Fellow Researchers:
I would be grateful for translation/interpretation assistance on a Hungarian marriage record. I post here because I believe several of the towns of birth are in Moravia, and I wish to ask whether anyone familiar with those towns might recognize them in the record. The record is an 1872 marriage for Sigmund BRAUNER and Betti NEUMAN in Komarom, Hungary. Since I have several images of the record, I have placed it on a web page rather than on ViewMate. I have indicated my specific questions on the web page. The URL is: http://www.patentstation.com/family2/braunerneumann.htm I would greatly appreciate any responses. Please respond directly to me at marc@.... Very truly yours, Marc D. Machtinger, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, U.S.A. email: marc@...
