What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?

So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?

Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.

Hi all,
I am looking for information on the SZTERSZTEIN & PIETRUCH families of Pultusk and the surrounding areas. The farthest I go back with my SZTERSZTEIN research (which is extremely minimal at this point) is to my great great great grandparents, Shulem SZTERSZTEIN and Yitka (maiden name unknown) - both of whom I assume passed away in Pultusk. Their daughter, Yenta SZTERSZTEIN (1844-1894), married my great great grandfather Kalman PIETRUCH (1837-1901) in Pultusk sometime before 1862. I assume that Yenta had siblings, but if there were I don't know anything about them. Kalman and Yenta PIETRUCH had 9 children: Tova Shprintza LASKO Yitzchak Mayer PIETRUCH Mendel PIETRUCH Avraham Shoel PIETRUCH Usher PIETRUCH Chava PIETRUCH Rachel Leah NOWYDWOR Zalman Leib PIETRUCH Yitka DANIEL (1974-1941) - who married Yehoshua Chaim DANIEL (1870-1837) - my great grandparents. As far as I know, all the PIETRUCH siblings passed away in Pultusk. However, their descendants eventually emigrated to the USA, Canada, Israel, and South America. If anyone knows anything about this SZTERSZTEIN & PIETRUCH family I would really love to hear back >from you. Thank you very much. I'm searching for an EDELSTEIN family >from Vilna who moved to Hazelton, Pennsylvania in the early 1900's. Their names were Michel EDELSTEIN and Sarah Miriam (maiden name unknown). Michel and Sarah Miriam EDELSTEIN both passed away in Hazelton, PA (Sarah Miriam in 1925). They had the following children (who also passed away in Hazelton, PA): Louis - Married Rose Singer around 1910. Passed away in 1949. Meyer - Never married. Sam - Never married (Meyer and Sam ran a pharmacy in Hazelton). Dora - Divorced (I don't know what her married name was). Ben - Married Bessie (maiden name unknown). They are related to my BLINDER - ZISKIND - KOWARSKI - MINKOWITZ family, but no one seems to know how or if it was through Michel or Sarah Miriam. I'm researching the RAPAPORT family >from Pultusk and Warsaw, Poland and would appreciate hearing >from anyone doing similar research. My father-in-law told me that his grandfather, Yekusiel Jacob (Ksiel) RAPAPORT, was born in Warsaw between 1880-1883, but on Ksiel's Petition for Naturalization it said that he was born in Pultusk. I searched the JRI-Poland database and came up with a number of RAPAPORTs >from Pultusk but on the JGFF there isn't anyone searching for that family. Ksiel's parents were Sholom David and Rivka Chaia RAPAPORT. I assume they were from Pultusk as well or at least lived there for a while. Their other children(that I know of) were: 1- Sarah (Rapaport) ANTOSOFSKY - born 1879 2- Rachel or Rose (Rapaport) DANIELS - born 1882 3- Possibly a brother - but I don't know his name Ksiel came to Newark, New Jersey in 1921 and later brought over his wife Faige (nee FRIEDMAN) and their children: Joseph, Mollie, Rose, and Sarah. I am looking for information on the GOLDSTEIN & DANIEL(S) families of Pultusk and the surrounding areas. The farthest I go back with my GOLDSTEIN research (which is extremely minimal at this point) is to my great great great grandparents, Yitzchak Isaac GOLDSTEIN and Chana (maiden name unknown). Yitzchak Isaac GOLDSTEIN died before 1865 in Poland (possibly Pultusk, but I'm not 100% sure). Their daughter, Miriam Rivka GOLDSTEIN (1838-1915) married my great great grandfather Yoseph DANIEL (1835-1894) in Pultusk sometime before 1865. I assume that Miriam Rivka had siblings, but if there were I don't know anything about them. Yoseph DANIEL and Miriam Rivka GOLDSTEIN had 9 children: Yitzchak Isaac DANIEL 3 daughters who died in infancy Breindel KOHN Berish DANIEL Yakov Aryeh DANIEL Sylka DANEIL Yehoshua Chaim DANIEL (1870-1837) - my great grandfather. He married Yitka PIETRUCH (1974-1941). All the DANIEL siblings passed away in Pultusk except for Berish who I believe came to the USA in the 1920's or 30's and changed his surname to DANIELS. Also, members of this family had a horse and buggy, and later a bus service, that ran between Pultusk and Warsaw, Poland. He was a plumber, master Children >from this marriage are: Jeanie Adler : born 27th September 1894 (14 Rose Street, Glasgow). Rebecca Adler : born 1st September 1897 (12 Crown Street, Glasgow) Annie Adler : born 12th November 1899 (12 Crown Street, Glasgow) Joseph Adler :(my grandfather) born 4th January 1902 (13 Adelphi Terrace,Glasgow) Morris Adler : born 26th February 1904 (12 Hospital Street, Glasgow) Louis Philip Adler : born 4th April 1909 (82 Thistle Street Glasgow) Golda Adler born 3rd August 1907 (19 Thistle Street, Glasgow) died on 23rd February 1914. No death certs for Myer or Sarah exist. It is possible that they moved to England or abroad. Seeking: Grandmother Matel/Martha/Molly/Malka FEUERBERG also,FAERBERBG

Dear Genners,
I will begin with my father and lead into what I know about his mother, my gm. My father is listed as Boruch FEUORBERG on ships manifest, arrival date Nov.16,1910. Birth record >from Poland listed as Baruch FEUERBERG, which was americanized to FAERBERG. Came >from Skala to USA through EllisIsland. His aunt Chawe BERLAD met him there and he went home with her to 75 Stanton Ave. [or Street ?] New York City. According to date of my father's arrival would he have been here during 1910 census? I was hoping this would help me find information about my gm. On my father's birth record she is listed as Matel FEUERBERG. Possibility that she came before my father and was living with this relative.Have not been able to find information about her arrival. I had a picture of my gm that was taken in a photo studio on Houston Street, New York City. In the back of the picture frame there was newspaper used for filling. It was just advertising ,Philadelphia Evening Bulletin dated Oct.30,1918. Don't know if that date means anything. I do know that she lived with my parents >from the time they married in May 1924. I have a copy of the 1930 census where she is listed as Martha, also known as Molly and Malka. She lived with us until the day she died in 1942. I do have my gm's death certificate which lists her husbands name as Solomon, her fathers name Yudel and her mother as Annie BRAINER, birth place Austria. My father's records show that he was born in Skala and I was lead to believe that is where they lived. I have tried EllisIsland , Castle Gardens and many other avenues with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please reply privately. I have one additional thought about getting Canadian immigration data:
If your relative happened to visit the U.S., after about 1895 or so, there may be a record when he or she crossed the border, and that record may possibly contain the date and ship of immigration to Canada. With a specific date and/or ship, your search for immigration recordsis made much simpler. These records are collectively known as the St. Albans Lists, but information was gathered by manyof the cities on the US-Canadian border, including Detroit, Buffalo, Rochester, Niagrara Falls, and many other cities. You can search the JewishGen Discussion group Archvies for details on these microfilms. Even if you have a year of arrival >from the census, having more details, and/or confirming that year, can be useful. Perfsonally, I found that the records kept by Detroit noted only that the person arrived in the US by railroad, but the Buffalo, NY records noted the year ship, port, and sometimes date of Canadian arrival. Rotterdam departures may be available, depending on which ship your relative traveled on. The Mormon Library has departure records of the Holland-America line on microfiche. There is both an index and the actual passenger lists. Since this is fiche, once you've ordered it, your local library gets to keep it forever. I did a bit of research, and the P. Caland was indeed a Holland-America ship, built in 1874. So you ought to be able to manage your way through the index and find the original record. Please note that, of course, the records are in Dutch . . . Which, using our familiar Latin alphabet, isn't too hard to work through. In my research, I came across a website which sells original ship memorabilia, including passenger lists. For the P. Caland, they have pasenger lists >from 1891 and 1892. Finding Town of Origin: the 1942 "Old Mens" Draft

Shari Kantrow asked how to find her grandfather's birth town. There is a wonderful
source I've used when i had no other place to go........the Old Men's draft - in 1942 all men born between 1877 and 1897 had to register. They completed these draft cards, which asked for place of birth. The registrations are in the local NARA (ie: Massachusetts for Boston, NYC for NY) and are indexed by county (ie: Bronx, Brooklyn), then by surname. When I use this resource, I also look around for relatives of the same surname. Happy Hunting!
