Has anyone heard >from people in the Jewish Gen organization in New Orleans.
They've been wonderfully helpful to me in the past, and I wondered how they
all are going. Not to mention to fact that I wonder if all their records
are OK.

I hope (but often I'm not sure) that the English-speaking folks on this
list realize that many contributors to the list are neither native nor
fluent speakers of English. They are using dictionaries or (unfortunately)
online translating sites to ask questions or respond. I'm not sure how many
of you are aware of this but even the simple English word "run" has over 50
meanings.

It would be nice if when any of us reply, we use simple phrases, avoid
idiomatic expressions, and give the person the benefit of the doubt. If you
want to encourage folks >from other countries (and hence possible sources of
assistance for you as well) to participate, it would be nice to give them
support and understanding (and perhaps some more appropriate English to use
in their inquiries).

Cape Town is the City
Cape Province is the province. Cape Colony is an older term, historical name
for the area. The borders probably were more limited than the later
province.
Other provinces until recently were Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
Johannesburg was in Transvaal.
Since apartheid died there are many areas with African names.

There are no Naturalizations for 1920-1921 at the
Archives in S.A. Does anyone know whether this
will in fact be put on the Archives.
I have been trying to get my grandparents and parents
Naturalization papers without sucess because of the
time period.

The text of my GGF's obit >from the newspaper contains the following
text. (note: He was an Orthodox Rabbi and a leader of the Scranton,
PA religious community for 22 years).

"Final tribute will be paid the deceased at 10 o'clock this morning
with services in the Synagogue. Rabbi B. Davidson, Wilkes-Barre and
Rabbi H. Guterman, this city, will have charge. They will be assisted
by Rev. H. Kran and Rev. J. Glasman, this city"

What is the meaning of the term "Rev"? I have seen this term used
before as in "Rev. J. Schwartz - Rabbi". Is Rev a term for a Rabbi, or
a reference to a non-jewish "Reverend"?

My GGM was married to an Orthodox Rabbi who was a pillar of the
Scranton , PA religious community for 22 years. He died in 1931. His
wife of 35+ years was killed in an auto accident 7 years earlier in
1924.

In looking for gravestones, we have found only the wife (so far). She
is in her own grave, which surprised me.

What is the Orthodox practice of burial in such a situation? Is there
a religious reason for an Orthodox Rabbi and a wife that pre-deceased
him to be burried separately?

Note, the wife is buried near her grandchilden who pre-deceased her
diying at <1year and age 8 respectively.

I recently found a branch of the family named WISEMAN who came >from the
Ukraine to Montreal and Quebec. Some of the WISEMAN family came to Chicago,
Los Angeles and possibly Florida. In disucssions they also advised that
there is a branck of the family in Milwaukee who spell their name WEISSMAN.

If anyone has information on WISEMAN/WEISSMAN, please contact me privately

Hello To All

I am hoping someone out there can help me. I am trying to trace the
wherabouts and death of my grandfathers mother(my great-grandmother).
She is listed on the 1930 census with her daughter. Her name was
spelled Reva, but it could also be spelled as ruth or rwya. On the
census for 1930 in new york she is listed in her mid 50's and widowed.

She was residing with her married daughter Rose Friedman & husband
Aaron. She was also listed as head of household. I have never been able
to find any trace of her in my searches. I believe they were living in
brooklyn. My grandfathers name is Milton FAIKES and his sister was
rose. His sister came to america in 1922, followed by the mother 1929.
Then my grandfather came here in 1932.

Any help and advice is appreciated.
