JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Finding a NYC Death Certificate of a Suicide
#general
Barbara Musikar
My great aunt died around 1921 in NYC on Houston St. in Manhattan. She
allegedly committed suicide. Her granddaughter does not know where she is buried and was surprised when I told her that her grandmother was not buried next to her grandfather at the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery in Staten Island, NY. from the discussion group archives, I learned that suicides were buried in aseparate section of the cemetery. When I spoke to the clerk at Baron de Hirsch, she told me that my great aunt was not buried at that cemetery. Not only can I not find her grave site, but I cannot find her death certificate as well. I have tried looking for the death certificate on the NYC Death indices for the appropriate time period as well as those Death indices posted on www.italiangen.org. I have been unable to locate her under her married name, CORN, original married name, KLEMPNER, and her maiden name, ROISMAN. I also looked in all five boroughs as well as outside of NYC in the NY State death indices. Someone suggested that I check the coroner's reports or newspapers for that time period. Does any one have any ideas where I can find the death certificate? Is it possible that the certificate was unindexed or does not exist? I am also looking for my great grandmother's death certificate which I cannot find as well, but thankfully she is buried in the same cemetery plot near my great grandfather in Union Fields Cemetery in Cypress Hills. She died of natural causes. I have visited several times in my youth and twice recently. In the cemetery register she is registered incorrectly as Sarah KLEINBERG when her name in fact was Sarah KLEMPNER. On her tombstone she is Sarah KLAMPNER. I looked her up under all three last names and I have yet to find her death certificate as well. She is also not listed on the NYS Death indices, NYC Death indices and on www.italiangen.org death indices. She died on May 30, 1917 so I also have a date to go by, but alas have not found her certificate. Any suggestions for locating her death certificate as well? TIA for your help in these matters. Re: Bayside Cemetery et al

In researching "Lerner" family
I've come across leads about where my paternal grandparents might be buried In contacting several New York cemeteries, including Bayside, I've not been able to glean information. typical responses I get are: "when did this person die?" "I'll get back to you." then I followup (perhaps a week or two later) or... they simply are asking (indirectly) for a donation to do the search, which evidently is or can be time consuming. It is difficult, I'll admit, >from 3,000 miles away to determine the best course of action. I'd appreciate feedback >from Jewishgenners todah Jacqueline Lerner-Aderman Tigard, OR

Hello:
After much searching, is it accurate to say that there is no Yizkor book for Porytsk? Would Porytsk appear in the book of a nearby town? I am looking for pictures or descriptions of both the Jewish and non-Jewish parts of the town. Any direction will be most appreciated. I plan to visit Zbaraz with my elderly parents in the second week of April
2006, looking up ancestral addresses and touring sites of Jewish interest. Would anyone who has previously been there be able to recommend guides/interpreters and suitable hotels (if not in Zbaraz itself then perhaps in Ternopil (Tarnopol)? Any other advice and guidance would be very welcome too. Thanks and regards Jeff Segal London Researching DORFGAJER, GRADEL, TEMPELDYNER, FRYDMAN (Lublin) SEGAL, SAPHIER (Zbaraz) STOLLAR, SHLOCHEVSKY (Poltava) Moderator Note: Please respond privately.

Births and midwives
#galicia
Gabe Kingsley <gabek1@...>
I first want to thank all who responded to my question about birth
registration in the name of the mother, or even the failure to register a birth. I received many informative and highly interesting responses that are quite enlightening about the time in which our ancestors lived, how alienated they felt >from surrounding society and the eternal importance of family. I wanted to pass along a curious anecdote about my grandfather Juda KUBERT's family >from Jezierzany. My grandfather's oldest son, my father's oldest brother, told me that the midwife who delivered him and his three younger brothers (all boys in the family) was the same woman who attended the five births of my grandfather and his four siblings in Jezierzany and Skala. All four of his children were born while they lived at two of different addresses on Rivington St. on the Lower-East Side of New York. Her name was Rebecca Rosenstock and she lived on Houston St. I have not yet taken time to search for her immigration record, but plan to do so.
