Dear all,

I have just been on a trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus and during that
trip I had the possibility to do a lot of successful researches in the State
Historical Archive in Latvia. As I can read Russian Cyrillic handscript I
had no problems finding and reading records relating to my family. Among the
records I went through were the 1893, 1902 and 1909 family lists >from Cesis
(Venden), Latvia. These lists is supposed to list all the Jewish inhabitants
in Cesis in those years, even though I have figured out some people are
missing. The oldest ones of those lists, the one >from 1893, I got a full
copy of and now after returning home I have translitterated and translated
that list so that others might find interesting information relating to
their relatives living in Cesis. So, here is the list:

Finally I would like to comment the list a bit:

As you see the first Jew in Cesis seems to have been Shmuel Lipmanov
ROZENTAL who came there >from Kurlyand in 1840. In most places where I have
read about the Jews in Cesis it's always said the first ones settled there
in the late 19th century. Now I know that several families came there in the
mid 19th century.

Most of the Jews in Cesis originated in todays Lithuania, mostly in the
northwestern area, back then part of Kovno guberniya. Many families seems to
have originated in one certain shtetl, Okmyany (Akmene).

Not all the Jews of Cesis lived in the town of Cesis, some lived in smaller
villages and other settlements in the district of Venden (Vendenskiy uyezd).
I haven't tried to identify those smaller villages or the volosts
(communities of several small villages), but perhaps some of you know the
names of the places today!

Surprisingly many of the Jews in Cesis worked as glaziers. I wonder what
business they worked in. Perhaps they came to Cesis just to work in a
certain glass industry?

whole, if one found 200 Gentiles and 200 Jews with a particular surname, that
would argue for its being far more common among Jews than among Gentiles!

In Hamburg, one encountered names like JACOBS, JACOB, and JACOBI quite
frequently, and still does. (Plenty of JACOBSENs up in Scandinavia
too!) MARX (>from Marcus) was also widespread among Gentiles; and then
there's BRAHMS, which is >from Abraham.

Since common Gentile surnames are unlikely to have died out, one might
even consult the on-line telephone directories in today's Germany.

The issue I am working on is as follows: I am doing a research project for
the authorities of the city of Munich concerning the history of the famous
Villa Waldberta in Feldafing at the Lake Starnberg near Munich. Today the
building is owned by the city of Munich and used as a residence for art
scholarship holders.

from 1945-1952 the villa was occupied by the US-Army for the purposes of the

Jewish Displaced-Persons-Camp in Feldafing.
The Archive of the Zentrum für Antisemitsimusforschung in Berlin keeps
copies of the "Leo-Schwarz-Papers" and "DP-Germany" in which I found several
lists with the names of many inhabitants of the Villa Waldberta. The
inhabitants mainly came >from Eastern Europe and Germany. I am very
interested in finding persons who are still alive and have lived in the
Villa during the described period or maybe any ancestors of persons that have
lived in the building and have died in the meantime. Maybe you know one of them?

I have listed the names, the place of birth and the date of birth below.
Sometimes it is very difficult to read the original text so I have marked it

Dear GerSIG Forum readers:
The issue I am working on is as follows: I am doing a research project for
the authorities of the city of Munich concerning the history of the famous
Villa Waldberta in Feldafing at the Lake Starnberg near Munich. Today the
building is owned by the city of Munich and used as a residence for art
scholarship holders.

from 1945-1952 the villa was occupied by the US-Army for the purposes of the

Jewish Displaced-Persons-Camp in Feldafing.
The Archive of the Zentrum für Antisemitsimusforschung in Berlin keeps
copies of the "Leo-Schwarz-Papers" and "DP-Germany" in which I found several
lists with the names of many inhabitants of the Villa Waldberta. The
inhabitants mainly came >from Eastern Europe and Germany. I am very
interested in finding persons who are still alive and have lived in the
Villa during the described period or maybe any ancestors of persons that have
lived in the building and have died in the meantime. Maybe you know one of them?

I have listed the names, the place of birth and the date of birth below.
Sometimes it is very difficult to read the original text so I have marked it
with a "?". It is then meant as "Sounds like".

I told him about the Jewishgen SIGs and he asked me to
post a question: he remembers that during Yuhrzeits [observances of the
anniversary of a death] in Germany people used to bless the berieved relatives
with: "Ad Bias Hagoel" which means in Hebrew: until the
coming of the redeemer. The meaning is that one wishes
that the family will not encounter another death until
the Messaiah will come.

He wonders whether anyone knows what is the origin of this Minhag.

published privately by his children in Israel in 2002.

He lived in Nurenberg, but he performed also in Bamberg, Furth and other cities.
I got interested in it because of my family member Shmuel Koenigsbuch who
had his Brit in 1920. Alexander Tachauer circumcized also the known designer
Otto Treumann and Henri Kissinger.

The importance of it is that one may see the Hebrew name of the boy.
