Burials in Israel #general

Israel P

Last Friday's weekly Hebrew newspaper Makor Rishon had an article in the
financial section (page 14) regarding a private, volunteer project to put
burial information online. (The paper itself has an online edition, but
this article doesn't seem to be there.) The project is called kadishanet
and their website is http://www.kadishanet.co.il/

It is all in Hebrew at this time, though they have plans in principle to
put information in foreign languages. The site includes much useful
information about burial procedures and customs, customs of mourning,
cemeteries in Israel and more. The person behind it is Yehoshua Yishai,
who once served as director general of the Tel-Aviv burial society.

(I spoke with him yesterday and he would be interested in cooperation
with JewishGen and JOWBR and I sent him the JOWVR URL. Joyce Field will
be in touch with him - or perhaps has already - so that is not the
purpose of this announcement.)

MODERATOR NOTE: Please send any suggestions for projects JewishGen might
undertake or join with to the JewishGen Support Desk, support@....
Because any such arrangements usually involve negotiations at fairly high
levels, we will generally not post these suggestions to the Discussion Group
until a project has been approved.

Re : Smyrna, Turkey #general

Hello,

You can find information about the research in Smyrna in the Infofile I
wrote some years ago, available on the Jewishgen website.

Several articles about this subject have been published in the review ETSI
(in French and English), devoted to the Sephardic History and Genealogy. You
should get an eye on the website of the society
www.geocities.com/Etsi-Sefarad You will find the list of the surnames and
places researched by our members, as well as the summaries of the previous
issues.

A part of the old records of the Jewish community has been destroyed, but
there are a lot of documents kept in Izmir, Israel or in other countries
(not only >from the Community).

There is not a register of the deaths or the burials, but a work in the
cemeteries has been done some years ago by Prof. Minna Rozen, >from the
Diaspora Institute at this time. Unfortunatly, this work is not available
for consultation.

If you have other precise queries, you can contact me privately.

Sincerely,
Laurence Abensur-Hazan (Mrs)

From: Sam Wolff <baalh@...>
Does anybody have any experience in conducting genealogical research in
Smyrna, Turkey? I was informed by a local Jewish person that the old records
were destroyed in a fire in 1900 and that I could search the cemetery but
that would be "time-consuming." Is there not a register of the deceased in
the >cemetery? Any tips would be welcome.

big surprise (KRYWKOWSKA not WASSERZUG) #general

I just learned that my great great grandfather and great great grand
mother's name was KRYWKOWSKA even though they went by the name of WASSERZUG
when they left Mlava Poland and went to Manchester UK. I got the birth
record of thier children including my great grandmother Sarah. Evidently,
my great great grandmother, Chany had the same maiden name. Maybe her
husband, Kalman took her name. Can thoughts about this woudl be
appreciated.

Dear Genners,
Looking for information about Adolf MALLERMAN(N) >from Ordara, Hungary,
born c.1890, emigrated to US in 1910. He lived in Pennsylvania. He
married Lottie HOCHHAUSER. They had 4 children:. According to the
passenger list his fathre's name was Emmanuel.
I believe he had a brother David who emigrated in 1920. He listed his
mother as Pepi and the address Bradoska 54, Slovacia
was given. Both Adolf and David moved to California. David died in 1959
and Adolf in 1967.

The Mallermans were cousins of the JAKOBOWICZ, probably through their
mother.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Verba, Vohlyn and Afula, Israel #general

I am a member of a synagogue in Afula, Israel that was built by survivors
from Verba, Vohlyn Gubernia (now in the Ukraine) in the years 1959-1960.
There is a big memorial wall to the Jews of Verba who were murdered in the
Holocaust. It is a small synagogue. We are now facing the fact that the
synagogue is in bad condition and we need to do a big renovation in order to
keep the building >from destruction.
I am hoping to find anyone who can help us to find Verba descendants or
anyone who is interested in helping us preserve this important synagogue and
that will help us to keep the Verba memory alive.
Please let me know if you have any ideas on how I can best go about
finding people who would be interested in helping us with this project and
if you may have come across any others looking for ancestors >from Verba or
towns nearby.
Thank you so much for anything that you can tell me.

Jacob LIPOFF from Grodno #general

Shelly Crane

Hello,

I am trying to find anyone who may be related to Jacob LIPOFF >from Grodno. I
found his 1917 World War I draft registration card on a commercial web site.
He was 23 years old at the time and living in NY. I do not know what his
surname would have been in Grodno, but could have been LIPOWICZ or something
phonetically similar. I believe Jacob was married to Esther and they had at
least one child named, Lloyd.

If you are related to Jacob LIPOFF, please email me privately. My
grandfather was Abram LIPOFF (LIPOWICZ) son of Yossel. Abram was born in Grajewo
Poland, but am trying to find out where his father Yossel came from. It could
have been Grodno.

Thank you,
