The other Jewish Named Towns #general

Re: JOSEPH: Newcastle: 1880s. #unitedkingdom

Tiare Maori <tiarem@...>

For others interested in Miriam Margolyes' note below about the Joseph's of
Newcastle, this family is the same family who previously lived in Sunderland
and whose sons emigrated to Australia. The wedding of Tobias and Amelia (not
Anne) Joseph occurred in 1837 (>from memory) and is the first recorded in the
marrriage register of the Sunderland Synagogue. Amelia was the daughter of
Philip Samuel, whose father Hart Samuel, was one of the earliest jewish
settlers in Sunderland.

I have seen a number of family trees where Tobias is shown as a brother of
Rabbi Jacob Joseph and Hyam Joseph, prominent figures in the Sunderland
community in the nineteenth century. However, Tobias (son of David) was >from
Margonin Poland whereas Jacob and Hyam (sons of Joseph) were born in
Amsterdam. There is a connection through marriage, however, as Jacob married
into the Samuel family, as did his nephews David and Lyonel (sons of Nissan
Joseph).

As a descendent of both the Joseph and Samuel families of Sunderland, I have
accummulated quite a lot of information on them over quite a number of
years. I am interested in hearing >from any others with an interest in these
families. Pls reply off-line to

Ann Jensen <annjen@...>

I am looking for information on Brenda Seligman, wife of Prof Charles
Gabriel Seligman, both of Oxford, prolific anthropologists. Charles was the
son of Hermann Seligman, a London wine merchant, and Olivia de Costa Mendes,
sephardic Jews. I believe the Seligmans came >from Rensh. I wondered if
anyone has written a book about these people. They are mentioned in academic
papers quite often but I am looking for family historical information

What is the largest place in Galicia (east or west) which might have been
spelled samekh-kof-aleph-heh-lamed?

It is definitely not Skole (4902 2331) and it should be much larger.

Name EIDEL #ukraine

Joan Rosen...

It is a woman's name. In the U.S. it has become Ada, or Ida, Adele, and
perhaps others. My g-grandmother was apparently known as Bubba Adel. Her
name on the ship manifest was Eide. The -l or -el is added as a diminutive.

Bronxville/ NYC #general

Joseph Hirschfield

I know there is a town in Westchester County, NY named Bronxville; however
I would like someone to let me know if there is also a section of New York
City called Bronxville. According to his NYC birth certificate for 1908 one
of my uncles was born at 457 Chester St. Bronxville. Since it is a NYC birth
certificate I have to believe that Chester St. is in NYC, but where is
Bronxville. I could not find Chester St. in a yahoo map search. I also
looked up Chester St. in the Morse list of changed street names and it was
not listed.
