Looking for sisters Sarah and Goldie RUBENSTEIN - Belarus -> New York City #belarus

Bruce E Rubenstein <bruce.rubenstein@...>

I am trying to find my great-grandfather's two sisters, Sarah and
Goldie and am hoping someone can help. Their maiden name was
RUBENSTEIN and they were born sometime between 1870 and 1880. Their
father's name was Jacob RUBENSTEIN. This RUBENSTEIN family originated
in Skidel (near Grodno), Belarus however the sisters very well may
have married in Europe and immigrated to the USA >from their husbands'
hometown(s). They both immigrated via Ellis Island sometime between
1900 and 1920. Unfortunately no one knows their married last names.

There are several clues however. Sarah's married name may have been a
variation of Cohen (Cohn, Kohen, Kohn). This is not certain. They were
both alive as of 1944 but likely passed away sometime between 1944 and
1960. They lived in New York City and I believe, based on the fact
that other RUBENSTEIN cousins settled in Brooklyn, that they too may
have settled in Brooklyn. Anecdotally, one or more of Sarah or
Goldie's sons appeared to look like Jeff Chandler, the actor.

Sarah and Goldie also may have had contact with their RUBENSTEIN
cousins in New York, one of whom had a bedding/quilt factory in
Brooklyn. The sisters had three brothers, Shmuel (aka Sam), Shimich
(aka Samuel), and my great-grandfather William (aka Simon) who settled
in both Dixon and Chicago, IL.

There are also several popular given names which repeat themselves in
the family: Rose, Sarah, Jacob, Harry, Joseph, and William. I would
expect that either or both Sarah and Goldie had a son by the name of
Jacob.

If any of this information sounds even remotely familiar, please
contact me privately at bruce.rubenstein@.... I am at a dead end
in this search. Thank you.

Relatives in Japanese POW camps #general

CharlesPottins

JewishGenners with relatives who were in Japanese POW camps during World War
II might be interested to visit sites recording their names, etc.
Last year I was able to find Mark Braham, a cousin of my mothers, recorded
at such a site: He was killed when the prison ship on which he was held was
bombed.

http://www.roll-of-honour.org.uk/

I had heard about him as a child. We knew he was captured at Singapore and
that he died in Japanese hands, but the family did not have accurate
information as to what happened to him.

Each of the names recorded is accompanied by a representation of a poppy
and the Changi cross, made by prisoners of war. Not realising the special
significance of that particular cross I was in touch with Ron Taylor,
creator of the site, to point out that Mark was Jewish, as I believe are
some of the other prisoners listed with him.

Jim has now inserted a note acknowledging that the prisoners were >from
different backgrounds, and he is also taking steps to insert a magen
david and poppy symbol.

see also http://www.fepow-community.org.uk/ which is a link to other pages
and sites. The sites cover British Commonwealth and Dutch prisoners, but I
believe there are similar sites for US prisoners.

Looking for mystery great grandmother #general

Jenni Hymoff Koeppel

Get >from New York and arrival information

1. My ggm was divorced >from her first husband, I think in the NY area and I
would like to know where I could obtain information >from her Get that might
be in an archive somewhere. She subsequently married my ggf and I assume
that event also ocurred in New York but I have no idea where in that city or
state. I already went to the Vital Records admin in Massachusetts and there
was no record of her marriages or death.

Where could I begin looking?

2. She arrived in the US as a minor, around 1879 >from Poland with some
other family members. I have not been able to find them on Castle Garden so
I think they might have entered another port (Boston, Philadelphia). We may
have finally located her grave in Woburn, MA, thanks to JCAM, but her life
is still a huge mystery.

3. The 1900 census states that she had a daughter named Rachel born in
August 1894. Nobody in the family has ever heard of that person. Any ideas
on how to find out who Rachel was?

I'd appreciate any advice in trying to locate these records. Thanks again
for all your help!

I know that one can find the place of burial by looking at the death
certificate. But how does one find the place of burial when a person dies in
