JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Yakov "Cohen" & Nechama-Rachel(nee Eisenthal) Cernivici/Dorohoi

Maly & Ofer Cohen
Shalom!
We are looking for information about Yakov "COHEN" >from Cernivici (Tschernowitz, Chernivitsi), Bukovina (now Ukraine); and for Nechama - Rachel, nee EISENTHAL (AISENTHAL) >from Dorohoi, Romania. Yakov was born in 1864 and had been living in Cernivici. He was a Cohen (we don't know if this is his "real" family name). Yakov's father was Yehudah. Yakov's brother was Shraga-Feiwel. Yakov was practiced as a Tora scribe (*Sofer Stam*). His nickname was "Yankele Soifer". Yakov had married and after ten years with no children he divorced and got marriage again with Nechama-Rachel >from Dorohoi. *This is the only information we have !* Nechama-Rachel (nee Eisenthal) was born in Dorohoi, Romania in about 1875. Nechama's father was Asher-Anshel, and her mother was a midwife. Nechama's brother was Michael-Mechel. She got marriage with Yakov, and when became pregnant they immigrated to Eretz-Israel. Nechama's mother, the midwife, followed her daughter and son-in-low to Eretz-Israel. The three had arrived to the Hauran (the new Jewish settlements) in 1896 and later settled in the Upper Galilee (Rosh-Pinna). Since then the family is has been living in Israel. We don't have any additional information for the family ancestors in Romania or in Bukovina. We found connections with some Eisenthal families >from Dorohoi, had immigrated to Israel after WW2, but couldn't find any real evidences for Yakov and Nechama. For Yakov's origin, it is very difficult to solve the mystery, as we don't know even his real family name! If any of the above names or "story" rings a bell for you, please let us know! We will appreciate any additional advice or information, which will lead to the above persons in Cernovici or Dorohoi. Many thanks in advance, Meir Cohen. Petach-Tikva, Israel.

Connecting to distant cousins
#general
ben-ari <yrcdi@...>
I've written on this before but I'll elaborate:
Several months ago I requested members of this group to put me in touch with Allen,a distant cousin of mine in Chicago. Within 2-3 days that cousin contacted me and he updated me on the details of his family for the family tree I coordinate. Within another few days I was contacted by George,a cousin of this cousin (>from "the other side") who was also preparing a family tree of "his side" and he wanted to include my whole family into his project. After ongoing correspondence with George (by the way these are all true first names) he put me on to Dan, an American couple who immigrated to Israel in the 80's and that their son had married one of my distant cousin (whose grandparents were in my tree), and he joined the loop of the family information which was being shared by so many members of the family who never knew each other before I asked members of this group to help me out with one cousin (Allen). As we say in hebrew "kol Hakavod to all of you". (If someone knows a real english translation of that please post). Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat, Israel

Let me clear something up:
I just saw the announcement of this talk at a Queens Library branch in NYC. I simply posted it as a public service. I have no interest in the area or knowledge of it beyond rudimentry. But for those of you who live in or near Queens you can check for the activities on their website http://www.queenslibrary.org. Queens has a very large Uzbeki Jewish community as well as Russian Jewish (not to mention large communities >from all over and every background) so they are always having something that might be of interest (culturally) to some of us. In response to saying where you live.....
I am Jewish and live in Salt Lake City. On the occasions when I have posted to the JG Digest, and said I live in Salt Lake, I got very few responses or people wrote and asked if I am doing Mormon research and suggest that I should use the FHL which I am fortunate to be able to do often. When I omit my location I get "tons" of responses with very helpful information. I no longer list my location. Hope Gordon

Cantor Israel Kupfer (Cooper)
#general
Stein Lewis
Israel KUPFER was a well known cantor in New York during the late
19th and early 20th centuries. He later changed the spelling of his name to Cooper. He was married to Fayge (Fanny) ENGLISZER, a sister of my ggf. I had been under the impression that he was >from Romania, but in the 1900 Census he reported that his place of birth and that of his parents was Russia. He and Fanny had seven surviving children, many of whom were either theatrical performers, agents or managers. He apparently died before the 1910 census, in which his children show his place of birth as Russian Poland. The low and behold in the 1920 census, his youngest son, Joseph states that his father was born in Romania and that his mother tongue was Romania. I have been unable to find a manifest showing the emigration of the family, which was either in 1883 or 1886 depending on which census one believes. I know that Israel Kupfer (COOPER) lived on Madison Street in 1900 and that he chanted at the First Romanian American Synagogue as well as at the Kalawarie Synagogue. He performed the marriage of my grandparents at the Congregation Sons of Israel at 13 - 15 Pike Street at which time he showed his residence to be 3 Rutgers Street. I have also found references to him in the "American Scene" which was published >from time to time in the early editions of Commentary. I also have found references to several of his sons in advertisements and obituaries in the New York Times. I am hoping that someone with a knowledge of the synagogues of the Lower East Side and of theatrical in period >from 1900 to 1940 can provide information about the family. I am most particularly interested in knowing if there is any information about Fanny Cooper. Lewis Stein Boynton Beach, FL
