Re: Rabinat a Matricni Urad V Podivin #general

Sally Goodman <sbgoody@...>

As always, many very generous Genners took the time to respond to my query
and I am very grateful.

For those who might be interested:
The language is Czech.
Rabinat is Office of a Rabbi
Matricni Urad v Podivin is Register Office of Vital Records in Podivin, a
town in the Czech Republic.

Various sites were suggested and >from them I learned about the town of
Podivin; I received translation sites and a site which guesses languages,
quite rapidly and quite accurately I might add.

Once again, thank you one and all.

Re: LOURIE #unitedkingdom

Graham,

Arthur Lourie was the Israel Ambassador to the Court of St James, and
to Canada at various times following the creation of the State. His
brother Norman, was the founder of Habonim SA at the beginning of the
thirties. I think these are the Louries to whom you are referring .

Hi everyone

Can anyone please tell me if there was at some time a
South African ambassador or diplomat to Israel with
the surname LOURIE or LURIE or LAURIER or some other
variation of this surname?

There's a story in our family that such person was
related to us. One branch of my father's family
(originating in Shavl and/ or Gordz in Lithuania) went
to South Africa in about 1895. One brother (Abraham
LAURIER) went to Paris, another brother (Isaac LEWIS)
went to England, and a third brother (name unknown)
went to S Africa.

Thank you in anticipation.

JewishGen welcomes the Danzig/Gdansk SIG #ciechanow #poland

Carol W. Skydell <cskydell@...>

Dear Friends,
JewishGen is extremely pleased to announce the formation of the JewishGen
Danzig/Gdansk Special Interest Group (SIG), which will focus specifically on
Danzig -- now Gdansk, Poland -- including its precursor communities of
Altschottland, Langfuhr, Mattenbuden, Weinberg, and Danzig in der
Breitgasse, as well as Tiegenhof/Nowy Dwor Gdanski. The unique history of
this community and the exceptional survival of its records presents
a marvelous
opportunity for collaborative genealogical research under the JewishGen
umbrella.

If you have research interests in this area we urge you to join the Danzig
mailing list by visiting < http://lyris.jewishgen.org/listmanager >. We
also invite you to visit the website at <
http://www.jewishgen.org/Danzig >. where you will see that contributions
of family histories, memoirs, photographs, maps, and other material of
interest will be welcomed..

Details about SIG projects aimed at making Danzig genealogical resources
more accessible, will be available on the website in the very near
future. Stay tuned!

Our thanks to Logan Joseph Kleinwaks , Coordinator of the SIG and Elsebeth
Paikin, Moderator of the mailing list for taking a leadership role in
proposing and organizing this entire effort to add to the programs and
projects JewishGen provides. .

We hope you are also excited and will join us as we embark on a new era of
Danzig Jewish genealogical research. We also encourage anyone who has
interests in this area and the historical records which will ultimately
reside on JewishGen to volunteer to help with projects. Some projects
may require funding, and we would appreciate your support in the form of
tax-deductible (in the U.S. and Canada) donations via the dedicated
JewishGen-erosity page
<

Please join us in welcoming the research opportunities which the JewishGen
Danzig/Gdansk SIG will provide to all with an interest.

TB Sanatoriums in New York State #general

Sandra and Donald Hirschhorn <sdh2381@...>

I suspect that one of my grandfathers had TB. He entered this country in
1921 and apparently died while in his 40's or early 50's sometime before
1930.

Since they lived in New York City and I have a photo of him in a bathrobe
taken outside I believe he may have gone to a TB hospital.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of such institutions and their
records?

Thank you.

The Institute Theresienstadt Initiative and the Austrian Documentary

Theresienstaedter Gedenkbuch - Oesterreichische Juedinnen und Juden in
Theresienstadt 1942 - 1945. (Memorial Book Theresienstadt - Austrian
Jewesses and Jews in Theresienstadt). Apart form various articles the
book contains three parts.
1. A list of all Jews deported >from Austria to Theresienstadt.
2. A list of Hungarian Jews deported >from Vienna and vicinity to
Theresienstadt in March and April of 1945. This list does not include
those Hungarians who were transferred to Theresienstadt >from other
camps during the last days of the war.
3. Those Austrian Jews who had emigrated to other European countries
and who were caught by the Germans and sent to Theresienstadt.
There is in existence for a number of years the Totenbuch
Theresienstadt (Deathbook Theresienstadt) which lists Austrian Jews
who perished either in Theresienstadt or who were sent on >from there
to the east. The new book lists all the deportees, including the
survivors.

LIEBOWSKY from Chile to Chicago #general

Martin Miller <millerm@...>

One of our BERGMAN(N) cousins >from Gross Kakschen in East Prussia married a
man by the name of LIEBOWSKY and had a son Mohr and a daughter Betty.

from what I have learned Mohr and his sister lived in Chile for a time and
then relocated to Chicago, IL. Mohr was a cartographer. He died in Chicago
and is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery near another cousin. Nothing more is
known about Betty or any family she may have had.

I've consulted every on-line resource and database that I can think of.
There is no citation to Mohr to be found in the obituary collections of the
Chicago newspaper. I believe I have tried every spelling possibility. I've
written to the cemetery, but have had no response.

Maybe these names are familiar to someone.

All the best for a good week,
