Re: Looking for the Rappaport's #general

The most important step you can take is to enter your surnames and towns
of interest in the JewishGen Family Finder.

http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ is where you start. You'll need to
register (it's free!), and you can be as anonymous as you want--just a
number, or a name, or your address as well. Once there, you can search
for others who are researching RAPPAPORT or SAMALION or Argentina or
Romania or wherever, and when you find them, you can email them
directly. Not only that, but *you* may have the key to someone else's
genealogical mystery, and JGFF is how they'll find you.

And thanks to D-M Soundex, you won't even have to be sure of the
spellings! So come and join the 200,000 folks already listed. JGFF, in
my opinion, is the single most powerful tool we have for research into
individual genealogies.

Hospital Records / Cause of Death - NYC #general

JACOB SUSAN JURISZ <suejurisz@...>

My husband's Aunt Lillie died in December 1953 in Brooklyn Jewish Hospital.
The death certificate gives no specific cause of death. A recent medical
issue has surfaced in the family which makes this a pertinent question, as
she was only 45 when she died.

I found an e-mail in the Discussion Group archives that stated: 1) Brooklyn
Jewish Hospital is now part of the Interfaith Medical Center and 2) medical
records in New York are only kept for 50 years. Is this a hard and fast
rule? (I am hoping that perhaps the hospital might be lagging behind in its
record retention work, and they would still have her record.)

To quote >from the death certificate:

". . .it was due to *natral causes* more fully described in the confidential
medical report filed with the Department of Health."

Should I call the hospital, or should I call the Department of Health?

I would like to hear >from anyone who has tried to obtain old NYC records,
whether successful or not. Thanks for your help!

NYC school records before 1910 #general

Jania Sommers <mail@...>

Was Morris High School on the Boston Road the only high school in the Bronx
(NY) in 1906?
How likely is it that a new immigrant, age 15, would have attended that
school? Is there any way to check public school records that far back for
the Bronx? Or even Manhattan, in case they stayed on the lower east side for
awhile. It is unclear to me when and which family members moved to the
Bronx. Were there night schools for immigrants and how would I research
that?
I am only interested in this material up to 1908 at the latest.
Thank you.

Searching: SOSENKO >from Nikolaev or Odessa, arrived USA 1906 and earlier,
earlier dates unknown.

Silverman, Marvin

My maternal grandparents came to the USA from
Stavishtshe in 1909.Can anyone tell me if the mill
from that time is still visable on Gedalke Lake? Are
there any photo's of it or the jewish sector of the
town >from that time period? Also cemeteries?

The family name is Shumsky, and I recently found out
that my greatgrandmother was murdered by the white
russians during a pogrom.

I would also like to know the name of the Russian
Count that had an estate in the gentile sector of
Stavishtshe, and is the estate still there?

Thank you,
Marvin Silverman

MOD NOTE: Remember to put family surnames in upper case letters.
It helps you by making your search stand out more sharply.

Above the sketchy map, click on "Strazi"(streets).

Cemetery in Cotopaxi, CO #general

Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>

I tried entering "Cotopaxi Jews >from Russia" in the most popular
seach engiine (Google) and came up with 379 hits. Checking out some
of the most promising articles reveals lots of information about the
immigration. Adding the word "cemetery" gave even more detailed
information which is too extensive to repeat here.

Janette Silverman asked:

A friend asked me to pose this question to the group - she travels
through Cotopaxi, CO several times a year and has visited a cemetery
there which houses what appears to be a mass grave and is labeled "Jews
from Russia" or something similar. Does anyone know what happened
here? Cotopaxi I think is near Leadville.

A great deal of WW2 military information is now online at the National
Archives and Records Administration (NARA) website. The page that lists
their WW2 records is at http://www.archives.gov/research/ww2, and a
quick glance shows that one of them is a casualty list. The databases
are all open to anyone and searchable in a variety of ways. Perhaps your
