In principle, I agree that, if someone submits a POT, the information
should be irrefutable, and not hearsay. At least 40% of my mother's
father's family were murdered. Most of the POTs claim they died in
Belzec. Some of my relatives have 5 POTs, each claiming they died in a
different place and time - does it really matter?

If ancestors were killed by Nazis, Poles, Ukranians, Lithuanians, or
any number of accomplices because they were Jewish - does it *really*
make a difference? They could have been killed by bombs, progroms,
Einsatzgruppen, ghettos, shot, burned, gassed, hunger, elements,
disease, etc.

As a matter of accuracy, it would be nice to have the documentation so
we could point to a piece of paper. Those, like me, that are obsessed
with finding paper, would feel more fulfilled.

It still does not change the reason the POTs were filled out.

my families shtetl many people were listed as having died in Treblinka,
but this very, very likely only an assumption by the person who listed
them, and not something for which there was any evidence.

RE Mystery Surnames - Thank you #general

Linda Shefler <linsilv@...>

I know that I haven't been able to get back to everyone individually who
responded to my request for help with the mystery surnames, so I want to
take this opportunity to give you all a group thank you and I will
definitely get back to you individually next week. I'm going out of town
early tomorrow for the weekend, hence the lack of time right now.
It was very interesting to see what sparked the interest of most people and
it was definitely the deSILVA/Toledo question!
I guess I wasn't clear enough regarding some of what I wrote; I know that
SILVERMAN and ZILBERMAN are the same name; I wrote the different variations
as that is how they are written on the headstones. The English version of
the name is spelled Silverman, while the Hebrew is spelled as Zilberman.
I did learn that it was no big deal to assume another identity after
arriving and before taking citizenship, that explains why Max Silverman's
naturalization papers list him as Max Silverman and not by the original
family name. I have the actual "petitions for name change" for other family
members in different branches, but that was some 20 years later.

I have much to discuss with several people, but in the meantime, *thank you all*
very much for your thoughts, suggestions, general information and
education. As always, it is very much appreciated.

Wishing everyone Shabbat shalom,

Adding to Hilary's answer to Todd's original message re the FBI:

When I requested copies of my Dad's Naturalization and Citizenship documents
from the Miami INS years ago, I was surprised to receive, in return - a
thick batch of papers.
In addition to the 1958 Petition for Naturalization and my Dad's Citizenship
papers, were copies of his original "green card" [Alien Registration] and a
U.S. Department of Justice Investigative Form!
Stamped at the bottom of the sheet were the words: "No investigation
conducted by FBI pertinent to your inquiry. This is a result of a request for
an FBI check only and is not to be considered as a clearance."
A box is checked: Reason for Request:"Naturalization".

I've never given this form a second thought - since there wasn't anything
negative about it!
Only relief on my part!

M-ko is an abbreviation for "Miestechko" - a shtetl (small town) in Russian
or Polish (Misteczko) .

Also, uj = ujezd, "district"

Thank you Alexander Sharon and Margaret Mikulska for your help.
