Maramaros-Sziget, yes; but now Sighet. Wiesel is supposed to be some

Sighet or Ma'ramarossziget's is the place Elie Wiesel is refering to.

The following information is >from Wikipedia:
Sighetu Marmaţiei, also spelled Sighetul Marmaţiei (Hungarian: Ma'ramarossziget, Ruthenian: Sihota), formely Sighet, is a city in Maramureş County near Iza river, in Romania.

The city has 44,185 inhabitants (14.8% Hungarians, 3.3% Ruthenians; 1992 census). Its named is derived >from Hungarian 'sziget', island.

Dear Genners,

I just came across a small article about this website, checked it out,
and I don't remember seeing it mentioned on this group. This is a
website called: "A Portion of the People: Three Hundred Years of Jewish
Life" which covers Jewish life in the American South. It's fun and
should be of interest to anyone who has family >from that area. Enjoy!

personal research needs.

Thank you all for the great help I always get here.
This time I am trying to find somebody that is not a

SIEGEL they had a daughter they called Butzie. In 1957
they lived in Israel in Bat Galim, a few years later
they moved to Germany. Butzie should be around the 50
years now. They may have returned to Israel. Any info

Small talk leads to big talk #general

A few days ago, I received an email communication >from an eighty-six year
old man in London, whose father was born in Skalat. He and his younger
brother are looking for information about their family and the brother
was particularly interested in the Skalat connections of the Husiatyner
Rebbe, whose yearly visits to Skalat were described by Tonka Pikholz in
the Skalat yizkor book. This younger brother is a Husiatyn hassid, hence
the interest.

I answered at some length, as best I could (mostly >from JRI-Poland, since
he seemed to have been struggling with the search there). In closing,
since my wife's father, grandfather and great-grandfather ran a well-
known kosher restaurant in London many years ago, I asked if he knew the
restaurant. Small talk. I asked further - quite as an afterthought, and
without mentioning any given names or dates - if he knew any of my mother-
in-law's BAUM family in London. Very small talk.

The next day, he repiled with more Skalat and Husiatyn comments and
questions and mentioned that he vaguely remembered the restaurant. But
was once gabbai at the shul of Rav Lippa Baum and maintained contact with
his family, including his widow. well, I almost fell off my chair.
Lippa Baum's father lived near my mother-in-law's family and she
suspected they were related, but never actually asked. In fact, we had
considered that R Lippa's father was the reason my wife's grandfather
went to London (when he left Hungary), rather than say New York.

So my new Skalat friend is going to make inquiries for me among the
family and maybe we can move our Baum research ahead. All that >from a
throwaway line I stuck into a letter about something else entirely.

Another version of leaving no stone unturned.

Levi/Levy/Caro---Clechchovia???? #general

Jslevey@...

Hi all,

I posted recently about searching for my roots on my father's side of the
family. I was able to find a lot in the British censuses. My great grandparents
were born in England. On my grgrandmother's line it looks like I may be able
to trace back to my grtgrtgrtgrtgrandmother in England in the 1780's. I'll
post the details in a separate post soon.

On my grtgrandfather's side, I found that his mother and her parents (my
grtgrtgrandmother and my grtgrtgrtgrandparents) had the name Caro and are listed
in one census as having been born in Clechchovia and another census says Deu
Poland. I either find nothing on Shtetlfinder or over 1000 possible matches
if I don't narrow it to Poland. Since I see a reference to Poland in one
census, I'm assuming they were >from Poland.

Anyone have any ideas or info as to where Clechchovia could be or what "Deu,
Poland" means?

Thanks for whatever anyone is able to suggest.
