JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Dr. Eleanora Bergman to speak at JRI-Poland Luncheon Aug. 13
#poland
JRI-Poland is delighted to announce that Dr. Eleanora
Bergman, Vice Director of the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI) in Warsaw, will speak at the JRI-Poland luncheon at the IAJGS conference in New York. The luncheon will take place at noon on Sunday, August 13. Deadline to sign up for the luncheon is this Friday, August 4. For those of you who have registered but have not yet signed up for the luncheon, go to the conference website at www.jgsny2006.org then click on "Update Registration" and add the luncheon. Dr. Bergman will speak on the project to index the more than 230,000 Survivor Cards at the JHI. These cards were filled out immediately following World War II by Jews who were in Poland and registered with the various Jewish communal organizations then functioning in Poland. The cards includes town of birth, parents names and other valuable information. We had earlier announced that Yale Reisner and Anna Przybyszewska Drozd of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project at the Jewish Historical Institute would be speaking at our luncheon, but they recently announced they will not be coming to the conference. We look forward to seeing you at the luncheon on August 13. Stanley Diamond, Executive Director, Jewish Records Indexing-Poland

Expulsion of Jews from Galician front lines to Russia 1915
#general
Barb & Howard
The Rohatyn Yiskor book alludes to more than 500 local Jewish males, as
being rounded up, arrested, taken away suspected German spies; they were suddenly expelled by the Russians >from the forthcoming World War One front lines battle area in 1915. It is said that more than 200 Rohatyner men died on the roads of Russia during this period of expulsion until the survivors began to return to their home area in Galicia in 1917 & 1918. The Rohatyners were force marched almost 300 miles >from Rohatyn to Kiev; they were then put on railway wagons and taken to a place called Chembar in Penza Provence. They were kept in Chembar for several months before being sent back as far as Tarnopol, which was still then under Russian control. They languished in Tarnopol on their own recognizance. Every man had to provide for himself in those difficult times for more than a year until sometime after the German forces arrived. Evidently this expulsion occurred all along the full length of the German/Russian battle lines >from Lithuania to Bessarabia, and not just in Galicia. Can anyone advise where to seek more details about this little reported Jewish Galician expulsion, and those who perished during this episode? Thus far I have only been able to uncover scant expulsion information. Here in the Western World the bulk of the available WWI reporting was concentrated on the Western Front. Upcoming Election Procedures
#lithuania
Eden Joachim <esjoachim@...>
LitvakSIG will be holding an election for the Board of Directors at its
annual meeting on Monday, August 14, 2006 at the 26th IAJGS Conference in New York City. At that time, all LitvakSIG members in good standing will be given a ballot on which to cast their votes. As has been explained previously, dues may be paid now to the Membership Chair or at the annual meeting. If you have not paid your dues yet, want to vote and will be at the meeting, please mail your checks now so as not to take up a lot of time at the meeting, which has a full agenda. If mailing your dues, please do so by August 5, 2006 to allow them to reach the Membership Chair in time to be received and recorded. All candidates for the LitvakSIG board must be dues paying members of the organization, in good standing. Nominations are now being accepted by email to esjoachim@.... Please submit all nominations to me no later than Friday, August 11, 2006, 6P.M. (Eastern Time). Nominations will also be accepted >from the floor at the annual meeting. Nominations >from the floor should be limited to candidates present at the meeting, so the nominee can indicate acceptance. I will compile the list of nominees, which will be presented on the ballot in alphabetical order by surname, along with blank spaces for any nominations presented >from the floor. This list of nominees will also be published on the Discussion List which will enable you to learn about the candidates. Any nominees present at the annual meeting will be given the opportunity to speak for one (1) minute - about 100 words. You may tell of your vision for LitvakSIG and why you seek office. Any nominees who will not be present may submit a statement of no more than 100 words to be read at the meeting. There will not be any nominating or acceptance speeches. This election is being conducted under the provisions of the original LitvakSIG bylaws, which require at least five (5) board members. You may vote for as few or as many candidates as you choose. In order to be elected, a candidate must receive a majority (50 percent plus one) of the votes cast. In the event that fewer than five (5) candidates are elected, in accordance with the bylaws, candidates with the next largest number of votes will be deemed elected to reach the necessary number of five (5) Board members. Amendments to the LitvakSIG bylaws may also be submitted to me for voting at the annual meeting. The bylaws state: Amendments may be acted upon at any meeting of LitvakSIG, Inc., provided that the amendment will have been circulated at least ten (10) days in advance of the meeting. Kindly submit any proposed amendments to me no later than Thursday, August 3, 2006, 6P.M. (Eastern Time) in order for them to be published on the discussion list by 12 P.M. of that day. Any proposed amendments to the bylaws will also appear on the ballot to be distributed to membership at the annual meeting. Questions, comments and kvetching may be addressed to me. However, it's important to know that this phenomenon of vicious antisemitism became a feature of European Jewish life only with the advent of the middle ages and the Crusades. (The ancient Roman persecutions were not due to anti-semitism as such, but simply a punishment for their defiance of Roman rule.) It was hardly known prior to medieval times (largely because of the far greater tolerance of Jews during the heyday slam, which was the western world's most flourishing culture prior to the middle ages). I mention this because most of us were misinformed in Hebrew school that persecution of the Jews had been ongoing pretty much everywhere for 2,000 years ever since the advent of Christianity. This "lachrymose theory of Jewish history" does not reflect historical truth. But the period of the Crusades did give a boost to those who wanted to scapegoat the Jews for religious or other reasons -- and the phenomenon has persisted ever since. Judith Romney Wegner

http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=8249 Last year I discovered the burial site of my grandmother in Union Fields Cemetery in Queens, NY. I was quite surprised at the quality of the stone because I believe my grandparents are not wealthy (poor, perhaps, is the word). I would appreciate if someone would translate the text on the stone. I know that the first four lines are an acrostic spelling Feiga but what does the text mean? Also, if any of this information rings a bell, perhaps you could contact me. Please reply directly to : rwwschorr@... My grandmother was Fanny Schor (or Schorr). Hebrew name, Feiga. Her maiden name was Wolfman, daughter of Ephraim and Deborah.
