two/three burials togethers in same gravesite #general

Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>

Dear Genners:
Perhaps recent references to a father and son being buried together
in the same gravesite were seen as "rare", but certainly such
multiple burials existed (maybe just not for father and son.) I can
provide a photo of a headstone for my grandmother's two young sisters
and one brother -- they all succumbed to diphtheria in NYC in 1893
and are buried together under one headstone with their three names.

Re: JRI-Poland Project -Missing Films #galicia

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

Gesher Galicia is very excited about Mark Halpern's announcement of the new
JRI-Poland Area Shtetl CO-OP project to index the valuable collection of LDS
microfilms of Jewish records >from the L'viv archive.

For those of you who have viewed the entire list of these microfilms on the
FHL website and compared it to the inventory as detailed on Miriam Weiner's
website and on the Gesher Galicia website (composed by Alex Dunai, entitled:
Jewish Records in the Lviv Archive) you should know that three record books,
which should have been at these archives, are currently missing or
unavailable, and, therefore, unfilmed. These are:

Kaminka Strumilova - Marriages - 1789-1861
L’viv - Marriages - 1835-1842
Khystynopol -Marraiges - 1933

"Missing" means that they could not be found during the LDS microfilming
process. It is possible that these are gone forever (possibly stolen in
light of the discovery of thefts at the archive last year) or simply
mis-filed or misplaced, and may eventually yet be located. If anything more
is learned about these particular books, information will be posted on the
list.

In the meantime, please consider volunteering for this important indexing
project by contacting Mark Halpern at willie46@comcast.net or Hadassah
Lipsius at kesher@lipsiusgroup.com.

Vital Records That Need A Home - Not My Family - RAKOFF - STEINER - FRIEDMAN - KONIG #general

sacredsisters3@aol.com <sacredsisters3@...>

Hello

I have some vital records that I ordered which turned out not to be my
family that i was looking for, even though the names were the same. I
would like to give these records to actual descendants. I do not wnat
to throw them away, since i paid for them it would be like throwing
money in the trash and who wants to do that.

I have a death record >from New York on a Isadore Rakoff who died in
Manhattan on 1/30/1971. At first I had ordered this record because I
thought I was on the right track and that this person was my
great-grandfathers brother. It wasn't until later after i had ordered
other records and talked to a relative that i found out i had the wrong
guy. My guy actually died in 1938 and i have those records now. I also
have a marriage record for this Isadore Rakoff who was married to a
Rose Sachs. I also have printouts of the census records which list them
as having three kids Adele, Alan, & Shirley.

I also have obits that i printed out form the New York Times, that
pertain to this Isadore Rakoff and his siblings. There is even an obit
on his father who was Jacob Rakoff. I am hoping to give these to the
rightfull owner.

I also have a birth record for an Alwin Steiner Born in September of
1896, to parents Louis & Flora Steiner. Who I was looking for
originally was a birth record for an Erwin Steiner, so i took a shot at
ordering the record thinking they made a typo with his name, but i was
wrong again. I also have a copy of a death record on a Herman Rakoff
who died in Bridgeport, Ct in 1928. His father was listed as Beyer
Rakoff.

I also have marriage records on an Aaron Friedman who married a Fannie
Tiger in Brooklyn in June Of 1929. Am arriage record for a Nathan
Konig/kanig who married Sadie Maurer in Manhattan on 1/20/1913.

I want all these records to find new homes, so please contact me if
they are your ancestors.

Elmira, New York #general

Steve Pickoltz

Is anyone going to Montefiore cemetery which is near Elmira, New York.
All three people I am seeking, died in Elmira.

I would like to get some tomb stone pictures and or any other information
that the cemetery may have in it's records.

The people in question are Benjamin Chaitt- died May 9, 1984,
his wife, Sadie Tersuhow Chaitt- b April 19, 1903, d Aug. 26, 1984.
Also Sadie's sister, Dorothy Tersuhow, last name could be Canter (Kanter)
or Oswell. She was married a number of times, so I am not sure what
her last name is. She was born Dec. 30, 1912 and died June 17, 1957.

If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Family STERN, BREINER, BONDY from Vienna #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Max Stern is looking for any descendants of his STERN family >from Neu Bistritz
[Bohemia/Czech Republic]; BONDY >from Trebitsch/Trebic [Moravia/Czech Republic];
BREINER >from Deutsch Kreuz [Transylvania/Romania], who all lived in Vienna and
tragically died in the holocaust.

There are various approaches Max can take. Hopefully, this posting will bring
him a *living link*, but with names like STERN and BONDY that is not so likely.
BREINER is rather more distinctive - so here are my suggestions:

1. Register the names/places on the JGFF [Max has already done this!] and do
not forget to check the JGFF for additions. People sometimes do not contact
you.

2. Join the Austria-Czech SIG and repost this message with more details, inc.
dates of birth. We have over 700 members >from this area and you therefore have
a greater chance of finding a connection:
http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech/

3. Post on the Romanian and also the Hungarian SIG - as I assume that these
BREINER belonged to the Hungarian-speaking population of Transylvania.

4. Careful research in Vienna in the archives often can give important leads to
lost family connections. Once posted on our Austria-Czech SIG, I will be happy
to expand on how to proceed, via constructing a detailed family tree using
household registration documents [Meldezettel]; asset files; probate records;
cemetery and holocaust databases etc.

As there are only six asset files for BREINER they could give leads to this
family: Breiner Gertrud & Felix dob 8 March 1913 and 22 Jan 1908 resp.
Breiner Hans dob 30 Oct 1906; Breiner Max dob 18 Sept 1883; Breiner Isidor 8 Aug 1873

5. Investigating internet sources: I have come across this article which may be
a link: http://www2.ku.edu/~maxkade/MKC2004a.pdf

Egon BREINER who died in Los Angeles in 2000 was born in Vienna in 1910 to a
Hungarian father and German-speaking Bohemian mother. The article is written by
his son Peter BREINER >from the State University of NY, Albany.

6. Check the Yad vashem database: Here is a possible link but STERN is a very
common name, so we must know more:
Last Name: KATZ; First Name: Else; Date of Birth: 15/08/1883
Maiden Name: STERN; Father's First Name: Wilhelm
Mother's First Name: Fanny
Place of Birth: Neu Bistritz, Jindrichuv Hradec, Bohemia,{Czech Rep]
Married to Viktor
Submitted by her daughter: Franziska WINTERSTEIN on 1 Jan 1992 >from Prague
Franziska who may still be alive [in her 90s], or who may have offspring also
submitted a POT for her brother Walter.

There are two BREINER POTs linked to Vienna with names and addresses.

I generally have had the greatest success by researching the Vienna sources but
it needs a lot of perseverance.
