Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Nathalie Ried >from Marseilles, France writes: " ... I'm a descendant of Shmuel
ben Arye Leyb DAICHES, one of the dayanim of Vilnius (died in 1825). I have
found the names of his father and grandfather (Eliahu Arkis (Aaron) DAICHES
from Krakow) in the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia but I have no other information.
If any of you happens to have some data on Eliahu Arkis DAICHES (born between
1710 and 1730 I suppose in Krakow) or any useful genealogical data about the
Krakow DAICHES line in the 18th century, I would be very grateful"

Nathalie - I hope you find this useful information - it concerns the famous
David DAICHES critic, historian, writer, September 2 1912- July 15 2005

http://books.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,11617,1531640,00.htmlD

Many will enjoy reading this interesting obituary about a brilliant man
dsecended >from a long line of rabbinical scholars >from Lithuania. I suspect
they are also descendants of the Krakow DAICHES.

However here is the "jewel in the crown" - you will find DAICHES early
genealogy here ***but*** it can only be found if you selectively google - [see
footnote]

http://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow/Families/Deiches.html

Please note the variant spellings of DAICHES; namely DEYCHES c 1763 and before
that DEICHES 1805-07; and then DAICHES in the UK and probably other variants
elsewhere.

Celia Male [U.K.]

Foontnote: Methodology of finding the David DAICHES obituary and URL for early
DAICHES genealogy in Krakow: General knowledge; head stuffed full of useless
and useful facts; research experience in science since I was 18; lateral
thinking. This footnote added *only* because people constantly ask me how I
find things!

GANZE and mother Katerina FISHLOVA. I found an old document that her name
before married my grandfather Ervin GUTH in 1919 was GLUCKOVA??.

Trying to find if she was married ??? Gabriela lived as she married in Dobris
where my mother Hana GUTH was born in 31/07/1920 moved to "PRAHA XIII"
placackeho 85/262 at 1926.

I assume she had 3 brothers: Leo, Max, Ludvig GANZ and 2 sisters Aduolfinae,
Viera. Gabriela GUTH was forced to leave Prague to Terezin 23/07/1942 and
murdered 04/08/1942 in "Maly Trostinec"

There are excellent Jewish birth/marriage/death records in Prague. There are
also excellent genealogists who work there. The best place to get more data on
this, is to post your message on the Austria-Czech SIG:
http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech/

where we now have nearly 900 keen members who will be willing to help and
advise you. You may even find someone who knew whether your grandmother had a
first husband. The date of her marriage to your grandfather in 1919, when she
was already 35, suggests that she may well have had a previous marriage and
that her first husband could have been a WW1 casualty. That is another line of
enquiry which could be followed. Also people did divorce in those days and if
so, Gabriela's first husband may also have remarried.

GLUCK is a very common but there is a good potential fit on Yad vashem:
http://www.yadvashem.org/ found with an advanced search - Jeno GLUCK dob 1880 -
a merchant - married to Fani nee ASHER - lived in Praha, Czechoslovakia. His
son lived in Israel and wrote his POT - so another line of enquiry I would
follow.

We can also see Gabriela GUTH [as GUTHOVA] on Yad Vashem, but she does not have
a POT. Please note [and this is a handy research hint for *all* researchers, I
have discovered >from experience] that you may only find some victims' names if
you enter the correct suffix - this was so in the case of Gabriela.

We remember both Gabriela GUTH and Jeno GLUCK here today.

my viewmate file. Must be Polish or Russian, I reckon. This is the back

Please also check a website like www.joodsmonument.nl for Meppel (a

Meppel being a "stad" but not a "city".

Meppel is a town because it situated in Europe and has no cathedral.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meppel> is wrong.
Meppel, first mentioned in 1041, got "Stadsrechten" in 1809.
However, translating "stadsrechten" to "city rights" is farfetched.

=============================

Of the 250 Meppel Jews 232 were murdered in WWII.

<http://www.joodsmonument.nl/searchresult.php?q_mm=meppel&lang=en>
counts 477 murderd Jews having some connection with Meppel.

Dear list,

I realize this is now off-post, and I plan on un-subbing as I have no
reason to look in Czechoslovakia anymore, but I thought I would let
those of you who have helped with my "CZ" question know the "rest of
the story" on Julius Landauer, who I had last found in the
Concentration Camp at Balboa, Canal Zone in 1942. It looks as
thought he survived as I have found his death notice in the
California Death Index, having died 18 May 1982 at the ripe old age
of 90! He died in San Francisco, CA, which may explain why his
effects were found in the Holocaust Center of Northern California.

Thank you for your indulgence,
