Re: The Jewish Cemetery at Baden bei Wien {was Jewish Community of Baden} Part 1 #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

We welcome the Judische Gemeinde, Baden bei Wien, represented by their
President Thomas Scharf [umlaut] to our SIG which was founded in the 1990s:

http://www.juedischegemeinde.at/schaerf.htm
http://www.juedischegemeinde.at/Jued.Leben.Baden.htm

I think Mr Schaerf will soon see that we are a very serious group of people
whose interest lies in furthering knowledge [especially *genealogical*] of the
decimated Jewish communities in Austria, Bohemia, Moravia and with links to
other areas of the Habsburg Empire. Anything we can do *now* to fulfil these
aims is most important, as the links are fast disappearing and the younger
generation may no longer be able to do the work.

Before I reply in further detail, here is an example of how this new website
has already made one dispersed family very happy: Irene Newhouse in Hawaii
noticed a name on the new website and asked me to help. Indeed, it was the
relative she had been looking for for many years. She had no idea she was
buried in Baden. The news was then passed on to surviving relatives in England
and Sweden! This is how our superhighway works.

We know about the Jewish Community in Baden and through the incomplete database
of burials held by the IKG, we can get some data on the burials. However most
of us have never been to the cemetery in Baden and have never seen close-ups of
the headstones. These are of great interest to genealogists and historians of
the lost Jewish communities.

I am lucky enough to have the book called "Die Juden Von Baden und ihr
Friedhof" - also I speak German. Many of our members do not. Unfortunately I
cannot read the Hebrew inscriptions and I now have a small keen team trying to
match up the Hebrew names on the headstones with the photographs. Any help
you can give us will be very welcome. Through this, Tomer Brunner in Israel,
one of our youngest members, saw for the first time the grave of his ancestor,
the famous Rabbi Wilhelm REICH! He was thrilled. Charlie and Ronnie Roberts
have more data on Adolf AUFRICHTIG and you may have seen Ronnie's enthusiastic
response. Perhaps the Baden Community is not aware of the existence of the
Brunner/REICH and the Roberts/AUFRICHTIG links. These types of links are
extremely important in maintaining a dispersed community.

I hope we will all work closely and harmoniously together in future.

Part 2 follows.

Dear Members

I am trying to locate relatives / descendants of Juliane SCHOENFELD born
OESTERREICHER in Lackenbach, Austria 11th of April 1898.
Juliane and her husband Josef SCHOENFELD were refugees in Lyon, France
in 1940 (coming >from Anvers) where they applied for asylum and were waiting
for an affidavit to emigrate in the USA .
In 1942 they were sent to Aiguebelette in the Department of Savoie
(France) by the French administration in forced residency.
In October 1942 they were reported missing by the French police and I
'found' them as refugees in Geneva, Switzerland.
In 1946 they enter the US in New York joining Juliane's brother David
OESTERREICHER who was living at that time Bergen Avenue in Jersey City.
I also found out that Juliane died in 1996 in Jerusalem at the age of
98.

If anyone is familiar with this family or the places I mention in Europe
could you get in touch with me.
The effort to locate the SCHOENFELD family is done under the project
'ordinary exile' which is quiet active.

This is a one time mention of non profit and no fee organisation

(The German and the French version are the most updated parts, but the
search page in English is quiet efficient)

Congradulations Jerry, I know that was exciting.

from. We think Shargord They were GREENBERG'S on one
manifest and GREENBLATT on another. So i don't know
exactly what their name was either. Are there any
unknown siblings to those you are reseaching? My
GGF's name was Gidalia Duvid. George David.

Could that have been Lyova, which is a familiar form of Lev?

Kenya- Nairobi Hebrew Congregation #general

Saul Issroff <saul@...>

People looking for information on the Jewish community in Kenya,
East Africa will find this website useful. Randy Fleitman
*****, a member of the Executive Council and the Nairobi Hebrew
Congregation (NHC) website administrator has advised that
the website is www.nhc.co.ke .

It is an interesting community. I am told that Nairobi, Gaberones
(Botswana), Plettenberg Bay and Umhlanga Rocks are the only Jewish
communities in Africa that are still slowly growing!

Looking at the site I see a note about the internment camp (British) at
Gilgil. Does anyone have a list of those who were interned there? I
believe Menachem Begin and Jabotinsky were internees at one time, but I
may have this incorrect.

1900 NYC Census- 13 1/2 Delancy Street #general

BRENERDA@...

Need some help in locating the household(s) living at 13 1/2 Delancy Street
in the New York City census of 1900. Arriving passengers Raffael and Rebecca
Wolkenstein on the L'Aquitaine >from Harve on 14 July 1901, listed their
"aunt" at that address as their contact.

Can anyone convert that address to a District in Manhattan (I believe it is
Manhattan).

By 1910 Raffael (now Ralph) and family were living on Barthgate Avenue in
the Bronx indexed in major site as WALKENSTEIN. In 1920, they are on Belmont
Avenue in the Bronx indexed as WALLENSTEIN.

Bonus quesiton: By the 1930 census, Ralph (again as Raffael) and wife (now
Marie or Mary) with children Lillian born about 1902 and Lewis (Louis) born
about 1904. Father and son are both builders. Trying to find out more about
Lillian and Lewis. Living in Bronx Dist 189.

Thank you!

Re: Hebrew equivalent for the name "Peter" #general

Bev <bevshul@...>

I am Peter and also Pesach. But I have a nephew, Paul, whose Jewish name
is Pesach. His father had asked the local rabbi what the Jewish
name for Paul would be and he said Pesach
The first Simon in the bible was the first-born of the *12* sons of
Jacob. As someone mentioned above, Saint Peter was originally Simon
bar Jonah, the first and preeminent of the *12* apostles. (No, not a
coincidence). Through the second instance, Shimon = Peter in
English. St. Paul was Saul of Tarsus, therefore Shaul = Paul.

In real life people often just choose the first letter of the Hebrew
name and match it up to some name in English or vice versa. That's
how Pessach and Pinchas and Peretz become Peter. Or Paul.

BOOK or BUCH? #general

Jules Levin

My gm's maiden name was always said to be BOOK, and through her I am
related to Books in Baltimore. My cousin there
found my gm's brother's census data, year of arrival in the US, etc.,
but the only name anyone knows is Book. For a long time
I assumed it was changed >from BUCH, but I have come to realize that
occasionally one encounters surnames that sound as though they have
been anglicized, but in fact were such in the old country, e.g.,
Gordon, Boot. So my first question is,
has anyone heard of a name sounding like Book (Buk...) in Eastern
Europe (actually they came >from Lithuania). Please don't bother
pointing out that it could have been shortened >from Bukovsky or
something like an infinite number of other, longer,
names. Unfortunately I am well aware of this possibility.
