Here are some points I wish to make following Mr Schaeffer's initial posting
which, hopefully will help us all to understand more about the Jewish cemetery
in Baden-bei-Wien and also the Baden Jewish Community to understand our aims.


1. Discrepancy in burial numbers: Unfortunately, the complete 2,200-name
database of burials we heard about today is not online so there is little
opportunity for wide-ranging research. Also we now know that the IKG database
is incomplete for Baden - that is a great shame. The book, I referred to above,
lists *only* 1,161 graves. Some have multi-occupancy, so I counted about 111
other "listed occupants of graves", which brings us to just over 1,270 burials.
Now we are missing 1,000 *vital* names who deserve to be remembered, openly-
listed, researched and re-linked to their dispersed families. I wonder who they
are - how can we find out and why are they not listed in the book I have?

2. Complete databases online and their importance: It is only when you have a
complete online database, see the graves with inscriptions inc. name, father's
name, maiden names, location, dates etc that you see long-lost family links
which are vital to us and which even the Jewish Community in Baden may not be
aware of. I do hope these names can all be incorporated in a complete database
for all of us and future generations.

3. How many headstones survive in Baden?: As there are only approx. 600
headstone photographs, I presume many have disintegrated and/or disappeared.
Perhaps we can now have an official number >from Mr Schaeffer of the known
number of existing headstones. All this is vital for our research. Time is
running out.

4. Burials of people >from miscellaneous places: There are people buried in
Baden >from many other places as Baden was a spa, a popular place for wealthy to
have houses, a magnet for visitors, a health resort and there was a sanatorium
[Alland] nearby. Here are just some places of origin I found:

Austria: Vienna, Bad Voslau, Berndorf, Eisenstadt, Gainfarm, Gmund, Krems,
Hohenau, Mattersdorf, Piesting, Portschach, Tattendorf, Traiskirchen;

Slovakia: Pressburg;

5. Example of scope for targetted research: I do hope now we have made contact
you will also be able to help trace the parents and the grave of the parents of
a former Baden resident Karl KOHN [see footnote]. I traced him after a long
trail and one single clue [for his granddaughter Julie Curran now in the USA]
to Australia via Shanghai where he died aged over 90. I know this will be of
great importance to her. This is the sort of work we can do when we have many
facilities on the internet. I can now see KOHN headstones for the first time
and I suspect one or two are >from this Karl KOHN family.

6. I also found for James Werner, Bordeaux, a member of our SIG, that his
gtgtgt grandfather, Abraham WEINMANN is buried in Baden-bei-Wien with his wife
Babette. Is it possible to see a photograph of their graves or have they been
destroyed? Perhaps the names are only in Hebrew and we have not yet identified
them.

Abraham died 27 Dec.1896 aged 82 in 1885 agd 82. He was a leader of the Baden
Jewish Community and in 1881-1893 President of the Chevra Kadisha. Babette died
12 March 1899, aged 83. The grave of Abraham is along the perimeter wall with
all the leading members of the Baden community - ie akin to an honour grave.

7. Finally, grateful thanks to Traude Triebel and her technical assistant
Gerhard Reumann who have done a magnificent job at their own expense in
producing this website. Traude of course obtained the keys for entry to the
cemetery officially after phoning you. The website has now attracted more than
550 hits in only five days. I suspect that because of this website you will now
get more visitors and hopefully more donations for the upkeep of the cemetery
and the Baden Community will benefit.

I have as yet no personal connection to the Jewish Community of Baden-bei-Wien,
but through intensive research I might yet find one.

Footnote: Karl KOHN; all I knew about him was his name and a six digit number.
I discovered it was the asset file number with one digit too many! >from that, I
obtained his date of birth {25.04.1889} and then discoverd that Karl married
Viennese-born Hermine TAUBER, apparently a relative of Richard TAUBER. The
National Archives of Australia also yielded up their secrets. I am now trying
to obtain a photograph of him for his family. Apparently his papers were left
to the Jewish Museum, Melbourne. So we have really have to thank Karl KOHN for
writing down this {wrong!} number before leaving Vienna for Shanghai, on a tiny
scrap of paper and giving it to his daughter. I think of him often and now wish
to find his family graves in Baden.

Mary Barkan has been selected for the first IAJGS Salute for her work in
preserving archival material >from the original Hadassah chapter in Las Vegas,
Nevada.

Scrapbooks, photos, articles, awards, plaques, pins, and banners documented
various Hadassah events held between 1964 through 1971. The loose material
wandered >from the garage of one Hadassah member to another until Mary took
possession of the numerous boxes. It took Mary the greater part of a year to
create an index of over 4000 names for the varied materials, making future access
to the collection easier than before.

Once the project was completed, JGS of Southern Nevada donated the scanned images
and a copy of the index to the Special Collections Department of the University of
Nevada, Las Vegas. You can contact Mary at JGSSN to gain access to the index.

Mary learned a great deal about the importance of local history projects after
attending a program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She used the
information and skills when she volunteered to collect temple bulletins >from Las
Vegas synagogues for the millennium. The index contained almost 13000 names and
the project provided a snapshot of affiliated Jews >from eight of the Las Vegas
synagogues.

Mary has been interested in genealogy for almost twenty years. For nine years was
the editor of the quarterly JGSSN bulletin "Family Legacies", and continues to
produce the monthly newsletter "News to Note". All publications are full of
important genealogical information. She helps JGSSN members by teaching them how
to document information. Thank you so much Mary for your hard work. Your efforts
will be an asset to all genealogists, especially those with family ties to Las
Vegas!

- Selma A., she maried Stephan HEINER. Their children were Mimi, Liesl

- Frieda A., she married Martin ROTH. Their children were Gretl and
Walter
- Lotte A., she married ? Placek. Their daughter was Nelly, married
FISCHER. As far as I know, she had a son - Georg - who lived in Wien.

Two other sisters of Irma lived in Brno:

Dear Genners,

brothers and sisters of my g.- g.- grandfathers wife (Irma, nee
ANTSCHERL, married Rosenbaum) had lived in Wien:

- Selma A., she maried Stephan HEINER. Their children were Mimi, Liesl
and Hely (marr. HOLZER)
- Frieda A., she married Martin ROTH. Their children were Gretl and
Walter
- Lotte A., she married ? Placek. Their daughter was Nelly, married
FISCHER. As far as I know, she had a son - Georg - who lived in Wien.

Two other sisters of Irma lived in Brno:
- Ella A. , married Richard WEINBERGER. Their daughter Berti, marr.
FERTIG, probably survived the WWII. in Teresin. She had a brother -
Robert
. Their sister Hana married POKORNA.
- Klara A. married Leo ROSENBAUM, who was the brother of Hugo, my
gggrandfather (thus, two sisters married two brothers). I cannot find
any children of them.

If you know something about these relatives of mine, or if you know
some list of Wienna (Brno) Jews, etc., please contact me.

This is the Russian Jewish grandfather of a friend of mine who is not Jewish. Some
of her relatives have determined that he left >from Hamburg on the ship
Werkendam arrival New york around 1903. Last place of residence as possibly
"Panewas". He was age 7,mother's name Laura.

Apparently he married a non-Jewish woman and left all Judaism behind him. There
are family members who deny that he was Jewish. My friend would like to know more
about her grandfather who is deceased.

Any information would be appreciated.
