* Using Viewmate effectively #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear Genners,

My experience with Viewmate - this fantastic JG resource - is that even if
I do not publish my request to the list, several people send me their
answers or translations to the photos I have posted.

Thus here is my suggestion: If you publish a photo on Viewmate, wait 2-3
days before posting to the general list your request for answers. If by then
you haven't received feedback or the answers haven't been satisfactory then
send your request.

The above saves JG's bandwidth and your time by not having to read many
similar or identical answers.

BTW, thanks to all those who answered my latest two published tombstones.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Best regards and Shabbat Shalom

Judel Goldberg -- Tykocin, Poland #general

Hello,

I have a great-great grandfather named Judel/Jhuda Goldberg, who was born
in the Bialystock region (I believe in or around Tykocin, but certainly
either Grodno or Lomza Gubernia) on December 3, 1864. His parents were
Iccko Mejer Goldberg and Chaja Gitla Jaworowska. He had a brother named
Bienio Goldberg born around 1875. He emigrated to Amsterdam where he
married Marie de Boer in 1892. If this matches up with any of you, please
let me know. Additionally, if any of you have thoughts or ideas to share,
I'd appreciate those as well.

Thank You,

Ian Puente

Lois GAIL; Riverside, CA, USA; died June 2006 #general

Tim Baker <tbaker@...>

Looking for any info about Lois GAIL, who died in Riverside, CA on June 14, 1916.
Did not see an obituary in the Riverside paper or the LA Times. The SSDI says she
was born in 1916, and her Social Security number was issued in Indiana.
No children that I know of, but maybe siblings?
Maiden name unknown.
She was married to my wife's great uncle, Charles GAIL, who was born 1887 in the
Ukraine (possibly around Wishnovitz or Kremenets) and died June 1973 in Riverside.

PAVE/PAWE, Staten Island #general

SBSeales

I'm looking for the descendants of Meier PAWE >from Stuchin, Lida, who arrived at
Ellis Island with my grandmother's sister Elke BOJARSKY (Alice BOYARSKY DLOTT) in
1903.

Meier went to Boston to Alice's brother Harry, who was a haberdasher in East
Boston. Meier said on his manifest that he was a cousin of Harry.

I have found Meier in census records, and his descendants were still on
Maryland in Staten Island in 1991, where they had apparently been for decades.

Documentary film on Gross-Breesen school #germany

Marion Hattenbach Bernstein

Dear GerSIG:

My father was one of the 150 teens who attended a non-Zionist
"hachshara-type" camp in Gross Breesen, which is the "Jewish school"
portrayed in this documentary. Thought there might be others who
would like to attend.

Marion Hattenbach Bernstein San Antonio, TX

"Stones >from the Soil" will be shown at DePaul University
next Tuesday, the 22nd of May at 12 PM. It will be in the Schmitt
Academic Center, 2320 N Kenmore, room 161. It is sponsored by the
Department of Art and Art History and will be open to the public.

"Stones >from the Soil," is the documentary on my father and the one
hundred and fifty other German Jewish teenagers who were educated,
sheltered and ultimately saved by a unique Jewish school in 1930s
Germany, The film continues to play on PBS throughout the country--it just

recently showed in Buffalo, Washington, DC, and Texas.

Re: German Birth Certificate #general

Roger Lustig <julierog@...>

There have been several responses to this, noting that:

--Stettin is now Szczecin in Poland;
--Standesamt I in Berlin has Stettin records in its archive.

For most of us however, the way to get vital records >from Stettin is through the
LDS Family History Library/Centers. The city is one of a very few whose vital
records were filmed all the way up to the 1940's.

Alas, the on-line catalog at

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

is down for maintenance today. When searching, note that Stettin was a fairly
large city with more than one Standesamt (registry office).

I have not, however, been totally idle with regard to JCR-UK, as I have
been
updating and reformatting many of the existing pages, primarily to
include data extracted >from several old books and periodicals I have
acquired in recent months.

In addition, and more specifically, I have made the following additions to
the site since my last email:
Added 27 additional shuls and webpages, including:
10 in Golders Green,
3 in Edgware
2 in Hendon,
2 in the Hampstead Garden Suburb
3 in Stamford Hill and district
7 in the East End
As I have now created webpages for almost all the congregations in the
London Borough of Barnet, I have referred to these in What's New. I have
also added a reference in What's New to the additional searchable records
for Manchester.
Added extracts >from the Jewish Chronicle on the congregations in Great
Yarmouth (this contains a substantial amount of material and I accordingly
made specific reference to it in What's New) and Dewsbury, and the North
Bow & Victoria Park Synagogue, all provided by Harold Pollins.
Two further articles by Harold Pollins on the Oxford Community posted to
the site (also mentioned in What's New).
Additional materials posted to the Addelstone Jewish Congregation,
provided by Anita Phillips (also mentioned in What's New).
You don't give a relevant link/website address.

Re: Cat's meat vendor #unitedkingdom

Mark and Tamara Shofron

Dear Genners:

Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry regarding whatI thought was an odd
occupation, cat's meat vendor. Yes, I admit I was picturing someone selling cat's
meat for human consumption (and I realize this would not have been kosher).

Actually, many people in poorer neighborhoods kept cats to control the rodent
infestation. They needed to be kept fed and there were vendors who would purchase
scraps >from butchers, unfit for human consumption, and prepare these on skewer's
as pet food. These skewers might also have contained horse meat.

Also, I misidentified the Tenter Street cat's meat vendor >from the 1891 census as
Rachel SLIME. Her name was actually Rachel SHINE. Apologies to the late Mrs
Shine and to her descendants.

Regards to all,

Mark Shofron
