Looking for children of Nathan and Celia ABRAMSON #general

Howard Kaufman

Dear Genners,

I am looking for the son (Sammy) and/or daughter (Adele) of Nathan and Celia
ABRAMSON. Nathan and Celia were survivors who settled in Queens,NY and later in
Florida. They both passed away in the 1990's.

Nathan was my mother's cousin, but the details of the relationship were never
explained. I would very much like to make contact with Sammy and/or Adele, and any
help would be appreciated.

AFAIK it is exactly the same name, just pronounced with a different accent. In
Hebrew, it is spelled with a kamatz accent under the letter fay. People >from
certain areas of Eastern Europe tended to pronounce the kamatz as "oo".

Saving JRI search results #general

Fran Segall <FranSegall@...>

Does anyone know of a way to save the output of a JRI-Poland search in a useable
format other than as a "web page"? I'd like to save it as a WordPerfect document
or, better yet, an Excel spreadsheet, so I can highlight entries, mark them when
ordered, etc.

If I save it as a web page, then open it in WP, the table cells all get squished.
If I produce a text file, the columns get all messed up. Any ideas? Am I missing
something simple?

Re: More About Fires #galicia

Ann,

There is no 'cause' given for most of these fires you've told us about. It seems
likely that some (most?) of them were started deliberately (arson) by antisemites.
What's your opinion on this?

This is a followup to my continuing posts about various happenings in our
ancestral shtetls, many of which were disasters.... Someone asked me about
fires in the year of 1865 as their relative had died in one.

Pages of Testimony-unusual website summary #general

Sally Goodman <sbgoody@...>

About 10 days ago I posted a message re a website: http://jew.gendrevo.ru
which is similar to the Pages of Testimony and suggested to those interested
to check it out.

I received numerous responses:
many thanks the site is very helpful;
this is a Russian rip off site since they are trying to build web traffic
for advertisers;
this is identical to the Yad Vashem site;
the site is easier to navigate than the Yad Vashem site, etc.

Someone brilliantly suggested I email the contact on the Russian site which
I did 10 days ago. I asked where he got the information, if it was an exact
duplicate of the Yad Vashem site, did he have names on his site that Yad
Vashem did not have, what was its purpose etc. I am still waiting for a
reply.

Thank you one and all for responding. If I learn anything new that would be
helpful, I shall certainly post again.

Jewish textile merchants, England to Aleppo, 16th century? #general

MBernet@...

In an article (long out of copyright), on the early history of
Christian-Moslem confrontation by Marwan Obeidat and Ibrahim Mumayiz: "Islam and
the West: Roots of the Conflict" I read the following item:

<< In the early 1580s a deal was struck between Queen Elizabeth and the Ottoman
Sultan Murad, whereby England allowed the export of lead and tin >from its Cornish
mines to the Sultan who needed them for his armaments industry.
In return, he permitted complete freedom of movement, residence, and trade of
merchants >from Anletar (England) in the Ottoman Empire. As a result, a large
community of English merchants took up residence in Aleppo, Syria, to sell
English woolen cloth, especially kersey, throughout the Near East and buy
Damask silks, Muslin (>from the city of Mosul in Iraq) and Turkish carpets. >>

Aleppo, AKA Chaleb, was where most of Syria's Jews were living, close to
what is today's Turkey. Chalabi Jews were prominent in the textile trades in
Lancashire, UK, in export-import business around the world >from the 19th
century to this day. I wonder whether this "large community of English merchants"
were in fact Jews who had been secretly living in England under Queen
Elizabeth.

Perhaps, they were simply working for the Englishmen in Aleppo, providing
provincial goods for export?

Does anyone have information on this? Speculation and derision are equally
welcomed, just be clear which it is.
