Does anyone know the modern equivalent of the town

Moshe:

There was a Jack Wolpert who was a well-known chess player in South Africa,
even wining the South African chess championship once in 1937. Search for

and you'll find brief mentions of his records. Also lots of other Wolperts.

Dear SA SIG discussion group members,

I'm looking for information on my late great-aunt Leah (Elka?) Katz, nee
Wolpert, born ~1891 in Keidan, Lithuania and possible descendants. The name
of her father was Notel Wolpert and her mother was Sarah-Devorah Biron.
I only know that in 1946-47 she was in South Africa (I don't knew when she
emigrated >from Lithuania) and had been in touch (several letters) with her
half-sister, my late grandmother, Rywa Trocki-Musnicki, nee Wolpert, and
with my late mother, Shifra (Sofia) Werber, nee Trocki-Musnicki, who lived
at that time in Brussels, Belgium.

My great-aunt was then - in 1947, living with her husband, Moses or Moshe?
Katz at the following address: 49, Berea Rd. , Bertrams, Johannesburg.
However, 2 letters sent - >from Israel - in 1962 were never answered and the
last one was even returned in January 1963 as undeliverable.

There is an estate probate file for a Leah Katz in the Transvaal archives,
but I could not find out if this is that of my great-aunt.

the Hebrew name Itsky Batsky #hungary

Amos Israel Zezmer <amos.zezmer@...>

I recently interviewed a cousin who told me that her Hebrew name was
equivalent to the phonetic "Itsky Batsky."

As she writes:

I'm afraid I can't explain any more to you about my hebrew or jewish
name. My mother doesn't remember a thing about the origin of that name
"Itsky Batsky" though it was familiar to her when I reminded her of it.
(I am reporting the name phonetically as I heard it said.) My father's
father was a cantor in an orthodox synagogue at the time of my birth
[1947] so perhaps the name was given by him in that congregation. I'm
only guessing.

I am stumped. Does anyone have any inkling as to what Itsky Batsky could
actually be?

Request Info about passenger ships to Haifa in 1933 #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

The best place to look for the ship information is the following site which
is part of The Ships List:
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/lloydtriestino.htm

It describes the company which owned the ship, its routes and the names of
all the ships it owned and their history. There was an ITALIA which was put into
service in 1905 and was owned by the Soc. Italiana di Servizi Marittimi, Naples.
In 1931, it was transferred to the Lloyd Triestino Line. In 1943, it was seized by
the Germans and in 1944 was sunk during an Allied air attack.

Following Hilary Henkin's posting entitled: "Book online - analysis of Nazi doctors

concentrates on Austria and Vienna: http://www.gedenkstaettesteinhof.at/
Click on the lower bed and you get the English-language version. Then you see
the eighteen beds, each deal with a separate subject.
It is not pleasant and deals with all victims, regardless of age and religion.
