Solomon Zelman GLOBUS #general

sbloom@...

I am looking for more information on the family of Solomon Zelman GLOBUS who lived
from c. 1760-1831. He was the son of Eliezer, and married a great granddaughter of
Jehiel HEILPERIN ("Seder Hadorot"). I believe she had no known surname, and was not
a direct male line descendant of R. Jehiel (so did not have the name HEILPERIN). At
one point, this family was in Vilna, but I do not know if Solomon GLOBUS and his
descendants were. I do find in the Revision Lists of Lithuania , a Berko GLOBUS
b. 1791, who was son of Zelman, and lived in Vilnius proper. His children were:
Chaim Ovsey, Israel Movsha, and Pesach. He was married to Miryam. There are known
grandchildren as well, so I think its promising to link this particular branch to
the present day.

I would appreciate it if someone could contact me privately if they have
information on Solomon GLOBUS or known descendants and whether or not this family
in the Revision Lists is likely to be the same people.

I am looking in general to find information pertaining to modern day descendants of
Jehiel Heilperin, since it has been alleged that my great great great great
grandfather, Eliasz Nuchem Halpern, descends directly >from him. This part of the
GLOBUS family would be my distant cousins.

Thanks!

Photo Studios in Wysokie Mazowieckie, Poland #general

Would anyone know if there were any photo studios in Wysokie Mazowieckie, Poland in
the early 1900's? I have a picture postcard of my great-uncle that was taken around
1910 at the H.E. Hawin Photo Studio in Zambrow, Poland, and this made me wonder if
he actually lived in Zambrow instead of Wysokie Mazowieckie. I would interested to
know what photo studios existed in both Wysokie Mazowieckie and Zambrow in the
early 1900's.

My great-grandfather, Julian Kushnier >from Chobno, Russia (Ukraine), was in
the Czars' Army during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. Would anyone know where
I could obtain any kind of documentation that would list my great-granfather
on the muster roll of the Czars' Army?

Finding Records in South Africa #general

Debbie Bozkurt <debbieinscotland@...>

I am trying to trace my Great Uncle's movements >from Poland (ibzica kujswska I
think) in the early part of this century. His name was Solly LACHMAN/LATCHMAN. I
have been told by his grandson that he has photos of him in South African. Solly
married in 1906 in London and his wife was on the census with her family in 1901. I
can only assume he was in South Africa between the late 1890s and early 1900s. His
sister married bymy great grandfather in 1898 in London so by means of deduction
if the whole family left about the same time (parents and another brother and
sister) Solly may have entered South Africa about 1898.

Has anyone any idea how I can go about tracing his movements in South Africa, was
there a weekly jewish paper. I tried the South African database but couldn't find
anything. Don't know if there are any records of passenger movements.

Any help would most appreciated.

Thanks

<<My grandfather Pinchas LERNER lived in Tsfat in the late 1800's-early 1900's. He
claimed descent >from R' Naftali KATZ (died about 1719), author of the S'michas
Chachamim.
<<My gggrandfather Harav Binyamin HACOHEN lived in Kosov around 1850, and claimed

<<Benjamin Lerner
<<Brooklyn, NY, / Jerusalem

I have been on a similar search for several years as I also have an ancestral line
that claims descent >from R' Naftali KATZ, the Smichat Chachamim. Although I have
done extensive research, I am still missing about 3 generations. This is partly
due, of course, to the lack of civil records >from that time period. The main
problem, it seems, is that the missing ancestors were not recorded in the
rabbinical literature because they were not prominent rabbis or, for that matter,
were not rabbis.

The ancestral surname I have been researching is HORENSTEIN (>from Ukraine). In that
earlier time period, they, like your ancestors, used the appelation HaKohen. I
have traced them back to Berestechko around the end of the 18th century.

As part of my search, I have developed an extensive genealogical tree for the
descendants of R. Naftali Katz. I couldn't find an exact match for your ancestor,
although I did find two descendents of his brother, R' Jesaia Katz, named Benjamin
HaKohen:
One was R' Benjamin Benish HaKohen, a student of R' Akiva Eiger. I don't have
dates or a location for him; however, his son was born in Warta in 1790. Moreover,
his greatgrandson was R' Avraham Benjamin HaKohen; he died in Warta in 1881.

I don't know whether these LEWKOWICZ variants >from Radziejow, Poland are related to
each other or not but as administrator of the LEFKOWITZ surname project at Family
Tree DNA, I can tell you that we have five members >from Poland with variants of the
name LEFKOWITZ and none of them are genetically related to each other. I think that
many people independently adopted variants of this surname. Particularly, as you
notice, there are many males with the given name Lewek. Maybe the Lewek's of
Radziejow in the early 19th century were related to each other, or maybe it just
means Lewek was a common name.

According to the website of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce the two countries
recently celebrated 450 years of trade relations.

http://www.standrewsmoscow.org Anglican worship was first allowed in 1553 by the
Tsar for British traders. I cannot comment as to whether there was settlement but
apparently Huegenots were invited to Russia in 1689 following the Edict of Nantes.
Peter the Great came to England at about this time to study shipbuilding at
