ABRAMOWITZ born in Goldingen #latvia

Susanne Fleischer <susanne.fleischer@...>

Hello Arye !

I don't remember if we have been in touch before. If this matter is
already discussed you have to forgive me. My memory isn't very good
anymore. What I wanted to ask you is the possibility of a connection
between Temmie ABRAMOWITZ born in Goldingen who was my granmothers
grandmother and your grandmother. Temmie is conected to Goetz and
Goetzel mentioned in familylists >from Goldingen in JewishGen according
to the archive in Riga.

Warm regards
Susanne Fleischer

MINTSELES or MINCZELES #galicia

Reuven Liebes <reuvel@...>

I read in with great interest in the Digest explanation of Jewish
names. My father's father surname was "MINTSELES". According to
German dictionary it means "small coins." I saw many Jewish
families had this surname. Where was this name from? Was this
from "Muncer" coin maker?
My grandfather did not like this name and preferred his wife
surname "Liebes". I did not find explanation for the given names:
"Jetty or Jita", Salomon Cudek.

Feedback: "14 Years of The G" #galicia

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

If you have purchased and tried out the new "14 Years of "The
Galitzianer" (Collected issues 1993-2007) CD, Gesher Galicia would
like to get your feedback....positive and/or negative.

For future iterations of this type of CD it would be useful to know
what worked...or what didn't work, what was confusing and/or helpful
for you. Suggestions are also welcomed.

Please send your comments privately to me and I will forward to all
who were involved in creating this CD.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy, go to:

registration of illegitimate child #galicia

Suzan & Ron Wynne <srwynne@...>

This topic has been covered many times in the digest. Very briefly,
the Austrian government required that the births of ALL children be
registered. Whether or not a child's parents were married under
civil law is irrelevant. However, if the parents had only a
religious marriage and had not complied with the law (i.e., had a
civil marriage) the registrar was supposed to post only the mother
unless the father appeared with two witnesses attesting to the
man's identity and paternity.

Doing a search for all the children of the mother under her name
can sometimes reveal an entry for the husband/father. Also in death
records, occasionally, the spouse is noted even when the spouse was
not "legal."

Is there anyone studying the LDS (Mormon) microfilms of Ternopil

Shtetl help needed #lithuania

joniffer3@...

My cousin Moshe YUTER (later Rabbi Moses ETTER) was born in Kupiskis
and married a woman named Sheine around the year 1908. The marriage
record can't be found. According to various Ellis Island manifests,
their children (Levik, Samuel, Sara & Leiba ETTER) were all born in a
town called Scheschensk, Chechersk or Chilhersk, 'Russia'. Every document
has a different spelling. My ShtetlSeeker searches have revealed no
Lithuanian towns resembling this name. Does anyone have any ideas where
this town may have been located? The 'Chilhersk' annotation also includes
a gubern. called "Homler".

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!

Searching TEICHMAN etc..., now: What happens to landsmanshaft records? #general

Ron Goldman

I've been thinking along these lines, giving them to YIVO. It would be ideal
if anyone in the WPB area of FL could take them to NY and deliver them there
on the next trip/visit to the City. Everything is in one attache case.

Ron GOLDMAN

As an archivist, I hope Ron Goldman's next step, having found these records,
is to make arrangements to donate them to an appropriate archives.
