JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Request of what to put on a tombstone
#general
Mjn519@...
This may seem like a strange question but I was wondering today about the
tombstone makers. When a person dies, would the stone be made >from the cemetery or an outside company? I'm sure its one or the other. So would they have the original information as to what they would need to put on the tombstone (the request >from a relative as to what to carve on the stone)? How would I find this information (the tombstone maker and request?) I am looking during the years of 1907-1948, cemeteries in NY and NJ. ~Marie Lubman Researching: GREENSTONE, GUTERMAN, FISCHER, AUGUST, ZACHER, SOLOMON

The YASHINOVSKI family was >from Bransk, Poland.
Son Yankel left Poland c 1926, eventually settling in Cuba. By then his sister Gutka Tova CIMBAL moved to Sweden with her family. The rest of the family perished in the holocaust in Bransk. In 1950 Yankel was able to find (after much search) his sister Gutka and her family in Israel. He very soon arrived for a visit. What we know; He was well off and was a colonel of the fire department in Cuba. He was married twice and had 3 daughters; two >from his first wife and the third was >from a local Cuban woman. During the visit in Israel ( c 1950) Yankel (dressed in uniforms) went to the Rehovot home of the first president of Israel; Chaim Weizmann, and gave him a Diploma of the fire fighters of Havana. He kept in touch with the family in Israel for some years but then touch was lost.maybe someone would know the daughters?.... Eilat Gordin Levitan Los Angeles

Searching for my aunt Rachel ZYLBERSZTAJN
#general
Rose and Robert Raymen <rr.raymen@...>
Dear Genners
For several years now I've been searching for records of my aunt Rachel ZYLBERSZTAJN (ZILBERSZTEJN) to no avail. According to the POT my father lodged in 1956, my aunt was 16 years old when she perished in the Lublin Ghetto in 1941. Rachel was born in Kalisz (Poland) the second child of my paternal grandfather, Abram ZYLBERSZTAJN and Raszka NOMBURG, his second wife. Although I've been unsuccessful in obtaining any records for my aunt, I was fortunate enough to locate a birth and census record for her brother Isochor (Yissachar) born in 1925. I would appreciate any suggestions >from you, especially those researching Polish records. Please respond privately. Best Wishes Rose Raymen Perth, Western Australia rr.raymen@... Searching: ZYLBERSZTAJN (ZILBERSZTEJN) (Kalisz, Poland) LENCZYCKI (LECZYCKI) (Kalisz, Poland) HAZE (HASE) (Kalisz, Poland) BABIACKI (Kalisz, Poland) NOMBURG (Kalisz, Poland) BORNSZTAJN (BORNSZTEJN) (Lask, Poland) ZAJFE (Kalisz, Poland).

New York Times Magazine article: How do you prove you are a Jew?
#general
Mark Fearer <Mark.Fearer@...>
Hi folks,
I'm on the digest mode, so hopefully this is not repetitive. There a good and very long article, entitled "How do you prove you are a Jew?" and while it focuses on religion, genealogy plays a prominent role in answering that question. The link is: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/02/magazine/02jewishness-t.html You may need to register, if you haven't already. Mark Fearer

ORLEN of Rochester NY
#general
Steve Orlen
Dear Cousins,
A number of years ago I wrote, then called an elderly widow of an ORLEN man, who lived in Rochester, NY. Obviously, I wanted to find out if there was any connection to my family. But the woman wouldn't talk about it, and hung up. Does anyone know, personally, any members of that family, who might be willing to talk to me? Best, Steve Orlen Tucson AZ

Kurt and Erma SCHLESINGER Son Henry - Incorporation or stockholder search
#general
Melodysdeals
I received a wonderful idea to my posting yesterday about locating Kurt
and Erma SCHLESINGER's son, Henry. I know that Kurt owned several properties in New York City and that one of the partners was an attorney. It was suggested that they probably incorporated. I don't think the corporation would have any of their names in the name of the corporation, but if there was a way to search by share holders or officers, then I could at least find the name of the corporation. The attorney's son did tell me that his father left the group and that Kurt remained with only one other partner for a while. When the partnership had large holdings, it was decided to distribute the properties and go their separate way to ensure that their children would not have to work with so many people. Stephen was sketchy on details. He is in his 70's and does not remember his father having anything other than a business relationship with Kurt. One of the other partners was Vladamir (he did not remember a last name), but he was a family friend that later went into show business in some form. They all attended the same synagogue in New York City. I am hoping that someone will have some ideas on how to search using this information. Melody Mayes nee Pinkus #292191

I have a group photo >from 1910 and another group photo >from 1919. A
woman, 91-years-old in 1910 and 100 years-old in 1919 is obviously present in each photo. I have reason to believe that others, ranging in age >from approximately 6 to 55 in 1910, are present in each photo. Is there anyone, skilled in facial recognition, who would be willing to look at the two photos and tell me if there are any further matches? Thanks.
