I am really shocked at the news of Boris Krantz's untimely death -
Boris was untiring in his efforts to research his family history. I have
corresponded with him over the last 7 years or so, and met him in N.Y. in
2003. He was successful in finding previously unknown relatives and their
descendants, and delighted when he did find them.
As Stephanie Weiner wrote, he was indeed a gentle man, and he will be sadly
missed.

I am hoping someone can translate this post card >from Lithuania. It is

two smaller items also marked as Yiddish but I am not sure if those are also
in Russian. They are items #10186 and 10187.

The direct links are:

Wajn and Gurewich from around Krynki #poland

My friend is looking for her family, this is all we have to go on.

On the 27 Jan 1941 the "President Adams " arrived in New York. This
steamship had departed >from the port of Bombay, India 19th of December 1940
and, on board were Samuel Soltes and Mera Soltes.
Samuel was 49 a US Citizen, a metalworker, he was born in Stanislaw,
Austria. Travelling on USA Passport 1076 issued Jerusalem, Palestine on 23
August 1939. Last place of residence given is Tel Aviv, Palestine.
Mera was 26, (wife is penciled in after surname Soltes.) a housewife, a
subject of Great Britain, born in Krinky, Poland. Mera was travelling on
NQIV #11 Section (4,A) Issued in Jerusalem, Palestine, 30 October 1940.

Mera born in Krynki was the daughter of Benjamin Wajn and Hacia Gurewich,
(mother's name was >from the Social security papers filed in USA)

After my mom escaped Poland she never heard a word >from her family again and
would rarely even answer our questions. She had written to the Red Cross for
many years looking for her family and never received an answer. One time she
said her letter returned and it's my guess she never tried again. All that I
remember about them is that her mom was one of twins and that she had 5-6
brother and sisters. The only names I know are the names of three of her
siblings: Ben, Rebecca & Jackie.

Hoping some of the listers may have come across these names

Thank you --

Re: HAKIM of Izmir and elsewhere #general

tom klein <jewishgen@...>

The use of "hakham" instead of rabbi in moslem countries (including izmir) was
because "rabbi" was considered too close to one of the supposed attributes of
Allah, and therefore the moslems prohibited its use.

The use of a word meaning "sage" as a title for both rabbis and physicians makes
perfect sense to me. And sometimes, as in the case of Maimonides, they were both.

Organized university training for physicians is a relatively new phenomenon,
starting late in the 19th century, I believe.
