KarlStrassee 95 Duesseldorf #germany

Ilan Szekely <tcdb@...>

Hello Genners

My grandmother who lived in Duesseldorf wrote her last letter to my
mother in 1941.
Among many other things she says the "we moved to KarlStrassee 95".
This is very near to where they used to live for over 30 years.

Last week I have been there on a "roots tour". We looked for that address
and found that there is a huge building [at KarlStrassee 95 Duesseldorf] which
serves now as a Deutsche Post facility. It is very near to the BahnHof.

My question:
What was his building used for in 1941? Did it survive the WWII?

I suspect it was a Government facility, probably even a prison.
Looking at the building with the hep of GOOGLE MAPS show a huge
building that spans to all neighboring streets... Thanks

My father's name was Henry (no middle name). His family immigrated from
Kraisk, Vileika, Vilno (no Belarus), @ 1900.

I don't know for whom he was named, but I just found out that his Hebrew
name is *Chano*. When I searched the Jewishgen given names, I never saw
that exact spelling.

Does anyone have any ideas about this unusual Hebrew spelling?
Actually that's not a Hebrew spelling. Hebrew is written in the Hebrew
alphabet, and that's in a Roman alphabet. It may be an attempt at
transliterating a Hebrew or Yiddish name. The question is, what name
is that? My guess is chet-nun-aleph or chet-nun-heh, both with kamatz
under the chet and nun, which Kolatch's Name Dictionary lists as masculine
names (chet-nun-heh is much more common as the feminine name "Chanah", but
the first vowel of that would be a patach).

Rica asked:
Has anyone ever heard of the surname SLUCHITEL/SHULZICKEL/SHLUZITEL?

There is a Yad Vashem report for Hertz Sluzitel who was born in
Birzai in 1889, to Hirsh and Hinda. The report is >from 1988 and is by
his daughter Fruma >from Israel. Vabalninkas is in the Birzai district.

My sincere thanks to David Laufer and Peter Lowe for their responses to my
enquiry concerning Walter and Vera FALKENAU.They have provided me with
essential information and vital links which may yet lead to the tracing of
surviving relatives.

Hi Listers,
Can anyone please help, or point me in the right direction. I see quite a
bit of work is being done on other towns, is there any info on Innsbruck?
I am trying to get my G Grand parents death records. They did live in
Vienna, and latterly in Innsbruck. I have never been able to find the
records of their death, let alone their graves.
I am told by a cousin in Israel, that he recalls his mother taking him to
the Cemetery in Innsbruck to visit the graves. I have had researchers
there, who were very helpful, but have literally told me to "go away". IGK
have no records in either Innsbruck or Vienna.
I was in Innsbruck 2 years ago, an visited the cemetery. There are many many
family graves there, but I could not find their one. I was also looking for
my Grandfather's grave. I was told that part of the cemetery was taken for
Road moving, and that graves were moved, and headstones removed, and
replaced with a Plaque listing those grave that had been moved. His name was
on there, but not my G Grandparents, so that's not the answer....Where can I
turn to, sure the must be some record of the 2 deaths...I am looking for
JOSEF BAUER d 17th march 1889, and REGINA BAUER, nee Mueller d 1 st Dec
1901.
Please if anyone can point me in the right direction. I am going to Vienna
later this year, IGk have not answered request for an appointment, are they
the only orginzation that would have records?
Thanks
Kind regards

where was the "wuzet" in Kolomea #galicia

Evnine Rachel

This a question directed to people who came >from Kolomea and the
vicinity.

In a letter written to my father by a friend of his in July 1943,
the friend tells him the last whereabouts of my grandfather, who
was chased away by the Russians in 1940 >from his home town
Stanislawow to Kolomea, and found there a place to live in an
apartment near the "wuzet." (Apparently "wuzet" was an acronym for
vocational schools in Galizia.)

When I visited Kolomea last June I had hoped to locate my
grandfather's last dwelling, but was not able to find out any
information where or what was "wuzet".

Is there anybody who happens to know what was the "wuzet", and
where in Kolomea it was?

Thanks,

Rachel Lieberman-Evnine
