Binenbaum and the Russian ARmy after WW2 #ukraine

Larry Binenbaum

The BENENBAUM (BINENBAUM) family was a wealthy Jewish family who lived
in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyy (Akkerman), Ukraine in the early 20th century
and until WW2. The patriarch was Pesach BENENBAUM, who married Chaya (
Khava) and they had ten (10) children - eight (8) boys and two (2) girls.
The family had a large scale wholesale business. They were big time
merchants who supplied grain, leather goods, etc. to the governments
and armies of Romania and Russia.

Some of the family emigrated to Palestine before WW2.

During WW2 the remaining members of the family were evacuated to Asia
in advance of the Nazi's occupation of Akkerman. The old parents
(Pesach and Chaya), two (2) daughters (Doba and Ester), and at least
two (2) sons (Jakow and Tzvi) were left behind to care for the large
real estate the family had. The family assumed the Nazis would not
touch them. Unfortunately they were executed by the Germans.
After the war the family returned to Akkerman. Then in circa 1945
Communist Russia nationalized their whole property.

After the war in about 1950, one of the sons, Naum Grigorivich BENENBAUM,
was drafted into the Russian Army.

My questions are:
At about what age would Naum Grigorivich BENENBAUM have been when he
was drafted into the Army?

How many years would Naum Grigorivich BENENBAUM have had to serve
in the Russian Army?

Naum Grigorivich BENENBAUMâ??s home town was Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyy
(Akkerman), Ukraine, but he was stationed in Perfomaysk, Ukraine
which is about 209..0 kilometers (129.9 miles) apart. Was this
normal to be stationed so close to home?

I want to thank the members of this SIG in advance for any information
that someone can give to me.

My cousins are planning a short visit to Tarnow, and offered to search
for a few family records. What are the procedures? Is it possible to
search on the spot, and get copies at the same time? Is an
appointment necessary? How can I find the opening hours and the exact
address? Also, where is the Jewish cemetery in Tarnow, and is it open
without appointment?

Please reply privately.

Tom grandson of David of Boston -1920s #general

Researching whereabouts of a lost branch of our family.

The few clues which I have was that my ggguncle David (originally ABRAMOWITZ
but most likely americanized his name) who lived in Boston, during the
latter part of the 19th cent. beg. 20th, had a grandson Tom. It seems that
Tom's father was not jewish was divorced >from David's daughter and lived
with his father in Boston but may have spent his summers with his mother in
New York (possibly Coney Island).

Tom was single during the early 1930s.

If any of the above sounds familiar to you I'd be happy to hear.

PECKER/STEIN in Brooklyn #general

yehuda frischman

While in Israel recently, I met a gentleman who does not have access
to the internet, and has authorized me to do research on his behalf.
( I live in Los Angeles). Meir STEIN who is now 60, came to Brooklyn
in the mid 70s and married the former Rachel PECKER, whose father was
the late Rabbi Dov Pecker. They had two daughters. The first
daughter, who he is almost certain (explanation to follow) was named
Malka, was born in either in 1975 or early 1976. Shortly thereafter,
they had a second daughter, Miriam, who died of Tay Sachs as an
infant. He was so devasted by her loss, the prospect that he and his
wife were obviously both carriers of the chromosome, and that there
was a strong likelihood that any future children born to them could
also, G-d forbid, come down with Tay Sachs, that he divorced her,
initially moved to LA and later moved back to Israel to be with his
elderly father. The chapter was just too painful for him to bear,
and so that was the last contact that he had with either the ex-wife
or the daughter. When he last saw his daughter, she was 1 1/2 years old.
But time heals wounds, and now hewould very much like to find his daughter
and would even consider reconciling with his ex-wife, assuming that she never
married again. I have tried unsuccessfully to find any of them, and though I did
find a few Peckers in Brooklyn, and a couple of Malka Steins and Rachel
Steins, they weren't the right ones.

Can you help?

In one of Reb' Aharon Hausman's book (something like Yalkut Divrei Aharon)
when writing about Reb' Asher "Hazaken" of Stolin, he mentions that his
daughter Perl who married Reb' Mordechai , Admo"r of Lechovitz, had two sons
and a daughter. The daughter, Miriam, was married to Yosef the son of Reb'
Yisrael of Ostraha.

Does anyone have any information as to details of this Yisrael biography. I
am a seventh generation descendant of his (not >from the above Yosef).

Searching for Descendants of OPPENHEIM & BARUC & BAHR #general

Carolyn Lea <clea@...>

I have been working on the family tree of Hertz Wolf OPPENHEIM (b Hannover)
and Catherine MOSES (b Charleston). One daughter, Matilda Rebecca, md.
Bernard Sigismund BARUC and the family settled in NYC. Their daughter,
Emilie (d 1933 in Chicago), md Herman August BAHR (d 1930 in Chicago) in
1881 in NYC and the couple moved to Chicago by 1900.

They had three daughters:

Matilda N - b abt 1882 in NYC
Julia V - b abt 1885 in NYC - md a ROSENTHAL between 1920 and 1930 - shown
as widowed in 1930.
Rose E - b abt 1890 in NYC - md J Leonard ROSS (J Leonard died 1936 in
Chicago) by 1918

I can not find Rose and Matilda after 1920 and can not find Julia after 1930
when she is listed as a widow. I do not know if any of the women had
children. Emilie's obit >from 11 Jun 1933 Chicago Trib identifies the
daughters as Matilda N, Julie V Rosenthal, and Rose B Ross so it is possible
Matilda never md. A Mathilda is listed as dying in Chicago, Cook county in
1937. I have not found an obit for this Mathilda in the Tribune archives. If
any of these names seem familiar please contact me.
