Dear fellow Genners,

I have had a wonderful response >from a number of you offering help
with the translation of a stone >from the Hebrew, and have sent it on
Therefore, I no longer need any further offers.

Paul Wolf, who immediately responded: I have twice sent you the scan
but both attempts to respond to your mail have failed. But, I do thank
you here, also.

The amazing talents and generosity of this group never cease to amaze
me! I am so very grateful!

Dear Saul,

This mail gave me the impression, that Volume IV has been completed.
That is not the case, as I was given to understand by a researcher in
Jo'burg.

Sincerely,
Dennis Kahn

Re: Official re-organisation of Jewish communities in Bohemia - 1850 #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Something strange has happened. I sent in this posting with the correct url for the googlebook which Larry
Freund told me about:

Notablenversammlung der Israeliten Bohmens in Prag:
Ihre Berathungen und Beschluse.(mit statistischen Tabellen
uber die Israelitischen Gemeinden, Synagogen, Schulen und
Rabbinate in Bohmen.) By Albert Kohn, Rabbi in Roudnice nad Labem
Published by Leopold Sommer, 1852 - Original >from Harvard University
Digitized Jun 1, 2006 416 pages

http://books.google.com/books?id=NDFHo5tIypgC&pg

I waited for a few days till it appeared and now some genners tell me they cannot access the link. There is a
new system at Lyris, called barracuda, which is not happy with some URLs and this may be the cause. As the
name implies, barracuda is quite fierce! Unlike a moderator, who verbally rejects your mail, the barracuda
may just chew it up and not tell you. I was assured that this is being investigated and will be rectified after
teething [excuse double-entendre] problems. In case it happens again - the letters ND come after the
equal sign and before FH.

And here is the tinyurl which may be more immune: http://tinyurl.com/6d9d66

Re my phrase: "a big yawn" - this refers to the minutiae of the book - para one, sub para two etc etc, not
the concept and the tables which are very interesting. It is quite an effort to read through the lengthy text
in gothic script, especially late at night!

I did notice people present who would be of interest to our genners, ie Angelus KAFKA >from Pilsen, for
Peter Barber and I am sure there are others.

I am reliably informed by Joe Feitler, who allows me to quote:
"the draft version of an ordinance (or local law) was needed under Europe's "Napoleonic Code" (Session 5)
to create the legal "frame work" for Jewish congregations and their hierarchy. This pattern still prevails in
Central Europe (e.g., Austria) with a local Chief Rabbi (and a Chief Cantor), a county level Chief Rabbi, and
a state level Chief Rabbi. For example, Austria's Chief Rabbi in Vienna also serves as Austria's Chief Rabbi
since most of the other Austrian Jewish communities seemed to have disappeared."

Article in AARP magazine #dna

Dick Plotz

The new issue of AARP (American Association of Retired People)
magazine features an article by Richard Rubin about the use of DNA
testing in genealogy. Rubin writes about his search for his own
Jewish family roots, finding relatives through JewishGen's partner
Family Tree DNA (see http://www.jewishgen.org/DNA/), and maintaining
an online virtual family circle. The article is available online at
<http://www.aarpmagazine.org/family/genetic_genealogy.html>. The
sidebar on how it works is a bit misleading, but the article itself
gives a good feel for what it's like to search for family and the
role DNA testing can play.
