Re: TB #general

Barry Lachman

TB was a very common disease for Eastern European immigrants. My
grandfather died of TB in 1914 when my mother was 12. In order to put
the original question in perspective, an understanding of TB as a
disease is needed. TB is a bacteria of very high infectivity. Only
one or two bacilli (individual bacteria) are enough to cause
infection. However, the body can wall off the disease and inactivate
it. It is not killed and can restart years later. It is very common
for those exposed to have calcified TB nodules. Stress can cause the
disease to become active and aggressive. Thus, one explanation for
the women dying is pregnancy induced stress. Another factor in
disease severity can be the size of the exposure. Thus, if the women
were nursing the sick, they might have a greater exposure and more
severe disease.

Lithuania Internal Passport Records #general

Howard Margol

I just distributed another group of Ukmerge Lithuania Internal Passport
Records, 1919-1940 to the qualified contributors.
So far, 684 Ukmerge records have been translated with a lot more to be
translated. I have just added a second translator to the Ukmerge Internal
Passport records so the work should advance more quickly in the future. In
order to make sure all of the Ukmerge Int. Pass. records get translated, a
minimum contribution of $100 would be appreciated. You would receive all of
the past and future Ukmerge I.P. records that are translated.

I am referring only to Internal Passport records. This is an entirely
separate project that is not connected to vital records or other types of
records projects. These I.P. records contain a lot of very important
information. In addition, if you find records of interest, you can write to
the Central archive in Vilnius and obtain copies of all documents in that
person's file.

To donate, please go to
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Lithuania/InternalPassports.htm
and scroll down to Project Needs. You can use your credit card as the site
is secure.

If you do make a contribution, please let me know so I can send you the
records. It will be at least a month before Jewishgen will advise me of your
contribution.

HEIMOWITZ - Hunsdorf/Huncovce #general

Marian Brown

I just found out that my great grandmother, Sarah HEIMOVITZ NEWMAN, was
born in Hunsdorf ca 1931. I have no record of her birth there.
She lived in Licsert/Licartovce and I found a record stating her father
was Sol. Hwimowitz.

There is also a rabbi, Solomon HEIMOWITZ, mentioned in many marriages in
Lemes/Lemesany, Slovakia. He was married to Mari HELISAUER and they had
a daughter, Mali, married to Marcus STURZ.

Also, I have Hungarian records for a family >from Huncovce as follows:

Solomon HEIMOWITCH (a jurist?)
married to Maria MARKUS

Children all born in Huncovce:

Nathan HEIMOWITZ b 1827 in Huncovce. A not on his 1847 marriage record
to Leny FUCH/FRICS states that he worked for his grandfathr, Samuel
MARCUS in a canvas textile factory

Markus HEIMOWITCH b 1834

Chaja HEIMOWITCH b 1836

Lowy HEIMOWITCH b 1837

Jeches HEIMOWITCH b 1847

Does any of this ring a bell?

Thanks,

Marian Brown

Read All Sides of a Tombstone #general

Carol M Jaffe <cmjaffe@...>

In a comment to Barbara Zimmer who wrote about reading all sides of a
tombstone. Awhile ago I requested photos of my ancestors/relatives >from a
cemetery in Louisville, KY. The reverse side of my gr uncle and aunts
family stone (LAZARUS) was a different surname (FLEISCHAKER) and I am almost
positive they are not related to us. The funeral home who sent the photos
is going to try and check further, as this is something I have never seen,
but am curious. In all the other photos I have received there aren't any
others like this one.
