1911 Census #unitedkingdom

Jeanette R Rosenberg <106503.3561@...>

Hi everyone

Louise Messik asked: "Can anyone tell me whether the return was made by a
census taker or by the head of household?"

I have read somewhere that it was taken by the head of the household. In
fact one of the selling points is that this will give people an opportunity
to see their ancestor's handwriting for the first time.

Curiously I have also noted an issue with someone I was looking for, and he
was also called Lewis! The man in question named himself "Lowis" on his
form, and of course the transcribers did what they are supposed to and
typed what they could see, so they called him Lowis, not Lewis. Of course
this also meant that he wrote the name of his daughter Mary down as "Marry"
but that is just another of those things to make me smile!

Louis / Lewis #unitedkingdom

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Just a note regarding use of the first names of Louis and Lewis. They were
often interchangeable and were usually the anglicized versions of Leib
(Yehudah Leib).

My grandfather, who lived in Manchester, had his name spelled in both ways
on a number of documents. I believe Lewis was the final version that
everyone settled on and his grandson was named Lewis.

It was sometimes common for variant spellings of a name to be used as people
were not as keen on correct spelling as we are today. Combine that with
individuals who were emigrants speaking a foreign language and clerks who
may not have been that well-educated and you get the confusion with names in
records.

For instance, I have many records for the same person and their name is
spelled a different way on each record.

Dear Cousins,

This is a chilly time of year to make this request, but if anyone

but if I knew the Hebrew names I might have a better chance of
finding them on the immigration sites.

Strovitsa #general

Bea <blspabas@...>

Hello JGenners,

can anyone tell me where the place name of Strovitsa was, also what it would
be called now and where it may be today? I am researching a friends tree
but even though he told me it may have been somewhere in either Galicia,
Austria, Hungary, Poland or the Ukraine, I cannot find this place name
anywhere. I do not have any further information to go on, apart >from adding
that there is a Greek Strovitsa but the Greek one is not the one I am
looking for.

Hope you can help and thank you

On my family tree I have two brothers both living in New Jersey in the
same local area. One was called Louis and his brother was Jacob L or
JL and for a period of time JL also called himself Louis. So I have
two brothers inthe same local area using the same name. Try and sort
that one out on things like the Census ... its enough to drive you to

Why Go to Bad Kudowa #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

In Germany in those days, as in the Catskills in the 1950s, it was
common for the women & children to take a vacation without their
husbands. One didn't have to be hugely wealthy, just middle class.
