Kaunas Family List 1858-1915 - A LitvakSig Special Project #general

Dorfleiv@...

The second of the 18 files which make up this project was recently
circulated. It covers the years 1858-1897 for the letters D-L (D,E, ZH,
Z, K,L) and contains 1124 lines of data. The wealth of information contained
is outstanding.
One of the interesting features of these lists that they sometimes tell
us where our ancestors came from. This particular file includes a significant
number of entries relating to people who came >from Zeimai to Kaunas.
The 11 most frequently occuring surnames are KIRKEL 18; LANKISKY
18; KATZ 19; DREYSHPUL 23; IVENSKY 26; KAPELIOV 27; LEVITAN 34;
KLEBANSKY 39; LEVIN 41;LEVINSON 44; KAGAN 82.

The third file will be available shortly. For further information contact
me at Dorfleiv@...

Seeking the kind services of an expert who can handle computer sound files #general

Dave Lichtenstein

Dear All

My late mother Felicja LICHTENSTEIN (nee HERINGMAN) suffered a massive heart
attack in 2003 and died soon afterwards of complications resulting >from the
heart attack. She was a survivor of the Nazi invasion of Poland as well as
the invasion of Poland by the Soviet Union. Surrounded by her family at her
death bed I took a portable cassette driven tape recorder with me and
recorded her recollections of her time in Poland etc. Regrettably I was
not sitting next to her while recording but rather near the foot of her bed.
Accordingly, her voice appears to be quite faint at times in the recording.
There is also some extraneous traffic noise as well as general hospital
trolley noise.

I managed to play the mini-cassettes into my computer through the TV card
and save the recording in the .wma file format. I am loathe to snail mail
the mini-cassettes but happy to "burn" the sound file onto a CD for mailing.
If you believe that you have the expertise to improve the "hearing" quality
of my mother's words >from the computer files which I saved, would please be
good enough to contact me privately via my e-mail address above.

Many thanks in advance

Hello,

This note is in regard to the message entitled "Need help with
Jewish ancestors >from Spain and/or Portugal". I have been doing
research on my MAYO / De MAYO family who lived on the Island of
Rhodes for about 400 years until the early 1900s. Although I
have no absolute proof, I believe that the family may have been
from Navarra, Spain. Your MAY / MAI family may be spelling
variations of MAYO. One branch of my MAYO family has ancestry >from
Germany prior to the mid 1500s (surname: ALAMAN / ALMANE). This
family lived in Buda, Hungary, in the mid 1500s, and later, most
of the family had moved to Turkey. I have a MAYO Y DNA surname
project. This may be able to give you some more insights on the
origin of your MAY / MAI family. For more information, you may
contact me at the e-mail address below.

Ellen Lukas Kahn asks:

The family surnames that I do have are: =A0 LUCAS & =A0MAY or MAI.
Can anyone put me on the right path to finding out where to =A0search
for the towns that these families may have lived in Spain?
Using the search engine on http://www.sephardim.com/search.shtml on
Harry Stein's website www.sephardim.com, I found that the name LUCAS
appeared in a book on conversos on trial in Ciudad Real, Conversos on
Trial by Haim Bienart. Pere Bonnin's book Sangre Judia has a
reference to LUCA in Navarra. Sangre Judia lists MAY as having lived
in Zaragosa. MAIA, MAIO, and MAJO appear on sephardim.com in various
locations where Sephardim fled during the Inquisition, including the
Ottoman Empire and Brasil.

Since the archives in various areas in Spain are in several early
languages that are different >from modern Spanish, you might want to
contact someone who understands medieval Spanish,

Dear Ellen Kahn,

My great great grandfather, Ferdinand MAY(ER), was born in
Nierstein, Hessen, in 1812, son of Isaak Wilhelm MAYER, Mannheim
musician, and Jentle DEL BANCO, a.k.a., Julianna HAMBURG,
grandson of Abraham MAYER. Ferdinand MAYER emigrated with wife,
Kettchen MAYER nee LANDAUER and 8 children, to London, UK in 1853.
Our surname changed to MAY.

Before the Hessen the MAYER, MAYERHOFER(all spellings),
a.k.a., KREBSIG, KREPZIG, KREBSINGER, KRZEPCZYK family was in
Krakow, Galizia in 17th. century. Originally this MAY(MAYER)
family was probably Sephardic with the surname AL BAGEZI or
AL BAGESI, before the expulsion of Jews in 1492, according to
research by Eric Friedman and Pessy Hollander.

Names from the Netherlands - poss Jewish? #sephardic

Ian Herriott <ianherriott@...>

Hi List,

I'm hesitant to ask such a broad and basic question to such a large
and learned audience, but I wonder if anyone on this list would be
willing to help me ascertain whether the following people could
possibly be of Sephardic origin, or what resources I should pursue
myself.

They are both >from DNA search results, and they are somewhat closely
related, probably in the J2a1k1 haplogroup.

1) Gerard Noot, born 1380 [sic], Netherlands.
(ySearch: NX4YY)

2) Abraham DeRevere (or De Riviere) born around 1640. >from Calais,
then Zeeland. Dutch Reform.
(FTDNA Kit #1498)

Many Thanks!

Ian Herriott

MODERATOR NOTE: Discussions of DNA testing should take place on

Hi Gershon,

I'm not sure exactly what kind of info you are seeking, but in terms of the
Jewish cemeteries (through the restoration projects undertaken) of most of the
towns you listed as well as descendants, perhaps we may have some information
that may prove of interest to you, as well as some fellow descendants who may
prove additionally informative as well.

I'd be glad to share whatever information we have with anyone interested.
