indexes to recent California deaths? #general

Renee Steinig

I need to order the death certificate of a cousin who died in California in 2004.
According to the website of the California Dept. of Public Health, their average
processing time for a death record is 12 weeks. A faster alternative -- if I could
determine place of death -- would be to order the record >from the appropriate
county. Unfortunately, online California death indexes end in 1997 or 2000,
depending on the website, so they're no help. Are statewide death indexes covering
recent years available to the public at any repository in California? If so, where?

Thanks.

point is to use these sites: (http://geonames.nga.mil/ggmagaz/geonames4.asp)
and/or(http://www.fallingrain.com/world/) and include this source that may help:

Sophia WARSZAWCZYK Smolian, poet philosopher #general

Mark Strauss

Dear Jewishgen enthusiasts,
I'm trying to find publications of my great-great aunt, Sophia Warszawczyk Smolian,
originally >from Kovno and Lodz, sister of my great-grandmother Anna Warszawczk
Markel.

In her death, notice published in the NY Times on 11/23/1933, it stated the
following: "Sophia Smolian, Yiddish poet and philosopher, widow of Oscar Smolian,
New York merchant, died yesterday at the home of her son... She was born in Kovno,
Lithuania, seventy six years ago. Her writings include two volumes of poems and one
volume of philosophy."

In researching yiddish poets and philosophers, I can not find any records of her
work. Does anyone have any knowledge of her publications? I would be most
appreciative.

Mark Strauss in New York
Searching: Strauss >from Zeteny Slovakia; Berkowitz >from Slovakia; Markel (Margul)
from Lodz; and Brodie/Brody/Brauda/Broido >from Ketovsky, Vilna Gubemia, Lithuania
and Zizmai, Lithuania

Re: Suicide in San Francisco #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

It is usually unlikely that anything would have been mentioned regarding a suicide
unless it was first thought to be murder or something like. I doubt that the the
relatives would have put anything in the paper about it. However, it is possible to
look on-line for mentions of your relative in the newspaper of the day which was
the San Francisco Chronicle. Unfortunately, they have no mention of any such
person by that name.

However, there is mention in the 1918 San Francisco City Directory of a Philip and
Nina Halperin family living in San Francisco at 1152 Eddy. He was a cutter. He is
also listed in several prior directories. By 1923, there are several more Halperin
families listed: Edward and Helen, Nathan and Dora, and Samuel. In addition,
during this time, there was also a performer, Nan Halperin, who appeared in San
Francisco.

In 1918, there was a Morris Halpern, a trunk maker, living at 2553 Folsom. In 1923,
there is an Esther Halpern, widow of Morris Halpern, livng at 245 Silliman.
Perhaps this is the person you are looking for.

Marvin, you asked about the town of Antonowka. JewishGen's ShtetlSeeker
has many, many listings for towns of that name in Ukraine. Go to
http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp and type in the town name.

In addition, the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP has been translating various
documents relating to the towns of the Kremenets District. The town name
Antonovka (within 50 miles of Kremenets) shows up in 25 entries in our
Indexed Concordance of Personal Names and Town Names. You can search
through this at our Shtetlinks website,
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Kremenets/web-pages/index.html. Let
me know if you need any further information about the entries you find
there.
