Shalom,
Wolf Simmonds and Nathan Asher were the witnesses on the civil
registration
of the marriage of Catharine Asher to Solomon Shappere which took place in
July 1850 in Birmingham.I would be interested to hear if there is anyone
who
might know anything about Wolf Simmonds and or Nathan Asher.Catharine's
father was Asher Asher and it is possible that her mother was widowed and
remarried to ? Simmonds.
Also is does anyone know where I can get information about synagogue
records of Bristol and Cheltenham around 1830 - 1840.
Thank you

German newspaper notices Re: WW1 Jewish Soldiers #germany

Helen

The newspaper, Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums, at
http://www.compactmemory.de/ printed lists of Jewish soldiers, their rank
and place of enlistment who were awarded the Iron Cross, either first or
second class. The AZJ was published weekly and lists generally appeared
twice a month, sometimes more often. During the first half of 1916, the
lists generally, though not always, appeared on pages 13, 14 or 15. Trawling
through these newspapers can be tedious but I have found relatives' names.

FamilyTreeDNA 50% off testing until June 30th #galicia

Janet Akaha <Akaha@...>

FamilyTreeDNA is offering their Y-DNA 37-marker (father to father
to father) plus mtDNA (mother to mother to mother) for only $119.
To qualify for this deal you must join a group by June 30th and
pay for your kit by July 7th. FamilyTreeDNA is the same service
that is featured on the Jewishgen DNA pages.

The Y-chromosome 37 marker test can show if two individuals are
related within the 7-9 generation range. Since the Y chromosome is
passed essentially unchanged >from father to son, the donor must be
a direct line male. So they will most likely (but not necessarily)
have the same surname as their ancestor.

You need to join a group now to get the special rate and then you
can add other groups or remove yourself >from a group at any time.

Here are some of the projects that you can join:
Gesher Galicia (132 members)
Jewish Heritage Project (938 members)
Jewish Ukraine-West (334 members)
Belarus SIG (42 members)
Scandinavia SIG (1 members)
GermanJewish (34 members)

Send me a note if you want a link to any of the above websites to
check them out. Since your results are totally dependent on who
is in the database, you might want to increase the odds of finding
matches by forwarding this to others >from the same town or with
surnames in your direct line. In just the past 3 days I contacted
possible donors >from each of my lines and managed to recruit 13
people already!

I am not on expert on this and my brother just mailed his test in
a few days ago, but if you have questions I will try and answer
them as best I can.

I am wondering if, at the conference, people researching Bolechov,
Ivano-Frankivsk, Kalusz, Rohatyn, and other villages/towns in that
area are planning to meet together. If no plan has yet been made,
is there any interest?

There may be some unique research challenges, and certainly some
interesting stories.

Multi-language online translator #general

Greetings Genners!

A few weeks ago I post a link to an online Russian to English online
translator that has been a real lifesaver when it comes to visiting
websites. The link for that site is: http://www.rustran.com/

Up until last night, I was looking for an equivalent Ukrainian to English
translation program and I finally found one! The link is:
http://www.stars21.com/translator/ukrainian_to_english.html You simply "cut"
the word or words >from the website and "paste" them into the box and press
the GO button and voila! The other neat feature is the virtual keyboard. If
you have a scanned document or maybe something >from a PDF file that will not
allow you to cut & paste, you can type in the words on the keyboard and get
the same results. Another fantastic feature is that you can paste the URL of
a Ukrainian wbesite and it will translate the whole thing for you!

As you will see when you click on the link, this site has many other
languages such as Russian, Hebrew, Lithuanian, German and Polish to name
just a few.

Good luck with your research and I hope this website helps!

Jewish Institutions - Kovno Ghetto #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Following my prior post about Jewish orphanages, and the one in Kaunas in
particular, several people wrote and asked about the location, etc. A
reference to Jewish institutions as of July 10, 1941 is found in the
document: "Memorandum submitted to the Lithuanian municipality of Kovno by
the Jewish committee in Kovno, concerning the suburb of Slobodka-the planned
area for the Ghetto."

The document is mentioned in the book "Surviving the Holocaust" by Avraham
Tory, Martine Gilbert, Dina Porat and Jerzy Michalowicz, Pages 15-16.

Here is the list:

Jewish Hospital, 3 Jakstu Street
Jewish Orphanage, 15 Fire Brigade Street
Jewish Home for the Aged, 15 Puskos Street
Well-known restaurant, 10 Mapu Street
Jewish Community Centers, 14 Rotuse Square and 12 Luksio Street
Mikvah, 3 Luksio Street
Hebrew Gymnasium, 25 Nieman Embankment
Talmud Torah School, 17 Ugnagesiu Street
Jewish Clinic, 7 Pilies Street

New family website #general

Daniel Kester

I have recently posted my family data online. Take a look!

The home page is: www.thekesters.net/Genealogy
and an index of family names can be found at:
www.thekesters.net/Genealogy//Index_of_names.html

The site includes background information about the different branches
of the family, genealogical listings, photos, and maps.

All branches of the family were originally German-Jewish, >from both
western Germany and former areas of Germany that are now in Poland.
Family members now live throughout the world.

Some of the main families covered, and their "home towns" are:

BAUM (Wiesbaden)
BAER (town of Nassau, Wiesbaden)
PAPPENHEIM (Zuelz/Biala, Pitschen)
MUEHSAM (with umlaut) (Pitschen, Upper Silesia)
KLEINSTRASS (Steinheim)
HOCHHEIMER (Steinheim)
FLOERSHEIM or FLORSHEIM (Romrod, later Chicago)
BASSEVI
GERNSHEIMER (Viernheim, Rueckingen)

JACOBI (Bromberg/Bydgoszcz)
WITKOWSKI
SORAUER
BAGINSKY
SCHWEITZER
ROSENSTERN
ALEXANDER
