JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear Martha,
Do a search at www.Findmypast.com for HIMMELHOCH and variations, check out the Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960, there are a total of 37 entries, 7 of the entries are for the USA. The other entries are mainly for Cape Town, SA and Sidney, Australia. The use of the search engine is free, contact me if you need any of the transcriptions inspected as I have a subscription to this website. Best regards, Michael Hoffman, JGS of Great Britain, Regional Groups & SIG's Coordinator. Researching, HOFFMAN, OCHMAN, OFFMAN, Kiev, Belaya Tserkov, Ukraine, UK OSTROFSKY, Kiev, Belaya Tserkov, Ukraine, UK BERGER, Grabowo/Grubova, Poland, USA SCHAMROTH, SHAMROTH, SHAMROCK, Krakow, UK, USA In searching the database on "Seeking Michigan," I found a death certificate for Frieda WOFSCHLAGER who died at the end of August, 1909 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. snip...

using more data (was GOLDMAN from Bayonne)
#general
Barbara Zimmer
Sarah asked about the GOLDMAN family of Bayonne NJ >from the 1930
census for which there were three children listed in the 1930 census. There was a lot more about this family (including more children ) in earlier censuses for Bayonne and one for the family in NY in 1900. Going back to the 1920 census, we find the same family with more children. Sam is working as a blacksmith and owns the home at 383 Broadway. Living in the same building is Irving GOLDMAN family (a son of Sam and Ida) also a blacksmith. In 1910, we see that Sam's wife is listed as Sarah and Irving is listed as Ereving, but this is the same family. Sam's mother-in-law is listed as Annie LOUTHWITZ. In the 1900 census for NY, the same family is listed with the eldest son as Isidor instead of Irving; Sam's wife is Lottie. Sam's brother-in-law is living with the family and his last name is given as LEVENSOL. Irving Goldman still lived in Bayonne when he registered for the WWII "Old Men's" draft in 1942. "mock-up" (?) and actual headstone - Plashet cemetery, England
#general
Chris Gould <oldandintheway9@...>
Dear All,
I have posted on Viewmate 2 photographs of the headstone of my g-grandmother Rebecca Levy (Gould). She was buried in Plashet cemetery (London, UK) in 1901. The first photo (VM13317) (I dont know when it was taken) shows a pristine stone and lettering including Rebecca's personal details (i.e. name, age, date died, husband). The second photo (VM13318) (taken this week) shows a slightly different stone, (parentheses around last name, absence of 4 lines of general English wording included in the earlier photo) but same personal details. The first photo looks "too good to be true". Was it a practice to prepare "mock-ups" of headstones for approval prior to the actual carving? The age of the second stone is such as to suggest it may have been the original stone. If the first one had been damaged, then I think it not unreasonable to expect any replacement to have been identical. I would welcome comments. Chris GOULD/London-UK Searching: ASHENFARB (Warsaw); BERGBAUM (Lodz, Kielce); GOULD, LEVY-GOULD; KORENBLIT, KOOSEL, SALISBURY, SOLSBERG, ZALSBERG, ZELSBERG Direct url's: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=13317 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=13318

Hello,
Is there a new URL for the genealogy search tool called SurnameNavigator? Searching on Google for http://www.surnamenavigator.org/ results in 751,000 hits. So it is a little difficult to determine it's fate. Sincerely, David Rubin and Mrs. Rubin

FHL Records from Bukowina--Are the Jewish records part of church records?

Ava Cohn <avatom@...>
Has anyone searched the Family History Library records >from the
Chernivtsi State Archives that cover the areas of the Bukowina that include Storozynetz and Krasna Ilski? These metrical books are >from the orthodox church in Krasna Ilski and the roman catholic church in Storozynetz. I am wondering if Jewish records were part of the church documentation in these towns or if the rabbi in Storozynetz kept those records? Krasna Ilski was in the Storozynetz area but did not have a synagogue. The library does not indicate that there are Jewish records specifically but does say that the films include records from surrounding villages. Dear Genners:
I would like to add to Rosanne Leeson's Post about Alien Files. Transfer to NARA >from USCIS Alien Files will not be complete until "next summer." It is still possible to request a Search by USCIS for Records either online or by mail.Go to the web site. http://www.uscis.gov and look for genealogy linkCost is $20 and there is a wait for a response. They are processing requests >from early May according to the Web Site. (I made a request on June 6 and I am still waiting) Please note that this is ONLY a search of their Indices. However, the Search does include: Naturalization Certificate Files (C-files) >from September 27, 1906 to April 1, 1956 Alien Registration Forms >from August 1, 1940 to March 31, 1944 Visa files >from July 1, 1924 to March 31, 1944 Registry Files >from March 2, 1929 to March 31, 1944 Alien Files (A-files) numbered below 8 million (A8000000) and documents therein dated prior to May 1, 1951 If Records are found, there will be an additional charge for Copies. Regards, Anna Reuter Palo Alto, California ..There is an interesting article in todays NY Times, that JewishGen members might enjoy reading, regarding the opening of the "Alien Files" kept on immigrants. snip..
